4 characters to romance (3 male, 1 female)
LIES!!! Misleading, bullsh*t lies! Negative a THOUSAND points for a false female romance route. Nothing but a bunch of homoeroticism. No kissing. No declarations of romantic feelings. No sex. Just a bunch of teasing and no satisfaction. On the guys’ routes? Well-written romance/lust scenes. Queer women are really sick of this kind of bullsh*t. Don’t half-a$$ queer romance routes. Like, wtf was even the point if you’re not going to give it the same effort as the other routes? Other Complaints • Occasional awkward art illustrations. For the most part, I did like the CGs, but sometimes they can be a bit off. • Convoluted story. Lots of things don’t make sense or are poorly explained. Lots of unanswered questions. • Everyone is pale af. Takes place in Japan. I don’t know how many times I have to say this, but not everyone in Japan is pale. Far from it. The story has a pair of red-heads too. Instead of throwing red hair in, they could’ve actually put some kind of diversity in there. Redeeming Qualities • The romance/lust scenes are really good and thrilling (for the male characters). • All of the LIs (and the false LI) are interesting. Doesn’t happen often for me. Usually, I’m uninterested in at least one LI in most games, but all “four” LIs in this story caught my attention in some way. • The amount of CGs is surprising. As I said in my complaints, there are some instances of awkward art, but a lot of the CGs are still good. • I got a decent amount of laughs. The characters have really amusing reactions to things sometimes. In truth, I didn’t hate it. If it weren’t for the deceit regarding the female romance route, I’d have been leaning more toward a neutral review given as a positive one. However, as a queer woman who is super tired of people holding back on giving queer characters and their romances the same detail and effort as their hetero characters, I can’t in good conscience give this a good review.
Overview
It is a time of peace.. perhaps, but certainly not tranquillity. Our MC, Miyuri, is the heiress of Bakuto clan, an ancient order which follows the traditions of martial arts, but is ultimately a peaceful organisation. However, neighbouring Tekiya clan is much more aggressive, and the two have endured an edgy relationship, at best, since the last war between them. Miyuri has inherited a special power, the power of Creation, which she has negligible control over, and little understanding of. Yet, Tekiya clan is not the biggest problem that she faces. Over the course of many centuries, there have been repeated visits to her reality by a mysterious “phantom”, which appears to be hell-bent on destroying the world, and everybody in it. For good measure, this phantom is attracted by the holder (or “vessel”) of the power of Creation, and is able to use this vessel as a kind of homing device in order to make its returns. The Phantom had given its power to humanity many centuries earlier, and now wants it back. But there is a further problem: the power it wants comprises both Creation AND Destruction. And wouldn't you know it? The power has been split between two vessels, and the vessel of the power of Destruction happens to be the heir of the “enemy” Tekiya clan. Previous attempts to save humanity have always resulted in the death of the vessel of Creation. In an attempt to prevent a repeat of past failures, Miyuri is matched for marriage with the Tekiya clan heir, Tamaki; in the hope that their child will merge the powers and be able to sate the unending desire of the deadly Phantom.
Graphics
Anyone who played Absolute Alchemical Potion (review here: https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198889833430/recommended/1272860/ ) will be familiar with the large anime sprites with various expressions and animated, blinking eyes. The standard has been maintained, but the quantity greatly increased. Backgrounds are once again delightful, many with lots of little details to hold your interest beyond a quick glance; but it is the sheer number of CGs which is likely to leave you stunned. Collectors are in for a field day. I won't spoil it here, but there are LOADS, in addition to a generous sprinkling of very cute chibis.
Sound
Right from the lively attention-grabbing tune accompanying the menu, I was won over. There are a few tunes to keep you entertained as you progress through the story, and they fit the narrative well. That they caught my ear is an endorsement, as often I don't really notice the background music unless it really stands out.
