I was going to give it a positive review even though it's incomplete and I knew there would be bugs. However, I can't even get past the second task because no matter where I am in the village left-clicking makes me talk to the lady who I'm doing the task for. So I am completely stuck and can't get further than the first few minutes of the game. Tremendously disappointing after waiting so long to give this thing a try. I really hope it doesn't take them a year to fix this because I was enjoying it up until that point. Edit: They fixed the issue!
So far I'm really liking the game. The lessons are short but concise. The story told keeps you entertained, even if one or two logical errors are noticeable. I'm definitely excited to see how the story and my learning progress continue. Negatives: - When it comes to what struck me negatively, the elephant in the room is probably the graphics. It's not contemporary and there were moments where I even had to laugh because of the graphics. I only mention it for the sake of completeness. I don't think anyone plays or judges the game because of it. - I also noticed negatively that you can only learn the vocabulary of the current lesson, but in the learning units that the character uses to prepare for his mission, the vocabulary of the previously learned lessons cannot be selected. - During the missions I had the problem with two or three words that I couldn't understand how I should vary the pitch. It always showed up to me as incorrect in pronunciation and I didn't know why. If a player is shown that they are doing something wrong but is not given an explanation of what or why, it can frustrate the player. Positive: - The fact that the vocabulary to be learned can not only be read but also heard is essential in a tonal language like Mandarin Chinese. The fact that you also have the opportunity to speak the vocabulary yourself is very good. - I was thrilled when I read that you also plan to incorporate writing the characters into the learning process. Hopefully it will be in a step-by-step (or stroke-by-stroke) guide. Suggestions: - Regarding pronunciation, it would be beneficial, especially at the beginning of the game, to point out how the pitch of the syllables varies. This topic is very confusing, especially for people who have had little or no contact with the Chinese language. - The font, both the Latin letters and the Chinese characters, could be slightly larger. Perhaps a font size control in the menu would also be beneficial for people who have difficulty with fonts that are too small for them. Hopefully they will incorporate this point into learning to write the characters. - How about an updated index of the vocabulary and phrases you have already learned? This would certainly make the learning process easier for the player. - Perhaps the players would benefit if the pronunciation to be learned, or the variance of the pitch, could also be displayed graphically. Those were the most important points for me at the moment.
