I've completed the first two worlds at the time of writing this review, the game is pretty solid, especially for its price. Whenever I end my sessions i find myself wanting to come back for more rather quickly. The music and feel are the game is pretty fire too.
Great graphics and animation, smooth gameplay and lots of variety in mission types. It's a bargain, too. I'm ♥♥♥♥♥ at it.
Very fun and cute. The silhouette aesthetic is incredibly creative with the creature designs and environments. With a slightly isolated but cozy and hopeful post apocalypse feel, being surrounded by water and rubble for most of the game contributes to this. The gameplay while very fun and replayable with good controls and fun upgrades kinda becomes a bit repetitive due to the length of the game. There is variety to missions but not enough to prevent the game from losing some steam towards the end. The last few missions also feel somewhat mindless, perhaps due to having all upgrades, but they just felt like gauntlets exactly like you saw for the whole rest of the game. In world 4 you also get access to a ghost ability that essentially denies any need to think about using the rocket or submarine ability for the rest of the game. As the ghost can swim and fly just as well if not better, but also has complete invincibility. That felt like an odd choice. Perhaps a choice intended for dread mode but it can be used in normal anyway. Having abilities unlocked only for dread mode also feel odd, and I wish you had the choice to use them on normal after beating the game for fun as well. I also should commend for the small amount of story there is in the game the character of Yeti is very cute and charming, very likeable so wanting to help him comes natural. As well being friends with an aquatic creature is a fun concept for a game that takes place only in water surface. I like the small hints of old human ruins underwater implying everything was flooded. I had somewhat hoped there would be a little bit more story events than there were because I was enjoying the plight of Yeti trying to make the best of this apocalyptic world for his son, which goes almost unmentioned after the first boss event, Besides the complaint of length, some slowdowns and some odd choices it's a very fun and fair bullet hell. Overall a game I was glad to pick up.
Flashy, unique, incredibly polished and content packed, truly stands out among the games i've played in the past several years. Granted platformer, twin-stick, and arcade are my favourite genres so Gunboat God has been the easiest sell of my life. The diligence and dedication of the developer really shines through in the game. It's comprised of several worlds of short 1-2 minute long levels that feel good to play on and off. Some levels may feel frustrating to flawless but they are all bite-sized enough that I personally still enjoy it. The silhouetted graphics and the unpredictability of the water demands a lot of attention from the player to track... I'd be pretty happy to take the time to develop a gamesense for it but I imagine it could be exhausting for some others. The mental multitasking of moving, dodging and shooting reminds me a bit of the same skills you'd need for Cuphead.
Art style is radical. Giving the best memories of flash games but polished to a bright shine. I'm fairly early in the game, but I could see this being a delightful game I come back to. Plus the gator is friend.
Отличная игра. Рекомендую
Very fun, at the time of writing this review the strongest aspects for me are the graphics (great character design, very fluid and lively animations, especially on the crocodile, the mostly black aesthetic reminds me of Downwell and Patapon) and gameplay (I just find high-score games like this fun to replay :D)
Fun! Amazing animation, really smooth gameplay. We used to get games similar to this during the shareware and flash eras, now they are kind of forgotten. Glad to have this gem.
A GAME SO GOOD I ALMOST FELT GUILTY FOR PLAYING IT, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY IT MADE ME REALLY HAPPY
I found gunboat god during steam next fest, I was downloading demos and streaming them to friends, this game caught my eye and my friend said he'd heard of it, thought I would REALLY like it. Not only was he right, but its rare that after the first 3 stages of a DEMO am I so onboard with a game so much so I didn't need to play it until it released to know if not just liked it but LOVED IT. Despite that I polished off the demo anyways and adored every second of it... Gunboat god certainly reminds me of other games I've played, mainly LUFTRAUSERS and PATAPON with its gameplay and art style respectively but I feel the sentiment of "despite that its like nothing I've played before" is really a testament to the confidence in this games execution and intentionality in all aspects of its design, because this game is stellar at both of those things across the board, its truly inspired work here. Stages will repeat the same overarching objective yet the game never once felt stagnant, always pushing its stage layouts, its enemies, the ways it plays with mechanics or simply testing the players execution. The visuals are gorgeous, I personally am a sucker for solid black characters and so this was beyond up my alley, but when paired with those gorgeous coloured backgrounds and the usage of white to highlight not only submerged characters, to bosses, but even small things like anchoring the gunboat visually, despite the chaos the game brings, by outlining the gun in white at all times with a little symbol at its centre, paired with those striking red bullets it ensures that you're never lost in the chaos. The game feels like it has a monolithic of stages yet its such a lean experience from start to end, its expansive upgrade system, smattering of abilities, generous arsenal of unlockable guns and so much more make the experience feel jam packed yet the game never dwells on this, it doesn't flaunt its quantity of content or beautiful visuals to keep you around, it purely concerns itself with showing you a good time and not slacking in doing so. One idea after the next, never letting up but also juicing everything for all its worth, all whilst giving you the freedom in engaging how you wish, that smorgasbord of unlockable guns and abilities?? the game never really forces you to use one or the other, letting you decide how you want to tackle the obstacles ahead, yet nudges you enough that you really do want to try and experiment, its small but just adds to how freeing this game feels. Its also much appreciated how compelling the characters and world was despite its simplicity. For the type of game it is, dialogue could have been entirely absent, but paired with a very unique journey and an infectiously charming partner character with Yeti who supplies most of said dialogue, gunboat god strikes the fine balance in endearing you to its characters and world, without forcing it down your throat, opting to keep it brisk and casual, it actually got a couple chuckles out of me and now that I've beaten the main campaign I'm a little sad to see it go in a sense. The only "negatives" I can really give this game, is that on certain later stages the
ghost power up
feels like an easier alternative to using the
rocket
, but even feels like it wasn't at least considered, because I still had great time. The other thing is that I felt that the final stages of the penultimate world and the final world felt very similar in difficulty and weren't as hard as I anticipated, but once again... that's not a let down with this game, because it was still fun. And the game certainly has tough stages, the bosses (a major highlight btw) certainly had several retries, failure is addicting in this game yet winning never felt like it wasn't earned... I'm really looking forward to cracking open Dread mode, the game really did frame it like that's when the game truly begins and its just another star in the sky of shining reminders that the lovely people who made this game really had a vision, weren't compromising in anything they did, had the passion and love to see it through and were just here to make something they truly wanted to and share that fun with the world. It oozes sincerity and with a lot of games that feel such a need to pander, gun boat god almost feels like it pushes back against that notion, a voice, an artist shared what THEY wanted to share with us. Sensational game and a new favourite of all time for sure.
