This one really hurts. The concept is great, it handles well, there's a lot of content, and it has good graphics and presentation. But yeah... most the stuff you unlock is useless, and the whole trial and error process of finding what works is more boring than fun. If you have a shoddy main weapon that doesn't work well with the boss you're fighting, you're just floating around for what feels like forever trying to land a hit. I want to recommend this game because a lot of love and work went into it and I think if done just a little bit better this could be a good game (I am still hopeful for the sequel and will give it a go someday). Unfortunately, I can't tell you to play this knowing that it just isn't really any fun.
I love Shmups, i love roguelikes / survivor style games. Gunlocked sound like it's tailor made for my tastes but no matter how much i tried, it just doesn't click for me. It's biggest issue are its weapon designs. The vast majority of weapon types are just cumbersome to actually use. They're extremely restrictive, feel woefully underpowered and due to their often awkward shooting intervals / cooldowns are rarely available when you actually need them. There are some item synergies that have a very similar issue. They all sound fun and creative in theory, but rarely actually shine. Its boss designs are genuinely terrible. They're not difficult and just simply annoying to fight. With long periods of invulnerability and the ability to teleport randomly, actually hitting them with any of your awkward weapons boils down to being a waiting game more than anything else. It never feels like a satisfying Shmup nor does it scratch the survivor-like "power fantasy" itch. With everything feeling underpowered and cumbersome to use, the game becomes more of a chore to play.
# Beaten all levels (on easier, which i would recommend starting on) - Around 10 Hours If vampire survivors was a vertical shm'up. It is hard. It is fun. I recommend it.
Pros: Incredibly, only 28mb(!!!) guy really knows how to optimize a binary. A+. Any other developer, this would have been a 1.2gb monstsroisity. Somehow this guy figured it out. So kudos on that. Game is alright, being a shmup the game keeps coming at you and after three runs still unclear what a lot of these weapons do
Well recommended. A lot of fun guaranteed in this shmup with permanent upgrade mechanics.
Vampire Survivors, but it's a vertical shooter. Tight gameplay, decent hitboxes, well balanced difficulty, reasonable achievements, good weapon synergies / build potential, nice retro feel. Plays very well on Steam Deck, although keyboard is still preferable for maximum precision. Addictive and fun. Make sure to get the DLC.
Very arcade style, many choices while playing, cool upgrade system, fun game. Dev knew exactly what he was doing, to get that coin-up era feeling. Like missiles strafing sideways, and other tech-no-logical "good old days" oddities. Oh... as I'm writing this, I'm seeing on Steam background "FEATURED: Gunlocked 2 Has Launched" -- Ahhh FFS! ^^;;
perfect steamdeck survivor. has auto aim/ auto fire. ill probably blow through stop signs tomorrow on the way to work because im so happy!
This game is a hiddem gem and especially fun on Steam Deck. The interesting feature of it is the fact that you don't actively shoot but you pick up upgrades and weapons that do the job automatically. This doesn't mean that it's easy, though, but it's perfectly balanced, very rewarding and I love the pixel-art.
