"Hippocampus" is a badly made third person hack and slash game kitbashed out of the Unreal Engine (and almost certainly with a bunch of flipped assets) along with a couple of paid fake reviews from Russia. What's the game about? This is a free-to-play, third-person action-adventure game with hack-and-slash combat and platforming. Set in a gothic, dark fantasy world, the player navigates hallucinatory environments driven by memory exploration. Gameplay involves fighting enemies with gore and dismemberment mechanics, alongside traversing platform sections and solving occasional puzzles. The experience presents a level of difficulty. The game graphics look better than you might expect, but that's just because it looks like some or all of them are "borrowed" from asset stores or wherever. Gamers can tell... and it comes across as insincere. There's also the old adage that those who lack the budget and talent to make their own game assets usually lack the budget and talent to do the rest of the job of game development properly, too. It's free... now, but it wasn't before. The developer was charging $12 USD for this. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It's a nice gesture for the game to be given away for free, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 6 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away.
Warning: Review Manipulation! This game features a small number of fake positive reviews from accounts known to be in the business of review manipulation/paid reviews. They're all written in either Russian or broken English, appear at almost exactly the same time, very shortly after the game launched on Steam, all have a direct Steam purchase of the game, and the accounts are used consistently to write fake reviews for asset flips and other cash grabs/scams. The "Positive" review score on this game should be disregarded due to this blatant, unethical review manipulation. This is done to deceive and scam gamers into paying for a bad product. Due to the 2024 FTC ruling (16 CFR Part 465), these fake reviews are a violation of US Federal Law.
Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Nope. This isn't worth downloading. While this didn't cost me any money up front, I still feel ripped off.

Has some potential, but frustrating to play as is. Got to the end of chapter 1. HP system feels weirdly inconsistent (especially upon re-spawn), making it difficult to complete some of the puzzles without dying multiple times and hoping you spawn in with enough health. Definitely more of a puzzle game than a souls-like hack and slash.

Rating: Dito: 3.6/5 Chat: 3/5 Gesamt: 3.3/5
First of all: why does this game launch SteamVR when you start it? But fine, let's ignore that and give it a chance. The game opens with a menu that's already terrible, but somehow it only gets worse. Want to change the settings? "Fatal error". Off to a fantastic start. Then it gets even better. The main menu lets me press "Continue" (instead of having "New Game" as the only option), even though I'd never played before. Curious, I clicked it. The game greeted me with "Here we go again" and dropped me into an empty room with absolutely no indication of what I was supposed to do. Amazing. Having the time of my life. So I went back, started a new game, and played through the tutorial. Movement with the orbs feels awful. Then comes the combat tutorial, where you learn that swinging your sword costs you health. Great design. Sounds like fun. After that, the game drops you into the exact same room from the fake "Continue" option. At least now you know what you're supposed to do, so you keep pushing through level after level... only to discover that it never gets any better. This was a miserable experience from start to finish. I couldn't take it anymore after about 20 minutes. Painful, frustrating, and genuinely one of the worst first impressions I've had in a long time.
