Looking forward to the early access release (-_-)
HyperPortals, developed and published by Dnovel, is a minimalist and experimental indie title that blends visual novel storytelling with abstract, dimension-hopping gameplay. Rather than following the conventions of a traditional platformer or puzzle game, it takes players through an atmospheric journey where the main mechanic revolves around guiding a beam of light through surreal environments. The premise revolves around navigating across portals that connect multiple dimensions, each holding fragments of an overarching narrative about perception, reality, and transformation. The game is less concerned with linear progression or challenge and more focused on evoking curiosity and introspection through its structure. From the moment you begin, it becomes clear that HyperPortals is more of an interactive art piece than a conventional game, where the experience depends on the player’s willingness to interpret abstract ideas. The design of HyperPortals relies heavily on minimalism. The environments are stripped down to their essential forms—glowing voids, sharp geometric shapes, and cascading light effects that serve more as symbols than as literal settings. This stripped aesthetic emphasizes mood over realism, creating a feeling of isolation and mystery. Moving through these abstract spaces feels dreamlike, as though you are floating through the subconscious or passing between thoughts rather than places. The gameplay consists of choosing pathways, entering portals, and making light narrative decisions that affect the flow of the story. The simplicity of the mechanics highlights the meditative quality of the game, which seems more interested in letting the player reflect on meaning than in presenting obstacles to overcome. Each dimension acts as a vignette in a larger metaphysical tapestry, suggesting that understanding comes not from direct explanation but from personal interpretation. Narratively, HyperPortals unfolds like an experimental short story told through fragmented imagery and sparse text. There is a deliberate ambiguity in how the game presents its world; players are invited to piece together the narrative through suggestion rather than exposition. This approach can be fascinating for those who appreciate games that challenge conventional storytelling, but it can also feel frustrating for anyone looking for a cohesive or emotionally grounded plot. The sense of disconnection is part of its identity—it mirrors the idea of drifting through dimensions without full comprehension, of being a traveler in spaces that exist beyond logic. The writing, though minimal, is poetic in tone and complements the abstract nature of the visuals. It’s clear that Dnovel intended for HyperPortals to be a sensory and reflective experience rather than a straightforward narrative. In terms of pacing and mechanics, HyperPortals is extremely minimalistic. There are no enemies to defeat, no resources to gather, and no traditional puzzles to solve. Instead, progress is achieved through exploration and decision-making, as you choose between different portals and interpret the symbolic significance of each path. The controls are intuitive and accessible, allowing the player to focus on the atmosphere rather than skill-based challenges. The slow rhythm can either be calming or monotonous depending on one’s expectations. For players who appreciate games that resemble interactive meditation—where sound, color, and motion work together to form an ambient experience—this pace is fitting. However, for those who expect dynamic progression or tangible goals, it may feel underwhelming. The simplicity serves the tone of the game but limits its appeal to a very specific audience. Visually and sonically, the game creates an ethereal atmosphere through its use of color gradients, light effects, and a subdued soundtrack. The music is gentle and otherworldly, enhancing the sensation of traveling through intangible realms. Sound design is used sparingly, emphasizing moments of stillness as much as motion. This helps build a contemplative mood that aligns with the game’s metaphysical themes. The abstract aesthetic may remind players of older minimalist experiments like Rez or more narrative-driven works such as The Plan or Journey, though on a much smaller and more personal scale. It is the kind of design that values emotion and idea over spectacle, relying on subtle audiovisual cues to maintain immersion. HyperPortals is clearly a niche project aimed at those who appreciate experimental art games and are willing to embrace ambiguity. It’s short, inexpensive, and conceptually ambitious within its limited scope. The experience feels like stepping into an interactive poem—intangible, fleeting, and open to interpretation. Players looking for a deep narrative, complex gameplay, or high production values will likely find it too sparse, but for those drawn to reflective digital art, it can be a fascinating detour from mainstream gaming. The game’s strength lies in its atmosphere and willingness to explore unconventional storytelling, and while it may not linger long in terms of length, it leaves a subtle emotional impression. HyperPortals ultimately stands as a quiet experiment in interactive abstraction, offering a brief but intriguing glimpse into the possibilities of minimalist digital expression. Rating: 6/10
