«HARTS ISLAND»

Ben Lunato has a talent for making walking simulators with relatable narrative and intriguing visuals, I think he does it better than a lot of the $20 games in this genre, but the scale and technical limitations of those games are completely understandable. I played a couple of his indie games that generally work as short aesthetic experiences, and even though they may lack in content, they always have an emotional impact on me. I will say that I didn't enjoy this game as much, mainly because I found the environment a little hard on the eyes, often causing me to walk in circles and backtrack to previous locations, unsure where the next event was - not to mention getting stuck on invisible artefacts. If this was like a $10 game I would say it's probably not worth it, but luckily Ben prices his games dirt cheap, so I would recommend this strange journey if you enjoy a psychological experience. This game takes about an hour or so to complete, with some of the events being optional so you should fully explore the island to get the full experience. As far as the gameplay goes, you just walk up to different structures and listen to the monologue with occasional teleports for playable cutscenes. I love the voice acting in his games, I just find it very cool how resourceful some of these indie devs can get. The actual writing is really good, it's not meant to be hilarious but it always is, there is just something really funny about the insane roasting going on in Ben's games (loved that part with the 'shopping list' lol). However, this time around I didn't find the game visually striking as some of the previous titles, there were a few neat ideas with the animation, some of which could be missed if you looked the wrong way, but the black&white aesthetic did not work for me this time, I thought the last game you released was a lot more compelling in that regard.
Pros:
+ fun narrative - sad, hilarious and deep + admittedly homebrew voice acting, but you make it work + some cool psychological visuals to explore + not sure if that last song was made for the game, very beautiful
Feedback:
Hard on the eyes & Confusing Navigation - Personally, if I am playing a game in this genre, I am simply looking for that narrative and visual spectacle, I don't need or desire anything else, so when I find myself in a situation where I am trying to figure out where the next point of interest is, it doesn't add anything to the game aside from just ruining its pacing. Now don't get me wrong, it's perfectly fine to have some optional exploration but if you do that, I think you should remove any unnecessary areas, then you end up with players getting stuck in some holes trying to navigate. Also, if your walking simulator is not funnelled and perhaps confusing, sometimes people don't finish your games - those blurry effects that you use sometimes Ben to blind me, I still don't like them no matter what the context is. For example, I think if you just designed the Island with a bit more visual clarity I think it would make for a lot better game, maybe if you observed it from elevation and descended with clearly visible locations, as opposed to having a partially hidden path behind some rocks in blurry forest. Overall Thoughts: 6/10 I love indie devs that try to create a unique psychological experience, developers like Rail_Slave, Arkhouse and now Ben Lunato as well - with a particular talent for narrative. Frankly, I can easily see Ben making something like Firewatch or Virginia, his games have a story to tell just as compelling, but maybe they are less accessible and perhaps look gimmicky in comparison. I do think 'Beyond Crimson Stars' was significantly better paced and designed, and it had a lot more going on, so while I enjoyed this game, I don't think it was nearly as good as Ben is capable of. The visuals are great. The world is fascinating. I liked the style very much, it looks like everything I enjoy. Otherwise I was lost because the game kept teleporting me from one narrator monologue into another, which is not really a bad thing by itself, but the teleportation felt glitchy. Narrator's vocabulary (and personality) isn't anywhere near family-friendly, but he is voiced really well. But those monologues can easily be missed if you don't remain in the vicinity of the broadcaster for the duration of the speech. I mean... at first I didn't even understand that I was supposed to listen to them, that it was an actual story and not just a background noise. So I kind of tuned out. I don't think most walking games let you wander away from the plot like that. At some point I couldn't find where I was supposed to go next. That made me not finish the game. Generally I liked the experience and I will play it again.
A arte do jogo é única.

HARTS ISLAND is a Walking Simulator with an excellent visual style, some cool locales, and god-awful dialog that ruins the experience. I was initially pretty interested in what HARTS ISLAND would offer, as its cool visuals immediately had me engrossed and its surreal environments with floating skulls and giant bottled ships in the background offer something truly interesting to behold. The ambiance of the game is quite relaxing to wander around to and from each of the locations, taking in the sights in the stark black-and-white 'sketch' aesthetic. As you wander around you find recorded messages from the game's main speaker. Unfortunately, upon triggering these dialog sections the game's voice actor meanders on and on and on - peppering his lines of dialog with cursing aplenty and coming off more as listening to some pissed-off, completely smashed drunk friend rambling on and on incoherently about their woes. The game seems to be trying to make a statement about mental health, coping mechanisms (via alcohol- more explicitly during one section of the game with a bunch of bottle strewn about the environment) and the like, but sitting there listening to the diatribes the speaker often goes off on are about as appealing as listening to someone do this over a latenight phonecall in real life (not at all.) HARTS ISLAND for its very low pricepoint I figured I would give a whirl as far as an interactive art piece and while I did find some enjoyment out of it (the visuals have an amazing style to them and the overall layout of the world flows nicely) but the abrasive, frequent, and jarring dialog of the main speaker made me just want to turn the game off to frankly shut him up. For an example of the type of slurred, aggressive, overbearing line delivery you can expect check the trailer posted here on Steam from 2:04 - 2:24, but imagine that every 5 minutes or so in the game itself. Here's another example: "While you were having your ♥♥♥♥♥♥' Eggs Benedict and ♥♥♥♥♥♥' lightly-crisped ♥♥♥♥♥♥' bacon and your ♥♥♥♥♥♥' tea you ♥♥♥♥♥♥' ♥♥♥♥♥! ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ tacos!" If nothing else- the experience is memorable, I just wish this amazing art style was put toward a different experience. Having these cool visuals paired with such an abrasive, annoying speaker marred my enjoyment and I found it to be more obnoxious than anything.
Lunato might later prove to be a guy to go into textbooks on how to do interactive poetry. I couldn't care less for the unfortunate foul-mouthed actor the story hinges upon, but the way that story is delivered is simply stunning. Everything is in its place. All is dreamlike. Very good. Very-very-very good.
A bit self-entitled. Close, but no cigar.
I love me a good walking simulator. That ain't what you'll find here.
