Craving an adventure that's more than just black and white?
Heroes of Shaola throws you into a world where good and evil are tangled up tighter than a goblin's beard!
This ain't your typical fairy tale. Sure, you'll fight monsters and explore forgotten land, but get ready for some tough choices along the way. The characters you meet are just as complex as the world itself - some with noble intentions, others with hidden agendas. Can you tell friend from foe?
In the heart of the world sprawled the Zenman Empire, a titan amongst kingdoms. Nestled within its fertile plains lay Zalumi, the grand capital, a city shimmering with wealth and guarded by four noble houses – the Sutherlands, the Pantelakos, the Totens, and the Rileys.
Yet, a shadow crept upon Zenman's grandeur. The Martia Kingdom, once scattered tribes, now a bloodthirsty force, glared down from the north, their hunger for conquest a constant threat. Southward, the Amazail Kingdom, cloaked in an air of deceptive power, watched with silent ambition.
Each year, these vassal kingdoms paid tribute to Zenman – a heavy burden of gold, weapons, and even the most beautiful women within their borders. Yet, whispers of discontent grew louder with each passing season. Both Martia and Amazail yearned to break free from Zenman's iron grip.
Then, a tremor shook the very foundation of Zenman's power. Leonardo, the sole heir to the Sutherland house, vanished without a trace. Panic rippled through Zalumi, a stark reminder of the empire's growing vulnerability.
Meanwhile, whispers reached the Zenman court from a shadowy organization known as the Iron Eagle – both Martia and Amazail were plotting. An alliance brewed in the north and south, a storm threatening to engulf the once-mighty Zenman Empire.
Brace yourself for an unforgettable journey filled with twists, treasures, and triumphs. Here’s why you’ll want to dive right in:
A Story That Keeps You Hooked: Unravel a captivating narrative filled with surprises! You never know what's coming next.

Twelve years ago, is the first time you come across a strange crystal, and ever since that moment it has followed you no matter where you went. You are the only one who can see and touch the crystal and as such your parents think that you’re on drugs or just plain crazy after telling them. After many visits from therapists, psychiatrists, wizards and healers to examine if you’ve lost the plot, but no one could find anything wrong with your sanity. However, you were diagnosed with Minor Delusional Disorder, something which could help your parents understand what is going off with you. Minor Delusional Disorder is a harmless and it would go away as you grow older. No matter how many times you threw the crystal away or where you threw it, the damned thing kept finding its way back to you the next day. Six years ago, you found yourself dreaming and somehow was inside the crystal. Within the crystal were two goddesses, one looked like an angel and the other looked like a fairy. Both of who claimed to be the guardian of the crystal and the other was their assistant. They say that you’re one of the chosen and have the potential to become a great hero, as a Shaola Protector. The goddesses tell you to come and see them on your eighteenth birthday for a tutorial. You’ll enter the crystal for your tutorial, here you’ll be shown the basic controls for keyboard, mouse and game pad. The crystal guardians will tell you about the basic mechanics and gameplay of the game. Once the game starts there’s a bit of a story which plays out and eventually, you’ll be in control of Leonardo. This is where your adventure starts. You’ll follow a storyline where you’ll need to make your way somewhere or complete a mission. There are some side missions you can complete, and you’ll be rewarded for completing these with some gold, potions etcetera. As you make your way through the game, you’ll come across various characters, some will aid you while others won’t. Scattered here and there you will find items like wood, fruit or other items, sometimes items are hidden in small shrubs. When entering a battle, you’ll be able to use a normal attack, use any skills you may have unlocked as you progress. Using skills will cost Mana Points, how many depends on the skill, some require a few hundred points. You can also use items from your inventory while in battle, replace health or mana points, remove ailments by using potions. At the end of a battle you will be rewarded with some experience points, gold and may be some other times. You can also try your luck and search a dead body after leaving the battle screen, sometimes you can gain more items. As you gain experience points your characters will increase their level, certain items can help increase your level by giving you a boost in experience points. There are also items which can increase your strength, luck, defense etcetera, you’ll collect these from battles or may find them hidden in chests or shrubs. If you forget what you’re supposed to be doing, you can check the Story Quest in the menu, you will also find your Items (Inventory), Skill, Equipment, Status, Bestiary, Save, Load, Game Options and Exit. There’s not much in the way of options, selecting F1 will take you to Game Properties and Control Configurations. You can toggle between a small window or full screen by using ALT+ENTER. You can use either keyboard, mouse or game pad, I played the game using my Xbox360 game pad with no problems. You can change the games difficulty at any time during the game (Easy, Normal, Hard and Legendary), with Normal as the default setting. I found the game a bit slow towards the start and at one point I couldn’t find where I was supposed to go. There wasn’t really anything to indicate where to go next as the road just stopped halfway through one of the screens. I found it in the end but before I did, I was clicking on every tree, bush, stone and blade of grass looking for the undercover hideout. I also had the game crash on me a couple of times, but it wasn’t much of a problem as you can save at any time in the game and use any of the fifty save slots available to you. One thing which I didn’t like was when trying to take a screen shot. Pressing F12 as per the norm for taking screen shots on Steam, would send you back to the main menu screen. This happened a couple times with me and at certain points where I hadn’t saved for a little while. So, you might want to make sure you either change F12 in Steams overlay (if you use default setting) or save at regular periods in case you do happen to hit F12 and get sent back to main menu and lose any progress you may have made. Positives + Good graphics + Decent Storyline + Multiple endings Negatives - Crashed a few times - F12 Sends you back to main menu rather than taking a screen shot - No achievements - No cards currently With the guidance of the goddesses from within the mysterious crystal, lead Leonardo to become one of the Shaola protectors. 