Hell Breaker

Hell Breaker is a free to play VR Dungeon game with bHaptics Tactsuit support. It worked on my HTC Vive and Index system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok. I don't have the Tactsuit. You can still enjoy this short game without the Tactsuit. Hack and Shoot your way through a dungeon. Try it, for a quick run through a dungeon.

"Hell Breaker" is an advertisement/demo intended to spur sales in a VR gaming accessory from bHaptics Inc. Imagine spending five hundred bucks on a haptic lifejacket for VR gaming and having, well, this demo to play as a result. Judging by the peak player count in this advert, I'm guessing sales for their goofy lifejacket didn't go down so well... but that's besides the point. For the gamers on Steam, this is all about "Hell Breaker". More advert than game. What do you do in the game? As an advert/demo, there's not much here. You have 15 minutes, far longer than anyone would want to wear a TactSuit Pro (seriously don't laugh, that's what they call it, $500 by the way) for. Your mission: To get zapped by the haptic jacket as you pretend to be a wizard (and you would have to believe to some extent you are some kind of wizard if you spend $500 on haptic life vests for VR gaming). It's just a crappy VR shooter tech demo, at best. The game is really simple and unambitious in terms of implementation, more of a tech demo or one of those cases where an amateur developer spends $100 to publish something on Steam Direct to see if it's possible. Yes, obviously it's possible. A proof of concept, tech demo, or something that's less than a little blip on the radar isn't offering anything truly valuable to gamers. In terms of visuals, this features fairly low quality low poly 3D graphics which will deter a lot of gamers, understandably. Gaming is a visual medium, and while some developers struggle with creating high quality visuals, failing to do so is a disservice to gamers. It's very difficult to recommend bad looking games. It's VR exclusive, and that shows the developer failed to understand the most basic axiom of VR game design... if the only cool thing about your product is VR support, your product is not cool. This game is fairly dated at 7 years old... it's showing a bit of age and won't give you a very up-to-date gaming experience. As an advertisement, this is only free in the same way that adverts on Youtube and banner ads in your browser are. This is a game demo that's been dumped on Steam to advertise another Steam store page in the hopes of raking in some cash. Just because advertisements are free, doesn't mean they're worth your time. It's important to understand there's a formal process to create a demo/page for a game which hasn't been followed here: https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/store/application/demos While it might seem like an inocuous mistake, publishing demos and advertisements as if they are full games is misleading and in some ways harmful. This advertisement is taking up marketing space and visibility that would be better made available to a developer that's done the right thing and created a full game. Instead, that visibility is given over to a demo/advert that's been published incorrectly and is polluting the marketplace. It's unclear if this mistake was made through incompetence or a deliberate intent to mislead gamers. Often developers may choose to incorrectly publish demo/advertisements as separate games as a cheap way to bypass paying Valve for marketing presence on the Steam front page, which may seem clever to them, but it's harmful behaviour and it's not good for gamers. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 5 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Nope. This isn't worth downloading. There's no financial cost up-front, but you'd still be spending your time and a little hard drive space on a product that's far from the best. There's thousands of better alternatives on Steam. Buy a TactSuit Pro!

Игра 'Hell Breaker' - это адреналиновый коктейль из брутального экшена, стильной графики и динамичной музыки. С первых минут она захватывает в ураганный вихрь сражений с демонами самых разнообразных мастей. Управление, хоть и требует привыкания, интуитивно понятно и позволяет вытворять зрелищные комбо. Особенно хочется отметить визуальный стиль – неоновый нуар с элементами киберпанка выглядит невероятно круто. Сюжет, пусть и не отличается особой глубиной, подается в виде лаконичных брифингов и прекрасно задает тон происходящему. Прокачка оружия и способностей дает ощутимый прирост в боевой мощи, мотивируя к повторному прохождению уровней. Боссы представляют собой серьезное испытание, требуя от игрока не только реакции, но и тактического мышления. Единственный минус – некоторая однообразность локаций, но это с лихвой компенсируется интенсивным геймплеем. В целом, 'Hell Breaker' - отличный выбор для тех, кто ищет динамичный и зрелищный экшен, способный увлечь на несколько часов.
