Super original, a roguelite JRPG in which instead of becoming stronger, you get weaker. I could never have expected this to be this good.
Honestly a very enjoyable game. It's short (but reasonably so) and can get a bit repetitive, but I had a lot of fun. I've heard some people complain about the hero getting weaker with each passing day, however I genuinely did't see a problem with this. Thematically it's appropriate, makes sense, and it's noted from the beginning this is going to happen. Mechanically it's also not a problem, as long as you take short 3 hour rests when the Hero gets tired and gather some other party members along the way, it never really causes a problem or prevents you from doing anything. Especially if that party member is Yona. Like, I had issues with some implications of her personality, but from a strictly mechanical basis she's a god send. I honestly enjoyed the story for what there was of it (naturally you kinda have to piece things together over multiple playthroughs) and I guessed one or two of the major twists well in advance, but there were still things I never saw coming and I enjoyed that. My one major gripe is that certain events/encounters are far too random (particularly Red Eye Events), which is a crying shame.
An immensely memorable, unique take on many standard roleplaying game tropes popularized by Wizardry and Dragon Quest. With Kenji Ito (SaGa, Final Fantasy Adventure)'s score, it feels like a sendup to the old while looking forward and doing the best that you can with the time that you have, and cherishing life.
Would not recommend. This game gets many things right but still retains archaic jrpg systems that just do not make sense especially in this type of game. A limited time system where you have 5 in game days to figure out a post demon lord world and to locate the hero's "True love" while also resolving the problems of your former teammates and people of the land. The concept of the game is interesting and I enjoy these type of games similar to Majora's Mask, One Minute Hero and Radiant Historia. Unfortunately the cons are too vast to be recommended, plus the feeling of needing a guide for this game as there is too much information kept hidden as they try to extend the games play time with riddles and a monotonous gameplay loop. CONS: Hero must die. Again uses a trial and error system where one loop of life effects the next, but the game does not state as such. It hides many of its story telling and progression in that trial and error system. -The lack of a speedup during fights can make each loop turn stale and the monotony of repeated fights despite being overpowered in the start can make the game boring. -The game's gallery is filled with information such as tasks done on a previous loop to enemies defeated and even an items collection list. Each gallery is filled with flavor text but withholds things such as item drops which are very important for the true ending, locations of certain enemies which is important if the rng prevents you from obtaining certain important items from completing character quests. Even characters spawn randomly in certain locations and this information would have been helpful if it stated location spawn points for said characters. -The shop: every loop you start off as an overpowered hero and slowly get weaker as the days go by. Every loop you gain max amount of gold but also lose all items from the previous loop. You cannot buy batches of items, you must buy each item on each loop over and over again ONE.AT.A.TIME. albeit as you get more familiar with the game certain items become less of a priority so this should pose much of a problem but a jrpg released on 2007 where games like chrono trigger and FF6 solved this long long ago, I cannot grasp what compelled them to overlook even small things like this. -No adjustment for voice volume. You can lower the SFX of the game, you can lower the music of the game, but the voices are not affected by any of these options. Small nitpick but still can be a problem(you can shut off the voices but I tend to enjoy voices on dubbed or original but this game I had to turn it off). I feel like I may be missing something but overall I enjoyed the game but I would not recommend this as there is a long list that would come way before Hero must die. Info missing from this game and the small fixes would make this quite enjoyable but as it is right now, I would say a solid NO if you tend to enjoy jrpgs.
This is a one-of-a-kind premise for a game, and they delivered on it! To be clear: this is a port of a 2016 PS Vita game, and you should expect the quality level of a budget/indie/PSVita-port. So as long as you go in with those expectations, you're in for an interesting, fresh perspective on the rpg genre! Highly recommended if you're curious about the premise.
[SPOILERS AHEAD] This game takes one of the best concepts for a game I have ever seen, runs it through the garbage disposal a few times, and then hands it back to you on a silver platter. I wanted so bad to like this game but there are so many issues with it. The biggest one is just really that despite having an incredibly cool concept its executes it in a pretty mediocre way and the main bulk of the game is actually just... waifuslop and generic rpg combat. I would have loved an in-depth exploration of what it would look like for the main protagonist to slowly wither away in a world taking place after his death and trying to solve his unresolved regrets. To a degree, that IS what the game is going for. Honestly though, I think the fact that the world changes each loop based on the previous loops hurts the game IMMENSELY. It would have been so much better executed if that weren't the case, and you (as the player/MC) learning new information about the world could change your own options (like a normal time loop plot). The requirement to do at least 3 loops (in a not-that-short game btw) in order to get the ending is a bit much. But, this gets WAY worse when you consider the fact that the game takes AT MINIMUM 3 LOOPS, but if you don't know exactly the right order of events to do (and I needed a guide, because some of the things [especially getting some of the items from random enemies like the earth dragon] is a bit ridiculous to find out on your own), the game's loop events RESET and you have to do it AGAIN from the start of a new two loops. The problem is, this is not well communicated to the player AT ALL! As a first-time player, you will be confused when the second loop has new quests for the characters you completed the story of last time, and then far more confused when on the third loop, they go back to their ORIGINAL quests! I was under the impression for far too long that the game was just on a two-cycle loop because of this, and didn't realize what I was SUPPOSED to be doing until reading a guide. Who designed that?? Learning a couple new pieces of info every two/three loop cycles (because some events are locked behind certain multi-loop quests) takes HOURS. I absolutely love time loop plots, but the way its executed here is not fun to play through or compelling narratively. I will admit, I did enjoy it for the first few loops, but after that it got grating. After all, party of my enjoyment of the game was the belief that it would at some point, ANY point, be subversive in its plot; which really never comes until the very end (and even then, its not a particularly inspired twist). The other major problem is that the game is really just waifuslop at its core. Most of what you do in the game is collecting women to join your party (there are only two guys - one you start with who is not a good party member, and another which is basically impossible to figure out how to get on your own without just lucking into it) and having them sit there and look pretty (and do your party damage while you get weaker over time, I guess). If a game has to be waifuslop then the "waifus" should at minimum have good characters, but this is one of the most one-note generic and upsetting isekai-esque fantasy casts I've seen (in a game) in a while. Don't even get me started on the character designs, either... The actual cool idea at the core of the game is practically put on the backburner for this part of the gameplay, which sucks. TL;DR: Amazing idea for a game, really terrible execution. I truly hope that someone makes a game someday that actually explores this idea, but does it well.