6/10 [quote]Key provided by developer/publisher for review purposes via THE CPT FROGGY CLUB! Game loaded with funny curiosities, game that looks like typical RPGmaker, but still game that is unique and playable. Iron helmet is superior to steel helmet and steel helmet is better than adamantium helmet. HP potions are blue, MP potions are red (Confusion level 34) You find a secret hideout filled with notes on "How to avoid the boring experience grinding, normies have to do. While they need to spend time and effort, you can access secret receipt that is a shortcut to wisdom and experience" Well What actually happened: I had to train 4 years, kill rats and bugs, traverse labyrinths... Oh, I see, totally a 'shortcut'. But there are also good and funny moments, despite the story tries to be serious and heart-touching. You can travel inside a small gem, that you keep in your pocket (mindblowing, right?) You can smash green bushes, to either get some fruit or permanent max HP boost. You can jump over obstacles - which is neat, sadly the world offers only limited exploration, so the fun lasts only so long. Names of NPCs chosen from random classic literature, so the plot is mixture of such sources. If it's for the better or the worse, I will leave you to decide. I was not very amused, personally. Your party is total mess, people are joining and leaving your party. Quests are quite oversimplified (well, that is usually good for me). Level-up system is the standard RPGMaker style, so just getting XP is the way of getting stronger (well, there are seeds = consumables, that boost attributes like HP, STR, SPEED... those are very rare tho) Despite some loop holes, hic-ups, or story-weak-points, in general the game is not bad. Anyone who has a thing for RPG games, can enjoy this game.
this game needs to be played at least twice to find all hidden areas. great storyline with many questions and political overtures. the bestiary list is a great idea. what it does need is the ability to run without using key. Some parts are very dark esp in caves and hard to see the creatures, There are plenty of chests etc and other places to get items and gold and side quests to help. Overall all it is a great game and looking forward to the follow up in the series.

easily one of the worst games i have ever played in my life
After 2.2 hours, here are my thoughts of the game. The design was very similar to Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, where you not only have traditional JRPG battles but also have ARPG elements to interact with the environment. This game takes it a step further with corpse looting. The graphics match up to late-gen SNES titles (I compare it to 7th Saga to a certain degree). The interface is competent and the controls are smooth when walking the overland map. Menuing in the limited shop menus is fluid. There is a metal vibe in the battle music which is a nice departure from the more "ambiance" style of RPG music. There is a sense of a huge story in the background and it could potentially develop into a good game to give a full playthrough. The game has a number of flaws though. Controller support is listed in the help menu but doesn't work. Also the "instruction manual", if you can call it that, is buried in the game files and you have to hunt for it. The introduction is overly-long and very boring (just text w/ a little music) and if you include the tutorial can take well over 20 minutes before you actually play the game. There is also a problem where if you play the game in full screen the only real option as a content creator is to use Display capture; otherwise you end up playing it in a ridiculously small window with a window capture (I think the window isn't even 640x480 in size. However, thankfully if you are not content creating the fullscreen option helps you immensely. However, despite the slow start of the game, I have a feeling based on my gaming experience that there is much more to the game once you get past the first area. However, the developer really needs to put full controller support in the game, especially if the game is to live up to the "Zelda-like" overworld feel they claim it has. At $4.99 the cost is comparable to many other indie RPG titles and while the negatives I listed are irritating it is nothing that I feel should stop anyone from enjoying the game. As I stated, there is a feel that the game has a good story that will develop once you get past the the initial 2 hours of the game. So I can recommend this game despite the faults. Watch my Heroes of Shaola video to see what I experienced - https://youtu.be/RdhOSjzQwC4
Not recommended. This is not all bad, but it didn't hold my interest with its sub-par production quality. The graphics are very dated and lots of the audio are RPG Maker stock assets. The story has promise and the world seems fairly fleshed out with some attention to detail. What detracted heavily for me was the poor writing quality and even worse localization, too much stock RPG Maker UI/menus/assets, clunky movement controls, poor animations and a lack of proper game flow/design. I would be less critical if this were free, but there are much better RPG Maker games out there.
Cutscenes are way too long, I want to play the game.
This game is great, nice graphics, great story and very exciting. I look forward to continuing Heroes of Shaola or other games from Smiling Dragon RPG Studios. World of Shaola is great. I highly recommend to all players who love this genre of games and other players who play other games. Best regards Tael
