The “game” aspect can be frustratingly shallow. Once the novelty of the search mechanic wears off, you’re essentially playing archivist, not investigator. Important clips can be buried behind guesswork. No satisfying gameplay loops—just trial and error with search terms. For all its innovation, the emotional payoff might’ve hit harder in a more linear, controlled medium—like, say, a film.

probably the best detective game I've played

The game really did a great job creeping me out, even without any jumpscare. Can't really explain what it is too. I recommend you to play this game at night. You'll get it. 8/10 (I know it's kinda glazing but i really like this game atmosphere, creepy even without anything to get scared off and the way the story's told through the video files we dig down make its kinda unique for me even how basic the gameplay is so if you wonder what its like you should give it a try while it on sale because the game was kinda short btw)

this game is boring

[h3]Truly a non-linear no-handholding detective game[/h3] I find it difficult to find a really satisfying detective / puzzle game. Usually it would be either too easy, where instead of YOU making choices and guesses, the character you control will spell out everything for you, and it would be rather "Press X to win". So, having a non-linear story where you can explore everything as you wish is not a very usual experience. OK, we have this non-linear gameplay. But another case is having a puzzle with obscure logic that YOU, the player, can not follow properly, and then because of the tiny missed piece you are stuck for hours or have to use guidelines and walkthroughs, and you feel either not smart enough, or dissatisfied with the designer's choices. But in case of "Her Story" there are no such problems and it hits the perfect spot. You just use your guesses, you use deduction and you just keep searching through the database. You are always having multiple ideas to check, some theories in mind. Even if you are wrong, you won't be stuck for hours. Instead, there would be just no results for a keyword and you can continue. The pace of the game is great. It took me three hours to complete the game and I never felt bored, tired, stuck, or even dissatisfied that this is "Too Short". The idea is simple, the mechanics are straightforward, so with the current length it does not get overly repetitive without a reason. As for this simple idea, I guess the execution was perfect.
