It's winter break 1994 and schools out at Harthorn High School, but not all is silent in its empty classrooms and dark hallways...

Half a decade late to the game but I found this game to be very impressive, it was spooky, excellent atmosphere and setting, this game reminded me a lot of Condemned Criminal Origins without the violent homeless, the ambient music and the school reminded me of Condemned. Anyway very late review but I loved this game all the way through the slow build of dread and tension was spot on. Well done to devs.
Great game. So fun. They knew not to give me a gun from the jump because I would've boomed him the first time I saw him. Killer = straight to dvd. Killer stole the cop's underwear btw.
Harthorn is a short story-driven horror game taking place in a high school during winter break. You're playing as the new part-time security guard aided by a radio dispatcher, a setup somewhat similar to Firewatch in how the dialogue between the two plays out and how nothing our of the ordinary happens during the first couple chapters. Even though you can take your time to familiarize yourself with your surroundings, it's not necessary as there won't be any game of cat vs mouse where you have to be able to navigate efficiently, but the maps scattered around the school pointing out your current location are quite helpful either way. It doesn't take long until ♥♥♥♥ hits the fan and you have to do a bit of sneaking with an instant-death-adversary roaming about: luckily, these sections don't take too long and the AI isn't hyper sensitive to the point of being able to detect the player from the most impossible angles. Harthorn has been developed by the Canadian one-man-team Vincent Lade and it's his 4th commercial release on Steam, all of his projects being horror-themed with a high emphasis on atmosphere rather than jumpscares: this is also the first release to run without any technical drawbacks, at least on my end. There's really not much to say here: both voice actors are certainly no amateurs, the first half in particular is pretty creepy and it's just perfectly bite-sized in what it's trying to achieve. If you like it short & sweet, it's worth a playthrough.
Petty fun little horror game. It's not the most complex and doesn't have a lot of replay ability but it's fun to play two or three times

For 4 bucks, I'd say this thing is easily worth the 1-2 hours of quality playtime. The story and game play aren't that complex, and the AI is arguably a bit dumb and forgiving. That said, the story is compelling enough, the designs of the levels are actually pretty realistic and detailed, and at no point is it hard to figure out what to do next - just go from location to location in search of notes and items you need to progress. It's pretty simple overall, yet was still quite enjoyable. I think this is because it doesn't overstay its welcome.
This feels like a 2010 game released in 2020, and not in a good way. I always feel bad to give a solo dev game a bad review, but personally I can't recommend this game even for the low price. Here are my critiques: 1) it's incredibly linear, in the sense that you progress through very tiny portions of the map at a time, while other areas are momentarily closed off, so even in thos sections there's 0 exploration involved at any time; 2) it's badly optimized. I encountered something that rarely happens to me: during pretty much all my playthrough if I looked towards a certain direction I got between 95 and 105 fps, but if I did a 180 and looking in the opposite direction my fps collapsed to 30 fps; 3) there's an image in the store page that suggests the presence of some combat in the game and while this is technically not false, the only time you get to have a gun and shoot at something it's the very end of the game and the final boss goes down with exactly three shots, then the game ends; 4) it's extremely short, I finished the game with a 68 minutes playtime without ever rushing and reading all the notes I found. 5) a good plot is not something I desperately need to enjoy a game, especially in horror games but here it's really blend and pretty predictable, complete with the good old cliché consisting in a final cliffhanger hinting at a possible sequel (which will never come probably). It's not unplayable or unenjoyable, I've played worse games, but I also have played much better games, some even for free.
