This may be the most perfect modern take on the 8 bit side scroller. The level design is sound, the controls and enemy balance is fun, and most importantly, you have to start the ENTIRE game over if you lose all your lives. 8bit/10
Halloween Forever isn't going to blow your mind. But does it have to? Is there a rule out there that says every game HAS to be a paradigm shift? Actually, that feels unfair to Halloween Forever, because as far as games go, this character, this type of shooter, in this setting, IS actually pretty unique. It may lack the ambition of a retro-esque game like Shovel Knight, but it's still enjoyable. Halloween Forever is a short, simple, and charming little game about Halloween with 8-bit graphics and chiptune music. That's all it wants to be and it does its job well. It may be easy for some people to write this off as "just another cheap pixel art game," but it's obvious to see the love and attention it was given by the developer. Simple as it may be, this is a tough little game to finish, particularly because it doesn't save your progress -- a move that was done intentionally. It'll remember which secret characters you've unlocked, but as far as actually playing this game goes, it gives you no quarter. 1ups are scarce, death comes quickly, and there are no continues. Game Over means starting back at level 1. Shockingly, the game doesn't feel cheap for doing this. Halloween Forever isn't a game that feels mean, or like it's punishing you for being less than perfect. It just asks that you value every move you take, and play smart. If you could blow through the whole game on your first try, it'd probably take less than an hour, so a little bit of failure and overcoming the challenge is part of the fun. Observe, learn, and do better next time. There's no masochism here, just focus. There's plenty to do, too. Alternate routes and secret areas are plentiful (vital for getting things like the game's true ending), and a handful thoughtful achievements will push you to play the game in new, weird ways. For five bucks? Less, if it's on sale? You won't see many articles celebrating this as a masterclass in anything, but it's well worth the price.
This game was super fun for about 10 minutes, I really wish I could love it. The mechanics and graphics are all great, the only bummer is having to start the entire game over after dying 3 times - Too many "retro" themed games bring back this problem, and it's really just not fun anymore in 2017! pros: -great platforming -fantastic simple level design -great simple graphics -well done, fitting music -nostalgic fantasy story and setting -lots of health restoration items -etc etc cons: -arcade style permadeath -some slightly unbalanced enemy placements in places -some bs traps (leap of faith onto spikes) but usually not fatal Overall if you don't mind losing all progress from minor mistakes then it's really a great game. Wish I could love it!
Nintendo hard era platformer with holiday charm. I say Nintendo hard because if you die on a level you will restart that level. If you lose your lives, you restart the game. Although this game is best played around Halloween when you are in high spirits for such festivities this game is still a pretty fun game to experience. There are a few flaws which i would say prevent me from recommending at full price, but this game has enough charm that I'd say pick it up sometime when it's on a sale.
Pros
+Cute Halloween retro pixel style +Nintendo hard (if that is your thing) +Unlockable characters with different attacks and endings +Fun soundtrack befitting Halloween spirit +Fun for speed running
Cons
-Game can lose it's charm outside the Halloween season -Ladder sections can be annoying especially when paired with enemies and instant kill spikes -Nintendo hard (if that is not your thing) -Missed the potential to have a score for chasing score (especially with one heart mode) They added a 99 lives mode for players struggling to get through the game. This disables achievements which to me adds to the charm of the Nintendo hard mentality. For a real challenge you could try to see how far you can make it with one life mode. This is not be the best five dollar retro platformer game on steam but it sure does have its appeal. I would pick this up while it's on sale, but I can recommend it as a fun little title. I play this once a year, every year. It is my comfort skeleton pumpkin friend.
I love everything about this game. It's a bit difficult for an old lady, my hands are killing me but I'm trying because I want to see more of the game.
The appeal of Halloween Forever appears limited, being released on Halloween and being themed after the holiday itself. The stylistic choices disguise a masterfully-crafted platformer, however. The art style appears simple, but is amazingly detailed. It’s difficult, but not too difficult. It’s short, but the wealth of secrets and optional characters (all with different playstyles) will keep you coming back for more. Like the best NES platformers, Halloween Forever offers a really fun challenge that never overstays its welcome.
I like the art and the platforming, but it is really small and a bit overly retro-hard for its price tag. I wouldn't suggest this for anything over $5. Even then, you have to really want the content inside. It has potential, and it is cute and charming, but really small and unforgiving.
The gamer's rage is intense with this one, lmao. As much of a pain in the neck it was to start all the way at the beginning when you died, I had a hella fun time playing!
It's fine but the fact you have to finish it in one sitting and there's no level select is super annoying honestly.
