Hello Goodboy, developed by Rolling Glory Jam and published by indie.io, is a tender and emotionally rich narrative adventure that turns the afterlife into a realm of warmth, reflection, and compassion. The game follows the story of Iko, a boy who awakens in an unfamiliar world with no memories of his past, accompanied only by his loyal dog, Coco. From the very beginning, the tone is gentle and contemplative, inviting players into an experience that prioritizes empathy and human connection over action or competition. Rather than presenting the afterlife as something grim or foreboding, Hello Goodboy transforms it into a place of healing and discovery, where every act of kindness and every small choice carries weight. It is a game that understands the quiet power of emotion, and how meaningful it can be to simply listen, help, and care. The gameplay is structured around exploration and choice, presented through a series of interconnected regions that represent different emotional and spiritual states. As Iko and Coco journey through these lands, they encounter various souls who linger between life and death, each burdened by their own regrets or unfinished business. Through dialogue and interaction, the player helps these characters come to terms with their memories by performing tasks or using Iko’s ability to repair objects that hold sentimental value. Coco, meanwhile, adds both personality and function, sniffing out clues and guiding Iko toward those who need help most. There is no combat or traditional challenge; instead, the heart of the experience lies in the decisions you make about who to help and how to spend your limited time. Every action, no matter how small, becomes a reflection of your values and empathy. One of the game’s defining qualities is its aesthetic grace. The art style is soft and painterly, filled with soothing colors that create an atmosphere of calm and comfort. Each environment feels like a dream—lush forests tinged with autumn hues, cozy cabins bathed in golden light, and serene meadows dotted with glowing spirits. The animation of Iko and Coco is simple but expressive, perfectly capturing their bond through small gestures: the wag of a tail, a comforting pat on the head, or a shared moment of rest beside a fire. The soundtrack complements this beautifully, featuring gentle melodies and ambient tones that elevate the emotional weight of each encounter without overwhelming the experience. The result is a deeply immersive world that feels safe, introspective, and profoundly human, even as it exists in a realm beyond life itself. The narrative unfolds subtly, encouraging players to piece together Iko’s story through his interactions with others. As you progress, fragments of his past begin to surface, revealing the reasons he finds himself in this liminal space. Themes of forgiveness, acceptance, and second chances weave through every storyline, and the writing maintains a delicate balance between sorrow and hope. The pacing allows moments of silence to breathe—there are no forced emotional spikes or unnecessary melodrama, only quiet realizations that carry genuine impact. The multiple paths and endings offer room for replayability, as different choices can lead to varying resolutions, not just for Iko, but for the souls he aids. Yet, even with this variability, the game remains focused on its emotional core rather than complex branching systems. Despite its strengths, Hello Goodboy is not a game that will appeal to everyone. Its simplicity may disappoint players who crave mechanical depth or lengthy campaigns. There are no elaborate puzzles, no inventory systems, and no difficult challenges to overcome. The experience instead asks for emotional engagement—a willingness to slow down, to reflect, and to connect. For players attuned to that rhythm, the simplicity becomes a strength, allowing the story and atmosphere to take center stage without distraction. The limited time mechanic, where you can only help certain souls per playthrough, adds a bittersweet layer of tension, encouraging thoughtful decision-making and reinforcing the game’s central message about the fleeting nature of time and opportunity. On a technical level, Hello Goodboy runs smoothly and is designed to be accessible to a wide range of players. The interface is intuitive, the controls responsive, and the performance stable even on modest hardware. Full controller support and strong compatibility with handheld devices like the Steam Deck make it an easy game to pick up and relax with. Its modest system requirements and multilingual support reflect the developer’s inclusive design philosophy. In many ways, the game’s approachable nature mirrors its thematic spirit—it welcomes everyone to experience its story, regardless of skill level or background. Ultimately, Hello Goodboy stands as a heartfelt celebration of empathy, companionship, and healing. It doesn’t rely on spectacle or complexity to make an impact; its power lies in quiet moments—comforting a lost soul, mending something broken, or simply sharing a moment of peace with a loyal dog. Rolling Glory Jam has crafted a work that resonates deeply with anyone who has ever experienced loss or sought meaning in small acts of kindness. It reminds players that love and compassion can transcend even the boundaries of life and death, and that sometimes the simplest stories are the ones that stay with us the longest. Hello Goodboy may be short and gentle, but it leaves an emotional footprint far greater than its size suggests, offering a poignant and memorable journey that speaks to the heart. Rating: 8/10
its BEAUTIFUL game! i like this.
its very adorable and well made, super immersive. very much worth my time
Hello Goodboy has warm, cozy, and cute art, but overall the game felt a little too kiddie for me. I liked the visuals and atmosphere, but the gameplay and story just didn’t hold my attention very well, so the experience ended up feeling kinda boring and slow. I'm only recommending it because it would be a great game for a kid to play.
I got this game for cheap by getting it off a mystery key on a key shop. I had no idea what is was about, but as an achievement hunter I decided to play it. What caught me off guard was how amazing the story is, as someone who lost their brother and occasionally suffers from anxiety, I found this games story extremely comforting and brilliantly told. The characters were very well written, and even though it is a short game I feel that it has really touched me. Great job to the developers!
