READ REVIEWS BEFORE BUYING! I went into this game thinking it was a cool little loot grabber kinda game. Instead I was greeted with multiple death screens. LOL anyway. This game is a real challenge to those that enjoy a good roguelike experience. Dying after getting your most optimal upgrades feels like a tremendous loss. But when you see them again on your second run, youre glad to see it. You will die a lot, but through each run youll be forced to utilize every mechanic down to the parrying. My only gripes about this game is the lack of "Upgrades". Yes there are upgrades in the game but it doesnt really feel like a huge difference in power. Leveling up your weapons dont feel like youre doing much to them, but the rerolling of the elements for your weapon have been the most useful when looking for an element suited for your playstyle. (I use bleed heh) Also the enemies hit REALLY hard and you can die due to your attack animation taking too long to play out or end. Speaking of the combat, (im playing on mouse and keyboard) The attacking feels really wonky, not as fluid as I'd hope it'd be. Most times your hits are missing by a hair or youre facing behind you rather than the enemy in front of you. Ofcourse it would be cool if we saw more utilities and upgrades (and weapons) Another thing that I would love to see is some character customization!! The characters are already set in stone, but maybe some cool cosmetic changes like the color palette or hairstyles, clothing, etc. I just completed what the game had to offer, and i'd say the progression gets easier as you learn what youre doing. Make sure to read the tutorials and tips in game.

So I bought this when it first released on Early Access but didn't try it out until the first big patch due to reviews. So here's my honest feedback from my play through with a friend. We played the HLB, Necropolis, and Risk of Rain 2 together. Game in a somewhat similar vein. Overall we thought it was too easy, which is surprising because based on initial reviews it seemed people were having alot of difficulties. Maybe the dash is too forgiving. Whenever a bad guy looks like hes doing something you can just double dash away and there really aren't any consequences. We got rekt our first play through as we learned the game but, after the first wipe we "beat it". I think most the time the thing that would hurt us is the guys that blow up after they die, just because of complacency . I thought the world exploration was kind of boring. It feels too flat and easily accessible by hover board. It feels just too wide open. I don't really like the character progression. Alot of the upgrades and stuff feel like very nuanced and maybe don't even apply to your play style. I don't think it really mattered because it was too easy. I never felt like I got 2 things that worked really well together and made some kind of build or that there was much differentiation. I felt like i got the cube amp and that was the best amp so now there is no point of even caring about different amps. Now this may be because the more recent pivot to be more traditional rogue like. I never got the feeling of like. JUST ONE MORE RUN! From this game. When me and my friend beat it we were like... ok do you want to do it again and try out different stuff. The answer was, not really. I feel like I've seen it all. I didn't feel like the bad guy timer was getting increasingly difficult in a way that challenged me. I didn't feel like there was pressure to optimize my run better. I didn't feel like I was constantly having to make tough rogue like decisions based on how my run was going, of where to go or what risks to take, or what items to choose. I do like the vibe of the game and alot of the stuff its got going on. But it doesn't seem like it knows what it wants to be yet and the devs are struggling to make it work. I hope they do because i like Heart Machine.
devs have completely abandoned the game in a barely playable state with awful optimisation. if you're looking for a real successor to hyper light drifter, this isnt it. i gave the game some slack for being in early access but now that it's been abandoned and left to die i can't in good conscience recommend this game to anyone. hopefully heart machine redeems themselves and their next game ends up better because i truly believe that after they've made the absolute gem that is hyper light drifter, they have the skills to make a game as good as it.
little disclaimer i have not played hyper light drifter yet so i have no frame of reference :\ I really like the game so far its like if risk of rain 2 was larger and more drawn out runs are longer and the world is bigger if your into that sorta thing. The combat is pretty fun and its really satisfying to hit parries. the character design is really cool and stylish (goro is my favorite).HOWEVER I will say this I think you should either wait for a sale(as i did) if your skeptical or until they add an actual ending to the game because in its current state this game does not have a final boss or an ending (you are wisped back to the settlement and given a boss shard). 1 more thing this game stutters ALOT ive tried everything turning the graphics down playing in windowed checking the forum etc, and this is on pretty decent hardware (NVIDIA Geforce rtx 2070 super). In short whats there is good but not to sound like a hater or anything i personally dont think its worth 30$ at the moment (would go for at 20$) I really look forward to what heart machine has in store for this game and im sure theyll make a lot of progress on this game very soon. tldr pros: fun gameplay loop fun combat good character design fun bosses fun progression system cons Stuttery Currently Lacks Major content like a final boss or proper ending Im very hopeful for this game and i trust that its in good hand so if your reading this review at a later date when they have added the ending /final boss then just discard this review because who cares have a good day UPDATE : disregard all of this everyone’s been laid off don’t buy this it will never be finished
Is Hyper Light Breaker a good game? I think it’s hard to give a definitive answer. In my opinion, HLB’s design philosophy is quite ahead of time — Heart Machine seems to be crafting a very novel gameplay. However, it looks like they haven’t achieved what they set out to do yet. I believe they need to further expand the game’s content, because only with enough depth can the open-world + roguelike mechanics truly shine. I’m not sure whether the upcoming Elden Ring Nightreign will turn out to be what HLB was originally aiming for, but as an Early Access title, Hyper Light Breaker still has the opportunity to improve — and maybe even learn from Nightreign’s strengths. I really hope future updates will shape the game into the kind of experience every fan of the Hyper Light series is hoping for.
