I got it on sale for ridiculously cheap. I think even for the full price which is currently 10 bucks its worth it for an escape for an afternoon. I waited forever because of all the negative reviews. I would say its a good game provided you go into it with reasonable expectations. Visually it is great along with the atmosphere. Gameplay is very simple. You walk around a shore and collect objects that unlock new experiences. That is about it. Combat is boarderline not there. If you go in expecting to see some cool lovecraftian things for pretty cheap and are patient with the understanding you are getting into a brief exploration game, it will be a good time. If you go in expecting any sort of AA, or AAA gameplay mechanics and a long story, you're gonna leave a real negative review.
I don't understand what people are complaining about so much? It turns out that the main problem is the controller where the grip also takes the bag. This is easily solved, in half a minute, in the steamvr controller setting. I don't really notice anything else. The game runs just fine. And don't give up on it. The atmosphere is exceptional, especially in VR. Work off art.
The game looks beautiful in VR, and manages to run stable (but with notably inconsistent frame timings) on an rtx 4080 on the second-highest quality preset. But that's unfortunately the only semi-positive thing that can be said about this game. Make no mistake, this is not a VR game. It's a 2D game that had a VR camera and some barebones VR interaction slapped on. The game fights you at every step - quite literally. Just walking in a straight line can be challenging since the collision meshes of game objects have only a passing relationship with the visible models, which also includes the floor itself. This makes some locations, like the stairs in the lighthouse, literally impossible to traverse with smooth locomotion, you need to switch to teleportation for it. Turning doesn't actually turn you, it physically displaces you in a circle around an imaginary point in front of you - imagine a planet orbiting a star, where you are the planet. I also had to remap some buttons on the index controllers via the steam vr controller config because it was, while not impossible, just not feasible to use the default mapping. This might be hardware specific, though, so your mileage may vary. It is honestly sad. This is an absolutely stunning game, especially in VR, but it's nigh unplayable in its current state. I honestly believe that this is a developer that tried to give their users what they wanted when they asked for a VR version, but without the ability to execute. But at the same time it's borderline deceptive and malicious to charge money for a product in this state.
This game is one of the best atmospheric experiences in VR, although it is lacking some polish even over its design elements in a few places. The theme music and the voiceover style perfectly complete the mood within a realisticly isolated atmosphere. The surrealist sections are a bit off compared to the general realistic look of the island, but they're more than enough to depict the lovecraftian style. I believe this game could be one of the strongest candidates to represent how realistic immersive storytelling can be elevated to the highest level in VR. The big downside is the terrible implementation of some of the VR game mechanics and puzzle related mechanics. The nonVR version doesn't have these drawbacks. By the way, the nonVR version is a seperate game, having many common elements shared. So, devs should definitely polish the VR version. I saw they added some patches after the first release, like fixing the 3d stereoscopic view of the sea visual is one of the highlights. So, I have some hopes that they can fix issues especially when VR gains more attention. Secondly, I don't think there is any need to include combat parts in the VR version of the game, even though I didn't find it boring. It does make sense for the nonVR version but here in VR, the real thing is the atmosphere perfectly made. The horror and tension is beautifully there already in moderation. Running away from the big creatures could have just been very enough, rather than having a pretty simple combat which downgrades the quality. So focusing on polishing vr game mechanics over combat could have made more sense for such a great atmospheric composition. I hope they won't abandon this game. Vr games will be getting more reputation eventually, because nothing is more immersive than this medium. I have no doubt that this game will have its deserving place, but they need to work on it!
TL;DR - this is the first game in fifteen years of using Steam for which I have requested a refund. The controls make this game at best difficult to play, and at worst impossible. The lack of any real tutorial for the controls is part of the problem, though trial and error can help get past some of this (since when is "grip" the "use" control?). There is no feedback when you successfully interact with a menu item, which makes changing settings an exercise in frustration. Using an Oculus Rift with its touch controllers, I was unable to figure out a way to look in the journal. The tutorial panel indicates "right trigger + left/right" to move through pages, but either this can't be used to open the journal, or it simply doesn't work. Holding the trigger and moving either stick left or right simply moves the character. Gesturing left or right doesn't do anything. Trying to grip the journal with the left hand and physically open it doesn't do anything. Perhaps it isn't possible to open the journal until something is in it? If so, it would be helpful if the game gave any indication that this was the case. Upon retrieving a message from a bottle, I attempted to put that in the journal, to no effect. Perhaps it can't go in the journal. I am not usually affected by motion sickness in VR games, but smooth movement in this title does seem to make me queasy. That is likely not the developers' fault - and to their credit, they included a teleport option. Except, again, there is no indication of how to use it provided in the game. Experimentation revealed you need left stick click and hold, then aim for your destination. Stick click is a cumbersome control at best, and its use here is questionable. Interacting with items is abnormally challenging - while most games give you some range from your avatar's hands, the Shore seems to require the hand to fully reach the object. Not insurmountable, but annoying. None of this seems to be insoluble, but if/unless it's changed, the game is to be avoided.
I got it on very steep promo, minding the negative reviews. But I enjoyed the experience quite very much, here are my bullet points: - nice walking simulator, with some cryptics text and artifacts collecting - not much of a puzzles, rather finding artifact, but still was ok for me. - quite good gfx, even with some small visual glitches like double edges of rocks or spear visible on the water or glass in the lighthouse, nothing big for me - very dense athmosphere, accented by music and creepy sounds. I had goosebumps a lot. - very nice Lovecraftian artifacts/creatures (animations could be better) - sure it is a quite buggy, especially with periodic stutter attack each few minutes (I wait it out, looking at the ground and fpsVR) or double rocks edges or spear visible on the water or the glass in the lighthouse, but in my case even if annoying I could manage. - controls are a bit special, not easy to figure it out fastly, but controller grab is your only friend (put items over left arm to the backpack, pages to the right belt area) So in conclusion I would say that's a pitty the devs did not hire any pro porting dev to do the job (such as Andre Elijah Immersive) or any experienced modder for help with good VR practices. Your experience may vary, but for me it was unexpectedly nice experience. ...6/10 as of now, good for Lovecraft fans!
