Hopeless Sea begins in the late stages of a climatic apocalypse—triggered by the domino effect of global warming, which caused a sudden and drastic rise in global temperatures, leading to the massive melting of polar ice caps. By the mid-21st century, nearly all polar ice had vanished, resulting in a global sea level rise of over 50 meters. This rendered 90% of the world’s coastal megacities uninhabitable. Extreme climate shifts and misguided countermeasures led to the disappearance of vast populations, forcing the survivors to migrate inland to escape relentless tsunamis and storms.
Meanwhile, an unforeseen mutation emerged in the oceans—massive, frenzied sea creatures began appearing in waves. These aberrant beings frequently invaded human settlements, threatening the last remnants of civilization. To save humanity from ruin, their final hope was dispatched into the Hopeless Sea, tasked with uncovering the truth behind this catastrophe and eradicating its root cause.

Choose commander and hull, upgrade traits with your choices. But look, diamonds are dropping! They are awards for eliminating enemies. Collect them and exchange for weapons, upgrades and more at blackmarket.
Defeat bosses and find out the story behind. Elite enemies will show no mercy to those weakened; any mistake you make may lead to Perma Death. So, stay curious, but most importantly, stay cautious.
What emerges from the sea remains unpredictable, so prepare to face procedurally generated monster squads, thus each run is unique! Slay hordes of monsters before they halt your progress.
If you fail, most unfortunately, you will lose all your progress. Yet don't panic at all, all the resources you've collected this run will be automatically used for unlocking new ships from the shipyard. Each time you die, you die with honor. Pick your favorite ship, wield your favorite weapon, and get ready to smash through the sea in this bloodshed.
Hopefully, you will manage to escape from this Hopeless Sea!

Reviews
First of all: This game had quite a few bugs, including forced shutdowns, but at the time of writing this review, most of them have been fixed. In addition, the developers are actively working on updates, and the game is being refined over time, so there is no need to worry too much. Post-apocalyptic world caused by global warming. It has created a tremendous threat in the form of giant marine creatures. The story is about heroines who stand up to protect humanity. The fact that the player controls only anime girls is a major plus. Personally, I was highly motivated to play through to the end. While the visuals appear simple at first glance, the game is surprisingly engaging as a shoot'em up, incorporating modern elements such as various aircraft with distinct base abilities, main/sub weapons, relics obtained through random choices, and purchasable supplies earned from enemy defeat points. At the time of writing, enemies are extremely tough. However, the combination of aircraft and main/sub weapons plus additional synergies makes it surprisingly manageable, and the process of considering these elements is incredibly enjoyable. Additionally, the relics obtained upon clearing each stage have random elements, allowing for different experiences with each playthrough, which adds to the replay value. I feel this is a title worth trying for both arcade shoot'em up enthusiasts and modern shoot'em up players seeking a challenging experience. Video: https://x.com/hhfcurator/status/1933815616642957674
Check out our Steam curator , YouTube channel and X(Twitter)!
I decided to give this one a try. Getting straight to the point the game is decent in the grand scheme but currently needs a lot of work before I can fully support it. It’s a roguelike STG which in my opinion is somewhat hard to nail down considering the nature of randomness and what the developer decides to make procedurally generated. I’ve 1CCed the game on the hardest difficulty and found it to be very generous but also somewhat spacious at times. The game involves you choosing a ship type and being able to unlock different kinds of ship types during multiple runs. After a stage you are able to upgrade your shot type, health and acquire more bombs. The game gives a snowball effect making you pretty powerful by the end of the game. The game has a cool artstyle and the chiptune music is a nice touch. It’s a very casual shmup experience. Because it’s a roguelike, the game can at the same time feel like there's a lack of variety especially considering the stages aren’t really stages but new “waves of enemies”. On hard, there were heavy amounts of downtime where the enemies don’t immediately spawn and you’re left just scrolling. I assume that is a bug though. The game’s bullet speed is somewhat inconsistent to the background speed causing bullets to linger but it's not too bad. I would recommend it for those who are new but for those looking for a more hardcore experience this is probably not it and thats ok.

