Horizon's Gate

A very fun tactical RPG with character progression reminiscent of Final Fantasy Tactics and CRPG-esque world exploration. If you are (as I am) always looking for more FFT-like games to play, this one's a must! The base game is a little light on things to do -- you can finish the game pretty quickly -- but this game has great mod support and there are a ton of mods that add extra dungeons and challenges that can significantly extend your playtime. This is a recommendation even unmodded, but with mods it's fabulous.

Fun game, lots of little side quests, there are also many quest, story and locations mods available as well. The main story is a bit short and I'm a bit disappointed you don't get to regain your ability to side with your home country of Domino especially because it sounds as if the Admiral was the only one really trying to kill you. It was fun, and short and didn't overstay it's welcome as even though I put 70ish hours into it it was mostly because I liked doing trading to make money and exploring the different ports. I never really developed my own port so I don't know how that all works but it seems like this game has many systems in it that could give you many more hours of content if you wanted to claim everything for your faction of choice.

Great game. Really enjoy it. The class system is great.

Yes, but not really. Voidspire tactics is better, you should try it first. Combat and character building are great, but Horizon's Gate dilutes Voidspire's interconnectedness with kinda samey open world. Also it doesn't quite work as a pirating-privateering game, world here is too peaceful and sweet. Even writing tone reflects that. Fractions do not wage wars, it's very easy to outrun sea monsters, and actual pirates are rare breed. There are no danger to travel, and sea dogs don't get drunk at the taverns, no, they discuss whether cake is a pie. On the other hand, it does work as exploring game. You can set sail into uncharted map and find something.
