It's quite short and I'm not a huge fan of the game design, which mostly involves short dialogue with NPCs, although they are often funny. The primary appeal of the game is the non-euclidean space and world and that is such a unique and well crafted angle that I easily recommend it to anyone mathematically inclined. It's truly a unique game.
I had fun! Play it if you want to: - learn what hyperbolic and spherical space feels like, - lose track of where everything around you is, - (Optional) go out of your way to read a bunch of random NPC dialogue just for fun (and sometimes puns) I think it's best feature is for sure the mind-bending geometry of the world - it's somehow a lot of fun to have your sense of what's physically real undermined just a little bit. I love the moments when I turn 360 degrees and then have to awkwardly realise I need to turn another 90 degrees to end up where I started. I think it was definitely much more fun because I watched the creator's devlog on YT before playing. 100% would recommend watching the devlog first - both to see if the idea of hyperbolic space is interesting to you, and to give you the context to be amazed by the geometry of the game when you play it. I also think it's more fun if you're patient and a bit of a collectaholic. Look, I don't like to miss stuff, so I often resort to basically doing a grid pattern search on a game to find all the dialogue and collectibles before I do any plot progression. What's really weird about trying to do that in this game is it's actually PHYSICALLY DIFFICULT to explore every last corner of the world. Like, every corner has 3 sub-corners you need to explore so it takes way longer, and if you try to cut across and skip a section you already explored, you might misunderstand space itself and leave a section unexplored. So you've gotta be patient, but I enjoyed that the gamespace itself was hostile towards my playstyle - it didn't made doing a grid pattern search more entertaining (it's a bit boring in any game), but because it felt like I was fighting the game to do it, I got a sense of achievement from it. You've also gotta be patient to enjoy the dialogue, because there's a lot of it. It wasn't thrilling reading small talk for 15-20 minutes while I gradually completed my grid search, but I honestly enjoyed it. Also for the collectaholics, there are hints for where to find things if you miss them, which is great because a grid search would've been less fun the 2nd time. Just a fascinating experience geometrically, wrapped in a reasonably slow-paced game that gives you a bunch of minigames/puzzles as opportunities to see how weird and fascinating living in hyperbolic/spherical space can be. 11.5hrs for me to 100% it (minus VR achievement), and I play slowly.
this game is very fun. i thought the story kinda felt pointless at the end though (youll know what i mean once you play the game). the game is really trippy and somewhat educational and really allows you to visualize a hyperbolic space. it also includes spherical spaces which are really cool.
Cool for those interested in non-Euclidean geometry and how it works, I love how decently accurate the rendering is. Main quests are simple but give you a good idea of how each world works. I recommend taking breaks though as the game warns, you mayy get a migraine if you play for too long!

gimmick doesn't really work well in vr honestly, just makes the world feel super flat
Have you ever seen the front and the back of a barn at the same time? Would you like to?
As someone fascinated by mathematics, Hyperbolica is amazing, allowing you to experience hyperbolic and spherical geometries in a (somewhat) intuitive way. That being said, it does feel more like a tech demo to explore said geometries. Also, even though I have pretty good VR legs, the VR mode absolutely killed me. If walking around in unfamiliar geometries sounds interesting, you'll love this game.
100% Hyperbolica on 8/27/2022. Was a fun little mind bending game. Only had trouble with 1 achievement which was the VR achievement because it was bugged... took months to unlock. Only unlocked it because someone else figured out why it wasn't running in VR properly.
