It's a Triple Town ripoff, and a bad one. No music, no unique sound effects (just a generic 'bubble' sound when things slide), only one tile set, no apparent way to select 'levels', extremely confusing menu layout. After my first game I "Had some undo left" or something. It's just an "improve your score" game. It's so poorly put together for PC that some buttons are actually cut off at the edge of the window. One of those games where you wonder, "How did this get on Steam?" Then you remember, "because Steam has no quality control." There is no tutorial, no instructions, absolutely nothing to get you going. Don't waste your money.
2048 is an addictive puzzle game where you pair up identical numbers. Tiles with the number 2 gets dropped in a 4x4 grid, you'll have to pair those to make them 4,8,16,32,64,128 and so on. You keep playing till you reach the 2048 tile or until the grid is filled with tiles and it's game over. In this version the numbers got replaced for tiles with historical monuments. By pairing two of the same, a new one appears and as you unlock more historical monuments, you slowly travel through the evolution of mankind. The game runs smoothly, the graphics look great, and the color scheme used make the game pleasant to look at. The game is both relaxing and frustrating at the same time, and I'm glad the developer implemented an undo option. However, the waiting time after using the undo option doesn't make much sense to me... There is a lot of detail in the tiles that I wish I could look at up close. It would also be nice if you could change the angle of the board. Apart from a few displeasing factors, my overall experience with the game is great, and I specially recommend it to those that enjoy 2048 games.
Just 2048
Quite simply, this is 2048 played with a fancy historical tile set. Aside from the graphics, the main features that distinguish it from all the other clones are an undo button with a 20 second cooldown and, judging from the level 'unlock' screen which shows your progress, a maximum tile 'level' of 16 (=65k in a traditional 2048 game using number tiles). Scoring for each match increases by 5 for each tile level, instead of doubling, so you can't compare scores with the traditional version. If you haven't played 2048 before, play it for free on the web or mobile to see if you like it before buying this. Preferably play a version with instructions or a tutorial, since you won't get either here.
Technical implementation
The game is built on Unreal Engine 4, which seems like overkill for a game like this. It's surprisingly CPU intensive even when idle, using about 30% on a recent i5 laptop (enough to turn on the fan and reduce battery life), and matches don't animate smoothly on a Bay Trail tablet. Since you can't zoom or rotate the board, pre-rendered tiles could easily have been used together with a more efficient game engine. On two different Windows 10 systems, the game crashed every time the machine woke up from sleep mode. Fortunately the game saves your progress as you go along, but this is still inexcusable. Keyboard control is available on the WASD keys, but you have to work this out for yourself (arrow keys being the usual choice for 2048). Because the grid is shown in isometric view, a diagonally placed layout such as the numpad corners might have been clearer.
Theming
The game is available for free-with-ads on mobile. Combined with a lack of cards and achievements would be normally enough for me to ignore the Steam version. However, one look at the screenshots on a 4-inch phone makes it clear that these graphics are far too cluttered for small screens (see Tokyo 2048 for minimalist graphical version which fits far better on a phone). Even on a laptop, a full board can be harder to read quickly than a numerical grid, but the fancy graphics do help justify the decision to play what is essentially a phone game on your PC. Having not studied the screenshots closely enough, I expected a 'development of civilization' theme, starting from cavemen (as featured) but moving up though typical or famous structures of the various eras: mud huts, pyramids, castles, Tudor mansions, bridges, airports and so on. Instead, most tiles depict unique one-off historic events, which you're then supposed to make pairs of. This might be fine using virtual playing cards, but having a 3D scene with a bunch of identical Trojan horses scattered around the board and the unique rock pass of the Battle of Thermopylae plopped down in every corner just feels weird. It also stunts your sense of progress, because instead of building up a city or country, you just feel like you're trapped in a very long version of Groundhog Day (Groundhog Millennium?) where another first-ever Olympics is due to take place every couple of minutes. Another problem with the theming, at least for a non-expert player like myself, is that almost all the history depicted in a typical playthrough is ancient history. The traditional 'winning tile' (level 11, representing a score of 2048) is
the Knights of the Round Table
, with the 'birth of our era' (first century AD) coming just two tiles earlier. So you'll have to beat the game as originally designed many times over in a single session to stand any chance of seeing scenes from the Age of Exploration or anything from the second half of the trailer. I would have expected the '2048' tile to depict, if not the present day, then perhaps the Victorian Age, with a bit of 20th century history left over for the advanced players. Overall, although the art style is pleasant and choice of theme is interesting, this feels like a missed opportunity.
Slide tiles and upgrade two of the same kind to a higher tier. Rather simple game with good aesthetics. For me it gets boring after 5 minutes.

I do not recommand this game!!! (I didn't write in capitals but don't kid yourselves, I'm screaming!). It crashes as soon as you press "play"; I reported the crash as requested and nobody answered. I'm asking for a refund. I never saw such a rip-off! I'll remember the name of the company, that's a promise... :( grr...
PROS: + Tried-and-true "2048" puzzle gameplay. + Easy to learn. + Appealing animated graphics that represent different time periods in history. + Simple controls (mouse or WASD). + Very lightweight (so virtually any computer could run it) and only takes up 140 MB. + Inexpensive at only $1.99 USD NEUTRAL: +/- I wish we could change the orientation of the game board. When using WASD, it's sometimes difficult to figure out which key corresponds to which direction because we're viewing the board at an angle. CONS: - It's basically "2048" which you can find for free as a Flash game online or as an Android/iOS app. - The graphics might not interest someone who isn't interested in history. - There's no options menu whatsoever, only a little sound icon in the lower left-hand corner that switches the sound on or off. - The game always starts in a window. - No "exit" button, so you need to close the program itself in order to exit. - No Steam Cloud. I've played many "2048" games in the past and so far, this has to be my favorite. I love the history motif and for the price (a cup of coffee, if you're lucky), it's well worth the entertainment value. I admit, I probably won't spend hours upon hours with it, but if I want to listen to a podcast or music, or I'm in a situation where I have "too much time to sit there, but not enough to get into anything complex" it's perfect. Some of the reviews you'll see comment on how this game is a rip-off of some other similar title. That's only true IF every single other game that's similar to any other game is considered a rip-off as well. Look at every genre around (RTS, TBS, FPS, etc) and within each genre, you'll see games that are virtually identifical in style and gameplay, where the only immediately obvious difference is the graphics. No one considers those games rip-offs, so why this one? VERDICT: If you like history and "2048" games, you can't go wrong at this price point, so I'd definitely recommend it. If, however, losing out on a small, regular coffee is too much to handle, wait for a sale so you can save a whole fifty cents.