Fight through fixed stages, unlock traits and upgrades, but roguelite elements are minimal in this decent but generic shoot'em-up that doesn't deliver content for its high price. At the start, you choose one of five characters. As is typical in roguelite games, only one character is available at the beginning, and the others unlock as you reach certain milestones. The exact criteria for unlocking new characters aren't clear, it's likely tied to in-game currency, but after each game over, you fill a progress bar, and once it's full, the next character becomes available. Each character comes with a unique ship, though you’re free to choose your main weapons separately. In addition to selecting your character, you also pick from four primary and three secondary weapons. Primary weapons include basics like a rapid-fire machine gun or a slower, powerful shotgun. Secondary weapons feature torpedoes, homing missiles, and freeze-inducing icicles. You can mix and match these as you like, but your choices are locked in unless your character's ship has weapon-specific perks. The gameplay itself is simple and accessible, with no complex mechanics. Just hold down the fire button, use the occasional limited-supply bomb to clear nearby threats, and take out enemies. Survive long enough, and the stage ends, advancing you to the next level. The roguelite aspect comes into play between stages, where you choose from one of three random traits. These can be quite impactful, adding a rear-facing cannon, increasing the likelihood of reward drops, and more. After each stage, you also access an upgrade screen where you can spend diamonds collected from fallen enemies. Here, you can upgrade your main weapons, restore or enhance your health, or buy additional bombs. Weapon upgrades improve damage, firing rate, and projectile count. Upgrading is essential, as each new stage throws more enemies at you, and crowd control quickly becomes critical. Both primary and secondary weapons can be upgraded up to level 5, with each level costing more than the last. On normal difficulty, the game is fairly easy, especially once your weapons are fully upgraded. This can happen within a few stages, and it’s even quicker if you acquire a magnet trait that instantly pulls all diamonds on the screen to you. Normally, collecting diamonds means maneuvering close to them, which can be risky with enemies swarming. One major point is that, aside from the random traits, the game doesn’t truly embrace roguelite mechanics. Stages and enemy placements are fixed, and each run plays out identically, including recurring boss fights after every third stage. The developers did patch a critical bug that previously crashed the game when you bought out the entire store, but a few minor issues remain. The main one is the character unlock progress bar, which appears broken and doesn’t update properly. Interestingly, when I restarted the game, I found that three additional characters had unlocked without any notification. There’s also a problem with achievements: some unlock without meeting the criteria, while others don’t unlock at all. Thankfully, these issues don’t affect gameplay. Update: achievements work, but it's possible to get most of them very easily; after beating the game once, you can start a new game with a new character and instantly end the run because the win message from the last boss doesn't go away.
Played two runs so far and Hopeless Sea has a solid start. The perk system, in general, provides meaningful choices for planning your builds. It's the backbone of what makes a good roguelite fun. Choosing a character and getting to choose various primary and secondary weapons works well, feels good, and makes each run feel intentional for exploring your shmup playstyles. The music leans into upbeat chiptune vibes that match the pace and keep things moving. The game on Normal mode isn't crazy hard, which is nice and gives space to experiment. Unlocking new characters through Roguelike progression feels rewarding and adds replay value. Character perks are a nice touch too. I'm curious to see how deep that system gets as I play more. Light criticism: enemy waves sometimes drag, then suddenly swarm, so the pacing could use a little smoothing out. Still, I’m excited to see how the developer grows the game moving forward.
Not for me.
Alright. After clearing hard mode, I have to make some critiques. Before I dive in, the game is fun. It has a cool aesthetic which I really enjoy. The nautical theme is fun. I overall like the game, but the game has some big problems. All of them involving the game's difficulty. First, the AI of the enemies needs to be tweaked. All enemies come from the top of the screen and travel downwards. You can easily camp the top of the screen after just a few upgrades and stop many enemies from spawning. This is even an issue in hard mode. Even just having enemies that spawn from different points of the screen and travel up or across would help a lot. Elite enemies should probably have more of a presence, maybe firing sooner than they do so that you can't delete them before they fire. Basically, if you are anything above a noob at shmups, you will be able to manipulate the AI too easily even on the hardest difficulty. The game is way too easy. Second, the characters need to have fixed weapons and undergo some balance changes. No more choosing your own weapons. The characters are laughably unbalanced as they are. The pirate lady I unlocked first is INSANELY overpowered with her bullet cancelling. Restricting each character to weapons that balance their strengths with weaknesses would go very far to making this a more challenging game. Third, balancing the levelups. I don't even have a good suggestion here. It feels slightly too easy to snowball in this game. Although, with the other problems fixed, this probably wouldn't be an issue. This may not need to be changed if the other changes are effective enough. Still leaving this here for something to think about. Fourth, a suggestion I think the devs may enjoy. If you (the devs) disagree with some of my critiques and have a vision for the game that more aligns with how it already is, introduce further game modes with some of my changes. That way you can have your original vision of the easier game without alienating hardcore shmup fans. Honestly, it may be possible to fix the game by just updating the hardest difficulty to be more in line with my vision. My suggestion, personally, would be to keep your original 3 difficulties as a Novice game mode and create a new game mode with the changes I've suggested. This is based on Cave's approach to difficulty settings, specifically Mushihimesama which is considered a classic in the genre. Truly, it's the best of both worlds. Everyone wins. Lastly, sorry for creating work for you (the devs). I appreciate the cool game you've created and I don't mean to sound entitled to your labor. These are just suggestions. The game is fine as is if you want a very easy game. I just can't recommend the game as is. I'd prefer to mark this review as informational, like curation pages, but that is not an option for standard reviews. Good luck! Your game has much potential.