Presentation, U/I, QoL
The game has two styles of narration. The whole thing is in first person, (which makes it easier to self-insert if you prefer, although a strong main character personality lessens the desirability of doing so); with the main story being in simple present tense (“I see you”, etc); this switching to present continuous (“I am seeing you”, etc) during several dream sequences. This may sound odd, but it works, and if you do return straight into a dream sequence after a break, this style also helps to make it immediately obvious of Miyuri's situation at that moment. Little touches affecting quality of life within a visual novel are often something that is overlooked, due to the minimal controls nature of the genre. However, that is not the case here. Perhaps the first thing to note is that the save/load function in this game is of the more familiar several-slots-per-screen nature that we are all most accustomed to. Not as attractive as the scrolling list we had in AAP, but certainly much more player friendly. There is a back button, which also works with the mouse scroll wheel (or two fingers sliding on the trackpad if you play mouse-free on a laptop like me), and you can back-step quite some way, including going beyond any decisions previously made. Although the quick-access menu disappears from on-screen when you're at a decision point, there is also a pause menu, instantly accessible by pressing the escape key, through which you can save your progress on the decision screen if you wish. A nice touch which I particularly appreciated. You can also quit the game instantly from here, without having to navigate through several screens via the main menu, which seems to be the standard exit method in many other VNs. If you leave the game for some time and can't remember where you had got to when you return to it, not only do the save slots give you a picture of the screen where you saved at along with the date and time, but also provide a scene heading from whereabouts in the story you were. I found this very useful after all the times I have returned to a save from elsewhere in other games, with no real idea of where it was from. The quick access menu for the majority of the story has been moved to the right hand border, getting it away from the bottom of the screen, and it looks quite attractive, but I still found the buttons to be a little uncomfortably close to one another. This is a difficult one, as making it too big would interfere with the display, while too small gives click-accuracy issues. Each option does light up when hovering the pointer over it, which helps; though I'm not sure what the best solution to this particular issue is. Other regular features are also present, including auto (which I confess to not having used), and skip, which is fast and accurate. If you want to win one of the love interests, there is a handy “sympathy” (affection) icon which you can click on and it will open a new box showing how each of the possibilities feels about Miyuri. Using this in combination with the save option should make it straightforward to get the route you want to go on at the first time of asking. There are separate galleries for both (the huge number of) CGs and chibis, a page to access the available tunes, and another to show which endings you have found so far.
Verdict
The game features four love interests, 3M and 1F, none of whom you are forced into romantic entanglements with if you don't want to, although taking all five options within different play throughs will give you a chance of different good endings. There is only one bad end, which isn't depressing, and doesn't cause an abrupt finish. This is the second visual novel from Lotos Project that I have seen, and there is a clear pattern. In addition to the very generous graphic content, we get a strong, well constructed plot, a sensible number of player choices which gives some control over story direction whilst allowing plenty of time for development in between them, and light romance which is optional. There are an awful lot of great indie titles which slip completely under the radar through not having big name marketing behind them. To ensure we continue to enjoy a wide variety of quality otomes, we need to support the smaller developers, and this is undoubtedly one that is wholly deserving of your attention. Disclosure: I proofread this game script for accuracy and narrative flow in English, and can honestly say that having been presented with a work of this level of depth and interest; it has been a privilege to do so. Guardian of the Future is that type of a VN I really enjoy playing: lighthearted, pretty art, appealing love options... Quite often I just want some typical otome games with obvious outcome, easily achievable romantic happy endings, especially with available guides. That's not that kind of a game that left an unforgettable impression, or something I'm gonna contemplate about after I finish it. But it mustn't be this way. Just relaxing experience for a couple of evenings (don't pay attention to my 'hours on record', the game was just always idly launched on my computer). Welp, I guess I'll start with positive things: +MC is great! That