Fabulous game. I like the inspiration a lot and I feel a lot of the developers personality in the gameplay and direction. I think the bosses are very creative and the world is nice and big helping to make the player feel extra small. Can't wait to see what else soomr makes in the future <3
This game is great if you like Shadow of the Colossus, Evangelion, and the noise the microwave makes while you reheat leftovers from a frozen dinner that you made in the same microwave the day before. 14/15 because i do not like cubes.
Nah. Neat visual presentation and concept, but the aiming/shooting is a touch too jank and unsatisfying. The buildings used make it seem more like the hovercraft is tiny than the structures being massive.
So I finally got my hands on a Playstation and played Shadow of the Colossus for the first time. Obliviously I yearned for more of it as it was such a great game (and me being a lover of boss rushes). Unfortunately for me there wasn't many games like it... To my surprise Hovercrafts x Nihilism debuted just a few days later :) Going with the vibes, it's SotC mixed with Ergo Proxy -especially the hover sail- and it's done well. I enjoyed the atmosphere while looking for the bosses. Both the "tracker" and boost are improved. And the most importantly, the bosses are good. Earlier ones are understandably easy but oh boy they pick up the pace after a while. Some of them even got me at the edge of my seat and clenching my teeth with frequent close calls. I really had fun fighting them and now I'm yearning for more, again. This game is quite interesting. On the one hand it very clearly draws inspiration from shadow of the colossus with its boss rush structure and world design, as well as evangelion's story, themes, and monster designs. And while there are a lot of things it borrows from those 2 it doesnt really improve on them. I do prefer the traversal in this to shadow of the colossus but the combat (mostly due to everything killing you in one shot) feels almost luck based rather than making you think and strategise like sotc does. And (spoiler warning)
after your friend dies, which is far too early if you ask me, the story kind of falls apart, since you lack the context and motivation for your character.
Overall there are parts of this I really liked, but also a lot that frustrated me. I would recommend it though, because even with the frustrating parts, it clearly has a lot of passion behind it and is pretty fun. overall I'd give it a 6.5/10
This could be an incredible hidden gem with a few small changes to the controls. The biggest issue is that steering is digital, despite using an analog stick. Even a slight nudge on the left stick will rapidly increase your turning speed from 0% to 100% at a fixed rate. You need to rapidly tap the stick to keep the ship from oversteering and sending you into a tailspin. Steering also moves the camera, meaning you have to constantly re-adjust your aim while moving around. I also dislike the boost mechanic, which forces you to stare at the bottom of the screen and ignore the interesting scenery.
Good stuff, Would like to see more from the author. Had fun, and will probably replay in a year or two. Vibes above all with some interesting boss segments that were actually rather hair-raising. Hope to see more, indeed.
Cool Game, cool Style, nice mechanics, music on point ( a bit more vairity would be good ), its an vibe for its own!!!
Diving into Hovercrafts x Nihilism was a fun experience. The story itself is enjoyable, and the boss fights are there. Some fights can be cheesed easily, and most of them are pretty balanced or easy i think. Going to boss arenas can get boring easily since you cant really take a good look at the scenery or breathe in the atmosphere like you can do in Shadow of the Colossus, but the main loops of both games are pretty much similar. I really wish the developer would've added more to the environment and polished the overall looks/vibes of the game to perfection, but it is what it is. If it didn't feel like doing chores after some while, the game would've been a solid 8-8.5/10; but for now i think my score is 7.3-7.5/10. Also props to the developer for quick hotfixes.
Great game, that is inspired by Shadows of the Colossus as advertised. Story is vague, you're looking for a power on a war torn planet. You explore the planet in a hovercraft blasting bullets (that also acts as a compass pointing towards the nearest power supply) until you find and destroy all 15 sources of power. Meanwhile after every power source is defeated you get to have a nice little nihilistic spiral into a healthy outlook on life. Good fun.
