It's dope and its been an honour to work on the music alongside the other fantastic and skilled producers, and also alongside Melonade / EM Games who's done a wicked job bringing this vision to life. Go play this if you're a fan of old skool skating games or trick arena games like Big Air Freestyle, Tony Hawk or Trickstyle!!!
As a big fan of early 00s SEGA games, this fits right in. The overall aesthetic, the menus, the art style are all reminiscent of the era. Gameplay is smooth and has responsive particles and retro sounds to keep you on the combo. Levels are full of stuff to do and make you want to try again and again to unlock new levels and skins. The standout part of this game though is the soundtrack. I found myself just idly hovering around just jamming out to the music. Unlocking new levels unlocks new music and is worth it just for that reason alone!
Hoversteppers delivers a fun freestyle hoverboard experience: you zoom through five distinct stages, master flips and spins, and race against the clock while unlocking cool boards and cosmetics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_BRBjeDQ5g
I used to Skateboard and Back to the Future 2 is one of my all time favourite films....So this game and I should be made for each-other...But we didn't get that spark! I don't know why...It isn't a bad game at all (I did struggle with the controls) GAMEPLAY REVIEW: https://youtu.be/5h5-GkN9aJE
Key GAMEPLAY Elements
🔵 Start with just 2 characters and Boards and Unlock more with tricks 🔵 There are numerous challenges around to progress and unlock more stuff 🔵 Excellent soundtrack if you like to ...Chill... 🔵 Hoverboards ARE Still Cool...Rigtht? Game takes me back to the jetset radio days or tony hawk days where we played for fun and enjoyed the soundtrack. This game is for those who just want to enjoy the ride, do some tricks and get lost to the beats.
There's no dedicated jump button, & the turning circle on the boards isn't sharp enough to feel responsive or very good. There's only 3 playable characters, & a small handful of levels included; none of which particularly feel inspired, or flow well. It just gets repetitive fast; & feels like a low effort, half-baked game jam demo, rather than a real game. Why does the game constantly try to phone home & make an internet connection as well? There's no leaderboards or multiplayer whatsoever.... It compares very unfavourably to other similar games like Wave Break. I mean, Sure, Wave Break doesn't have hoverboards, but that novelty wears off fast, anyway, & causes other imprecise control issues (like missing grinds on rails as the hoverboard bobs up & down floating, resulting in it snagging on environmental scenery like ramps, etc). Other comparable products on Steam like Wave Break ; actually feel like proper full games with tons of content that are worth the asking price, so I'm not sure I can even humour hoversteppers at a really low price, because I still don't feel it's worth it (even when it's half the price), because you get less than a 1/5 of the content! Moral of the story; just spend the extra money & get a good game instead. Because this isn't worth the time or money.
5/10 would grab on deep sale, not much here + works on windows 7 + music - minimalist environment
I don't know... I think I'd rather play Tony Hawk instead. The movements feels way too floaty for me. It doesn't feel like I have as much control here.
going in, I was expecting this to be closer to Jet Set Radio and Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, cuz it just has that style and vibe to it, y'know? (I generally don't look TOO into games because I enjoy the element of surprise.) this is actually, obviously much more in the vein of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. which is very welcome considering that there aren't really any indie spiritual successors to that series that I have dug. I'm absolutely god awful at it, but it still feels really satisfying, the music's lovely, the visuals are neat, and I can't think of anything else contemporaneous that I'd recommend. SkateBIRD felt janky to me, Rollerdrome mixes in third-person shooting so it's not a 1:1 comparison (though it is awesome, RIP Roll7), and I am not playing a new Activision Blizzard release like the recent Pro Skater 1+2 remakes. (plus those are all invariably much pricier than Hoversteppers.)
