Everyone thinks you saved the world, but it was all a lie! You faked a "prophecy" with magical illusions. But now, your prophecy is coming true.

I had a miserable time with this. I tend to buy CoG titles that pass the 500k word mark because ideally it's going to be something I enjoy and want as much of as possible. But with this, I simply felt sick at the prospect at some point. Like, oh no, I'm only three or four or five or whatever chapters in and I just want it to end already. There are several occasions where every choice presented is actually a negative choice. A good early example is meeting someone's mother. No matter how you greet her, her and your current company will be aggravated toward you. I save scummed and tweaked traits and stats and nothing changed this. Again, this is something that happens regularly, even if you're the most charming and accomplished liar. As far as stats go, maybe they account for something toward the end, but it's difficult as a player to discern how they affect what you're trying to do. And stat increases themselves always seem to have an opportunity cost attached them, which you could argue makes sense, but when there are so many stats to begin with, it quickly becomes a sisyphean task to be decent at anything as you watch the bars go up and down in seemingly arbitrary ways. I really hated all the characters. Maybe they develop into something more interesting later on, but why should I invest time on people who seem to despise me no matter what I do. Every character has a binary feeling about lying/telling the truth, which seems counterintuitive and incredibly petty when the world is being threatened. They also always seem to speak past you as opposed to speaking with you, if that makes any sense. Despite being the protagonist, you receive no respect, consideration, or comfort from the people closest to you. It becomes impossible to rationalise why you're even doing anything about the problem at all. Let these jerks deal with it. The one male love interest who is just always around is one of the most inadvertently abusive encounters I've had in a game and I've played otome VNs where I've been locked in cages. He spends the early chapters emotionally cucking you more or less, ignoring your repeated expressions of interest, being deliberately vague about his relationship with another woman. Despite being a career liar, he is irrationally angry that someone, gasp, lied to him. When trying to rationalise this betrayal to him, you can bring up how lovers shouldn't lie to each other. (This is yet another scene where there's no positive choice.) He shrugs off your statement in a rude manner, which tbh makes him repulsively irredeemable from that point on. Other things happen later that further make you feel as though you've wasted your time trying to woo this dude. It's downright cruel. I suppose it's possible he has some kind of eureka moment but his love confession, if it exists, would have to be the most eloquent and powerful piece of writing to exist to excuse how poorly he treats you and I doubt it is. Besides saving the world, there's politics which on a good day is boring but in this is extra tedious. Again, everyone seems to hate you no matter how far you bend over backwards for them so what is the point. You're expected to take sides but it's a skyrim situation where "who the hell cares." I ultimately didn't finish a full playthrough of this CYOA. I prefer to imagine the world got destroyed because it's what everyone deserves.

Just not my thing. Story is okay. It is heavily stat based and choices should be chosen based on your highest stat as they will fail otherwise nearly if all the time making you look like a fool. Same with traits. Maybe I will give it another chance some other time as I DID spend the full price for it, which honestly for what I have seen so far is not worth it. Buy at your own risk. You probably won't mind if you don't care about stat based ones or prefer those, but it just doesn't feel like I am crafting my own story, rather I am forced into making choices.
Interesting story. The first few chapters were good, but then started getting railroaded by the writing. Very obvious which choice the writer wanted readers to take as other choices either had no effect, had the opposite effect, or were just not presented even after the text mentioned them.
I haven't played much of this game yet but I can already say that it was a waste of money that I will certainly refund. I do not care how well the writing and choices might get, the writer has chosen to ruin the story just to get cooky points with the Lgtb+ community. Now, I am someone that really likes political ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ going on so I am not letting it go that the Author just completely shafted a large part of it just for the sake of throwing in a gay couple. Guess what, having a proper heir is important as ♥♥♥♥ for royalty but despite this no one even so much as hints that the princess's choice to marry a chick was a problem. And her cousin(who is a man) also gets openly courted by dudes. The author obviously wanted to get easy plus points with the Lgtb+ community but didn't care enough to make sure that this wouldn't completely ♥♥♥♥ over their storytelling, so I do not see why I should give them any money.
First off, I just want to say that as a whole, the game is great. If you're looking for a long, enjoyable, well-written story with equally long paragraphs, this is for you. If you're looking for a romance driven one... this is probably less for you. The romance is, as best of a word that I can find for it, clunky. The options for choosing what to do/say when romancing are about as confusing as any of the options are overall. They always seemed so fast paced for me. As someone that prefers to flirt first before throwing myself into the frying pan with someone, I was left to put the romance off until about 2/3 the way through the story. At that point, I figured it was now or never to start romancing someone and got secondhand embarrassment the entire time. The characters are very sweet! But the emotional connection before romancing them is... a rough transition. Not to mention!!! You start out as a liar!!! Idk how I'm supposed to feel deserving of affections when I'm trying to atone! ;n; Onto the story! The story is sooooo well written! The depth of the characters and how things affect them and how even as they grow, they grow in a believable direction. They feel real. I love the characters, I love the story, and I love the plot. I do want to say though that the choices are worded really weird and you think you're choosing something and on the next page it comes out entirely different. It was.... very confusing to say the least. I wish the choices were less ambiguous in nature and were a bit more clear in their intent so that you knew what you were intending when you chose them. All in all, it's a good game and I enjoyed it.
Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 592: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆ (9/10) Am I crazy, or is Heroes of Myth excellent? I didn't have high expectations tbh; I wasn't a fan of the author's next work, Specters of the Deep, but this one is a super solid work. It takes fantasy tropes and usually plays them straight (except for the major one), but in a way that's pure fun? It has solid writing, complex characters, a fascinating plot and lore, hugely meaningful choices, and an epilogue that's full of choices. It's just a superb work all around! In Heroes of Myth, you play as the typical fantasy hero, the one who saved the world, and all that jazz! Actually, that's a lie. The prophecy that told of your victory was one you made up with your friends; you simply used your illusion magic to lie to the world. Life is good! Except ... everything in the false prophecy has begun to come true. Once again, it's up to you to save the world again—hopefully, for real! No spoilers, but I thought I knew where the plot was going, but there were so many (realistic) twists and turns I was entertained the whole time. I completely recommend this game. And, as always, a thank you to the staff for the review copy!
Pros:
✅ Great choices. I loved how there was no one right path, and even better, how my character could grow throughout the story without the narrative slapping my hand. For example, I RP as a cold, ambitious liar who gleefully lied to everyone. However, as I got to know the cast of characters, I honestly ... kinda began to feel bad for lying so much, lying out of my a*s for years? But I figured I locked in my choice already; the game wouldn't allow me to change. However, with each main character (and some smaller ones), you have the chance to come clean or double down. I thought the flexibility was pretty impressive. I could also change mechanically; my stats shifted to subtlety and humility. I don't always struggle with the "right" choice, but I honestly couldn't tell if my good intentions would lead to a good or bad outcome. ✅ Poly romance. In general, all the romances are wonderful, but I do want to shoutout the poly romance between Alvis and Verity. First, the characters don't hint at a potential romance unless you bring it up. Alvis, in particular, kept his cards close to his chest. Because of story reasons, the poly relationship was a slow burn, full of yearning, and "what-ifs." I LIVE for that. Either way, Alvis and Verity have great platonic or romantic attraction, and it makes sense as to why they would get into a poly romance. It's not just fan service. The actual romance—kissing, communication, hugs—was lovely, as well, with a lot of sweetness and shyness from two usually bold people. ✅ Epilogue. I thought the epilogue was pretty well done. Everything felt resolved, yeah, but it seemed that the game took into account all the different outcomes and my choices. It was long, too, and I'm glad I was allowed to talk to the cast about everyone's plans. Plus, for my success, I was granted many job offers or requests to serve, so I could pick my dream future from like, six options, which felt super great.
Cons:
🟥 Sometimes success is based on (perceived) stats, not personal choice. I've encountered this problem in a lot of IF where, to encourage roleplaying, the author either locks choices based on your personality traits or has you fail entirely. I like the idea, but when executed, it just makes me feel frustrated. People react in different ways at different times, and sometimes I had no idea what trait was being tested. 🟥 Slight bias in Evander over Despina. There's a subplot over picking who would make the better ruler, the ruling princess and your friend's betrothed, or the princess' cousin who can use magic. I felt like the narrative boosted Evander quite a bit. He is a romance option, after all, and he is a Good Guy™️ who is charming and handsome and believes in honesty. Despina, on the other hand, orders you around (polietly), can be said to fail because of the prophecy, and is more withdrawn and shrewd. Still, I believe in #women's rights and #women's wrongs, so I went with her. 🟥 Immersion. This is a tiny nitpick, but if you install Despina as queen, she's gay and seemingly not polyamorous. However, there's a lot of talk about how Evander would make a better ruler because of his magical bloodline. In general, there's a lot of emphasis on bloodline and power achieved from your ancestors. So how's she going to leave an heir to the throne, especially considering she doesn't have magic? That's how a rebellion happens! One of those stories on Choice of Games that ends up becoming a true masterpiece. Your choices in this story are especially important, with them significantly altering the way the next paragraph will be by just one choice. I found it quite phenomenal how at times I may feel like I've made a bad choice only to be able to make a better choice and leave me with no regrets. The Story is also very long with interesting character all around. Everyone felt real and so did the conversations. The epilogue was done in such a way that everything felt resolved with a lot of extra writing just for you. My only issues with the game was at times I felt like I was deciding on what was going to succeed based on my characters perceived stats rather than personal choice. Which I know is a bit of a problem with a lot of choice games. My second issue was romance, I really wish for such a long and captivating story like this there were more fleshed out and consistent romance scenes.
Very interesting game, plot and gameplay wise. Decisions combine abilities with personality in order to be successful, which I found interesting, but might not be for everyone. The characters were interesting and did feel like my choices really mattered; very different paths depend on the choices.
One of the best Choice games I've ever played. The quality of writing is high, the characters are well-developed, each with their own principles and agendas, and the plot offers a satisfying number of threads to resolve while you're saving the world. Most importantly for me in this kind of game: the skill checks all make sense, the length is excellent, and your choices really make a lot of difference to how events play out. If you like text games then this is worth your time.
