If there was an "in the middle" button for this review, I'd choose it. The game is pretty fun, but somehow the demo is still more fun than the early access. I guess this is because the EA is heavily experimental. Which is fine, but the game has some definite flaws. The dev team needs to decide between Half Sword being a full-realism medieval combat sim or a fun physics-based fighting game. Some of the "realism" makes me think the game is trying to emulate Getting Over It. - My character will drop his weapon at any slight hit to his hands, and will also drop it very often when switching hands. - Full plate armour is VERY effective. Which is extremely realistic. But, that doesn't add to the fun of the game. The demo got this right. It works, but in a "gamey" way. In the EA, I'll hit an enemy in the head directly with the head of my pollaxe 5-6 times, and the guy just gets up and it doesn't phase him. - Half-swording can sometimes cut your left hand. Which is realistic. Does it make the game any more fun? No. Does it make it almost impossible to use any sword against any enemy past man at arms unless you cheese it? Yes. There's a few other issues with realism, but I'd be getting into stupid little things that I'm sure will be fixed later on. There's a big issue with optimisation: - Looking outside of maps, there are MASSIVE mid to high-poly landscapes that will never be seen. Massive shells of buildings that are WAY too detailed, tiny little details, textures that are extremely high quality for absolutely no reason, objects that are barely seen by the player that are fully modelled from behind and on the inside, and so much more. I'm so confused as to why this is kept in. - Low quality settings are too high quality. I understand the argument of "buy a better PC", but there are plenty of people out here that love Half Sword, but can't properly play the game because their frames are capped at 15-20. It's not that hard to implement a feature where you can play the game in potato mode with minimum graphics. I've had to download two mods and lower the resolution scale to 33% just to play with 40+ fps. Overall, game just needs a lot of work. It's nowhere near release state. A decision needs to be made to turn the game into a realism simulator or a fun replayable game.
This game feels different than the demo. I feel like I've been handicapped while all the jank B.S. is still in play. 0/10 will not recommend the game. Don't waste your money.
I loved this game so much, even the demo, but these new updates made it unplayable. The most recent one made it so i can barely fistfight, which is the only thing i do. The previous ones made my bones break over nothing, soundtracks were messed up, people grab too much, and choking was too powerful. Also made the blood dynamics worse and dying immediately from an extremity wound. Ive lost the character i had for months due to a zombie biting through plate armor. The game was fine in its earlier versions, but the developers minds are all over the place. This game had so much potential.
A recent update spoiled the fun. Enemy swords can slice through my armor but my own swords might as well be twigs for all they do. My character stumbles around like he's drunk and falls over randomly. Swinging weapons is RNG on where it hits and sometimes the weapon seems to path over the enemies head for so reason.
its okay, too wobbly still. not a fan of some enemies randomly tanking 5000 hammer heads to the face, and some dropping dead to a light stick tapping onto their chest in full armor. stuff is just far too inconsistent.
♥♥♥♥ this ♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game it sucks its borderline unplayable with how ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ weak your dumbass mongoloid of a character is (and somehow a weak starving peasants punch knocks you the ♥♥♥♥ out like what??) balance your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game instead of adding 60 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ new armor sets nobody has asked for you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ idiots, play the free demo its much better
As of now I cant recommend this game at all. The fighting has gotten worse with every update, some weapons feels like poolnoodels with no real effect on enemies. The fighting in general feels very weird and its mostly AI grabbing you nonstop and weapons glitching arround. Speaking of AI sometimes you get fighters that fold just by looking at them and others fight like they've got rabbies not dying even if you hit their head multiple times. The game has huge potential to be something great but to me I would say its not worth it for now. (At least on the playing side of things, I would still buy it again for support) The bugs and the bad fighting take the fun out of it after a while of playing. Really hope some day this game can shine.
