Hua Mulan: A Chinese Learning Adventure

In theory this game is awesome. The concept and integration of learning is quite different from other games. But it goes at an unfortunately slow pace. The graphics need a lot of work as they are so janky and all the voice seems to be done by AI. this takes the personality and immersive feeling out of the game. I wanted to like this game so badly as I had it in my wish list for months but I was just left disappointed. Maybe I will return once they fully launch and see if the devs update the game.

Janky but fun. Excited to see the updates, cause as it currently stands it's < 1 hr of gameplay and not extremely helpful for anyone at HSK1+. For those beginning, welcome and enjoy this silly little game.

This is such a brilliant idea, and I really wanted to give it a good review, but at the moment it is not worth £6.never mind £16. The graphics have serious faults (the ground is invisible in the first mission) and there needs to be either real updates of for this not to be sold at this price. Which is a shame because, as I said, it is a brilliant idea. At the moment I cannot recommend it alas, because it is quite badly broken. If the graphics problems can be sorted though I'd be happy to recommend it.

don't work at all !? Is Steam selling us dead games?

i read the descirption so knew it was short and that new chapters are coming. i would love to learn this way by playing a game. i can't wait to see what happens when i learn more then just greetings. Will update as new chapters come out

As it stands I do not recommend. It has some neat concepts but is so buggy and short on content that it is not at all ready for mainstream consumption. One of the biggest frustrations is the performance is absolutely terrible even on my relatively modern hardware and the graphical settings on lowest. It frequently locks up and makes the already slow pace of the game even slower while you are waiting for it to become responsive again. In fact I am writing this review while waiting for it to come back to life. Other things that need major improvement are the way that the english translation is represented. It doesn't show the English translation instead you have a voice tell you after the dialog a vague translation of what they said. This makes it extremely useless for actually learning the language and instead you repeat 你好 and 谢谢 ad nauseum throughout the entire chapter.

I wanted to like this game, but it didn't take long to see that it wasn't what I was looking for. The fact they use TTS for the voices means you aren't hearing anything that seems like normal speech. The stability isn't great, and crashes the steam deck on startup. The controls are janky, and difficult to use. I could see this being great, but it needs more time in the oven and some native speaker voice work.

So I like this game with a HUGE caveat - it's not ready yet. I like where it's going, but I don't think it's fair to give it a thumbs down with it in early access. The game itself is definitely headed in the right direction and despite its glitches, it has potential to be really good as a supplementary learning tool for new learners to Chinese. the concept is awesome. but it needs work. graphics are meh. the dialog is ridged and feels like AI. the mic response could be better. the controls could be smother. but i do like the concept of educational immersion gaming to learn a new language. but at this time cant recommend it until it is a better product.

Clunky Controls: Navigation and interaction can be frustrating due to awkward controls. Chasing moving NPCs becomes needlessly challenging, detracting from the gameplay. Subpar English Voice Acting: The English voice acting is stiff and robotic, lacking the natural flow needed to make interactions feel real. This contrasts sharply with the much better-executed Chinese voice overs. Large Game Size: The disproportionately large file size suggests inefficiencies in how the game is built, which might lead to unnecessary strain on your system, especially evident in slower performance on less capable hardware. In its current early access state, "Hua Mulan: A Chinese Learning Adventure" is a mixed bag. The innovative approach to learning Mandarin through an interactive and historically rich narrative is compelling. However, significant improvements in graphics, control mechanics, and English voice acting are needed to fully realize its potential. It's a game with promise, particularly for those passionate about learning Mandarin and enjoying a story-driven experience.
