I was a huge fan of the original Last Dream, so it pains me to write a negative review. It pained me a lot more to try playing through this hot mess, though. This is a pseudo-sequel to another game, both being Final Fantasy type RPGs. In this game, you try to punch enemies to death before they paralyze, burn, silence, lacerate, confuse, zombify, poison, and blind you all in one round. I'm only exaggerating a little bit, as almost every random encounter configuration can and will inflict at least two kinds of status ailments on your party. The point where I knew for sure I was playing the wrong game was when I encountered an enemy which could blind my entire party simultaneously, or inflict sleep AND poison on my entire party simultaneously, or reduce one character's hp to 1, or straight up instakill any one of my party members. Oh, and these gentlemen come in groups of SIX. For mega lulz, this is about two hours into the game. You have to wonder what is going through the heads of devs when they make crap like this, though the most likely answer is "nothing". You can import your party from the previous game too, if you want things to get as badly unbalanced in the opposite direction. Import an old party and you'll instakill anything. Except your mages! This doesn't show too much in the prequel, but as you get to higher and higher levels the way the game calculated magic attack vs. magic defense means almost all of your characters are going to be doing zero damage. It is pretty bad with your warriors (even the extremely offense-focused monk), but your wizards are going to be flailing uselessly while you rely on weird strategies like bombs and instant kill attacks. You're able to do the whole "poison, stun, paralyze, confuse, blind, silence everybody at once" thing too. If used well this can give you a fighting chance, though this makes the whole thing a huge luck-based game since there are very few things you can do to resist status effects. Long story short, the balance of this game is complete junk and you have to play in very specific, counterintuitive, and most importantly unfun ways. Avoid this nonsense.
After playing two hours of this game, I can safety say I won't be continuing. As a huge fan of JRPGs, and after reading all the reviews for this one, it was surprising when, as the minutes kept going, the less enjoyment I was having with this game. The randomly OP enemies and casting of negative status effects on my parts within 40 steps outside of the first town was a downer. In addition, there was no 'journal' of any kind, so after starting on Day 1 and picking it up again on Day 3, I had half-forgotten what I was to do. Things just didn't *feel* right in this game. The UI, the characters, the fonts for the character displays during battle...things just felt off. I tip my hat to the developers, because huge JRPGs is something I'm always going to be in favor of, but after two hours, I had no enjoyment whatsoever with my gameplay. Nothing felt intuitive or fun to me, unfortunately.
This is a huge step away from the first Last Dream, in a bad way. It seems like the artist they had to design monsters has left and they replaced them with a 7th grader who liked to doodle fantasy stuff. Its really bad. I am not a professional artist by any means but I legit have done much better fantasy art than most of the monsters you encounter. Aside from bad artwork, the story is atrocious, seemingly pandering to diversity, and the story seems super thin and uninspired. Every other NPC you talk to has some kind of message about how all of the races are equal and should work together. Not joking, its more than half of them that say something like this. Its just like what the hell, we get it. This game has nowhere near the character as the original. Again, character attribute customization is nice, but ability selection is limited. Continuing from a previous save of Last Dream keeping equipment is not advised, as you will be broken overpowered and the game will be absolutely trivial. For example, you get to the town with an arena pretty early on in this game, and I was able to just stomp every aspect of the arena with 2 characters not even breaking a sweat or having to use any items. Also, mages are weak, the black mage is essentially useless. I will continue to play with hopes that the story shifts and gets better. I put over 60 hours in Last Dream, which I rate a solid 9/10, but so far World Unknown is a 3/10 at best.
RPG Maker strikes again! This is another low effort retro-pixel JRPG ripoff spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." This isn't even a good RPG Maker game. It is one of the better ones in a sea of medicority, which is a lot like being one of the taller midgets, but not the tallest midget. There's a few flaws on top of the terrible default position that RPG maker puts the game in. Gamers who want a good retro gaming experience would be better off playing the original Final Fantasy games or one of the better RPG Maker games.
I felt a bit more divided about this game than Last Dream, but overall I still found it a fun time. Your group of heroes can be imported, or you can start over with a new party at the minimum level. One important thing to note is that you aren't playing from level 1, it's whatever level your party finished at previously or the default for a brand new group. Most of the things I enjoyed about the first game, such as music/music variety, gameplay, and engagement, are still here. A few new experiments were done in this one for certain parts of the game, and while some were fun, I also grew frustrated with others. It's hard to say without spoilers, but just remember that the developers have a walkthrough on their website for this game as well as the first one, and honestly I found myself relying heavily on it. Overall, I would recommend this game if you are very familiar with its predecessor Last Dream. You need to be able to effectively use the heroes in your party to do well in this game, and that is something you have a better chance of accomplishing if you've finished out the first game.
挺棒的一款jrpg,看的出制作组的用心,有很丰富的内容值得探索。但是没有中文,玩不动啊。
Oh boy, more Last Dream. So if you played the last game- It's very much more of the same, in a good way. They've clearly learned as they work on the series, and a lot of the rougher edges of the design have been improved this go-around. Levels and Dungeons seem to be better-designed this time, and they've clearly gotten their hands on a much wider array of tilesets and other assets, so the whole game feels very distinct both in telling regions apart from eachother, and like you'll never look at a screen and mistake it for something you saw in the first game. Oh, and the music is still sweet. If you've never played the original- you can still play this game no problem, but you gotta get a sense of what you're trying to get into: This is a Zoning Out Game. This is a game where you've got some time to kill, and you just chill out and go for awhile. It's never going to grab you by the heart or get your adrenaline pumping, but if you have the right itch for it to scratch, you'll have a great time. I love these games, even as I understand that not everyone wants a zoning out game. If you do, give one of these ones a shot. If not, they're probably not for you, and that's fine.
If you liked Last Dream, this is more of the same. It has the same feel as an Epic-level D&D campaign - you're more powerful than you get to be in most RPGs from the get-go, but your enemies are a good bit tougher too. The story can be tough to follow, but if you stick with it it can be a very rewarding experience. It takes place in a different setting than the first, so you don't have to worry too much about continuity. That being said, I do not recommend this as your first Last Dream experience. Play the first game first and then work your way over to this. I found it to be a much more rewarding experience.
Starting with lvl 60+ party with a set of like 20-30 skills each is no fun. Just let me start at lvl 1 and slowly get to the point where I have 20 skills which I mastered over the course of the game. It put me off from the beginning, so perhaps I missed something great or maybe we actually do start at lvl 1 after the "intro" of some sorts...I doubt it tho.
I don't understand all the positive reviews. An rpg maker game really really had to stand out in todays market to me. This doesn't do that at all
