-------------------------------------------------------------------- We play as 4 survivors. Our task is to repair the helicopter, refuel and fly to the next building. And so to infinity. There is no plot in the game. There are also no achievments. Crashes and freezes are a common thing here. If the developers figured out the crashes, tweaked the mechanics and added a storyline, then it would be much more interesting to play. In the meantime, the game is raw and I will not recommend it.
It could have some bug fixes and improvements, but it is a good game.
2/10 really thought i would like this, but it just feels like a sad unfinished mobile port My Disappointment Is Immeasurable And My Day Is Ruined
Highrisers is a game about survival where you need to get a group of four people off the high rise to safety away from the dreamers. You control Jes, Ike, Ann, and Mo for their survival on the high rise from the dreamers that lurk on the lower levels. You must scavenge the high rise for resources to repair your helicopter to escape to safety as well as find food along the way to survive in the meantime. You can create weapons and materials to help you in your time on the high rise. The dreamers will attack and hurt you as well as not eating, so you must make sure to make smart decisions. The day will go from day to night and when it reaches night, the dreamers will head further up the high rise, but if you survive the night, you get to level up a character. Scavenging takes some time as well as it'll take up slots in your inventory, so you'll need to make sure to unload your stuff every once in a while. You can disassemble things in the high rise, which can vary in time, which will yield more parts for you to use. There are certain things that can only be interacted with if you have the appropriate items to use. There are some other things you can do like investigate items (I don't know exactly what it's called, it has a magnifying glass), which takes more time than disassembling most times. You can build your own weapons and equip them to the people (there's a specific equip slot separate from the regular inventory) and make materials, which each require their own bench to do. The game is alright, but it suffers from one prominent problem: crashing. One thing I've noticed on how it crashes is if you decide to manage one of the characters' inventories to move items and when it goes from night to day as that's also when the perk unlock screen will pop up. There is an autosave in the game, but I don't know when exactly it saves (maybe on the day and night cycles) and from what I've seen, I don't think I've seen a popup saying it has saved. Also, there is a manual save, which happens to be Save and Quit, so you need to quit the game to the main menu to then reopen the game if you want to manually save. One issue from the game crashing I've noticed is that when I went to continue from one of my save files, it was autosaved when they were fighting some dreamers, but no one was attacking them until one of the members died, so that was rather annoying. The visuals are alright as there's a lot to show with the high rise being more than 30 levels. The issue I find with the inventory is that there's no color coding and they're just outlines of the items, so they could all look similar when in the inventory. The music is alright as well as there's not much change in music. One thing about this game is that the characters all have voice lines, which I find to make the game more appealing, but some of the lines do get annoying or sound silly. I wouldn't recommend this game even if there weren't any crashing, but the crashing in the game is what really annoys me the most about this game. Also, I don't think I ever got far enough to really get invested in the game as well as I'm pretty sure I was about to run out of resources in the next day. The levels are randomly generated, so you could just get unlucky with the game.
Highrisers is a 2D retro pixel survival/crafting/platespinning game where you're in a side-view office tower and you need to juggle your 4 characters to scavenge, repair, eat, fight and survive. Inventory management is central to the game, but at heart this is more platespinner (keep everything moving) than it is a strategic or thinking persons game. There's a pause option, but the general crux of the game is frenetic action. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but there's numerous reports the game is poorly made and barely if at all tested, with numerous bugs and crashes. Despite this being only available on PC, it's got a number of defects and design flaws that indicate the game was intended to be for a different platform than PC, but here we are, on PC, for PC games, not whatever this is. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals. The developers didn't design the game for modern gaming PCs, as such the game resolution caps out at 1440p, a lower resolution that became mainstream back in around 2010 and became obsolete when 4K entered the mainstream in 2014. The game simply won't look right on high end modern gaming displays due to this failure on the part of the developers. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers. Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the video game construction kit/toolset, HaxeFlixel. This is a very poor quality toolset designed to make cross-platform games, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. The choice of a cross-platform game engine implies this was always intended for platforms other than PC. This looks and feels like a mobile app, but I wasn't able to find it on the app stores. Maybe it was removed, maybe it was rejected by Apple and Google (they do have more rigorous quality standards than Valve does for Steam, after all). Regardless, for all intents and purposes this is a mobile app, it has the same limitations and dumbed down qualities. It's impossible to recommend such a game to PC gamers. We don't spend all this money building gaming rigs so we can pretend they're iPhones. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. Highrisers has the ridiculous price of $14 USD (for pixeltrash!!!), for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games, let alone the sheer number of free games available on Steam. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. Because this is the kind of game you can just play for free on mobile phones, it's impossible to recommend anyone should pay money for the same experience on Steam.