happens quite rarely when I can enjoy female MC. Even if she is portrayed strong-willed, it usually happens thanks to weak male characters in the contrast. Here, it's not the case. I was quite fond of her. Unfortunately, you can't name MC but it didn't prevent me from self-inserting. Practically all the choices we've made felt natural and relatable. In her confrontation with the Phantom she seemed so powerful, I had goosebumps. That's the reason enough to review the game positively. +plot. I've started to appreciate otome stories created not simply for the sake of pursuing handsome love interests but for something more meaningful & deep. Romance happens just in the background of the main story-line. You're busy saving the world tho it doesn't totally interfere with your flirting & love interaction. The main focus remains on a captivating story. I loved it. It's always especially exciting to read about unique world order. That's fascinating to be able to dive into differently created realities. Writing was immersive, I was tearing up at touching moments, chuckling at funny scenes, admiring cute episodes &...some text descriptions with visuals were really turning me on. +Love options are attractive without exceptions. Even one female option (which I always dislike in otome, sorry) was quite nice & worthy of falling in love. Having started the game, I kept changing my mind who to choose first. So, unsurprisingly my first ending was neutral. All the options are alluring, with their distinguish characters. What else do you actually want from an otome game? :) https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2659712930 +Art. In VNs after enthralling stories, the second important thing is beautiful art. 104 CGs, including chibi images is undoubtedly an awesome feature. All the chars are appealing, they look unique, able to satisfy different tastes in appearance. Usually it's just a couple of routes I really long for & other options I just finish for completionist's sake. This game is ideal in this regard. Seriously, all the flaws I'm gonna describe below aren't that important in comparison. For me the main purpose of otome romantic VNs is just to provide a relaxing experience after a tedious working day. This game fulfilled its purpose perfectly, that's it. Thanks. Create one more, please :) +I have a special place in my heart for well-written, appealing villains, despite all their attractiveness, of course, they must remain bad guys and look exceptionally gorgeous. That's what I got here. THANKS! +Lots of choices and even more than enough save slots to be able to save before every important decision in every route. <3 +Very decent English localization. The game is created by my native Russian devs, I didn't play the game in Russian but judging by the screenshots I saw, the quality of the text is very good in both languages. Right now I'm excitedly preparing for Proficiency English exam. In between playing the game I was reading some linguistic articles in English and came across 0 new words but this game enlarged my vocabulary with some interesting C2 words (the highest level according to CEFR). Totally didn't expect that from an otome game, but the list of C2 words is surprisingly impressive. I'm grateful. +lots of achs \o/. There're 3 steam guides for all male chars and the link in the discussion for the full walkthrough. Let me whinge a little bit at the end: –typos and mistakes. Translation is fine but it still needs some editing. Tho devs promised to fix the issues in the next update, feels good that they care. –art. It was cute & adorable & enjoyable for my eyes until it wasn't... Honestly, it took me some days to get used to unnaturally sharp and long chins. Why? I looked at my own reflection in the mirror, paid special attention to ppl around me, I've never seen such faces. Then I actually thought maybe the chars aren't real ppl, it's some alternative world with its own creation rules, so everyone just looks differently. That thought calmed me down a little but and chars' faces stopped being so distractive, I mean I seriously couldn't focus on the story first or feel any romantic tension looking at some juicy CGs, I was just drawn to their chins all the time. And there was that СG where for the first time I saw my MC with her love option naked but...his body, it was almost twice shorter, his form was so unnatural. I spent more than enough time comparing it to MC's body, calculating their proportions thinking maybe I'm wrong but... That's actually, amazing how art in the game can be both a wonderful and jarring feature. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2672177298 –plot is engaging and all but it still had some inconsistencies. For example, in my first playthrough MC didn't ask the siblings about their clan traditions but later it was said as if they "didn't want" to tell her anything. What especially felt off when after her official agreement to that marriage, doesn't matter that it was of convenience first, her fiancé was under the same roof, why was she engaging herself so freely with others, I kept waiting when she could talk honestly with poor Tamaki, especially when they seemed to become close enough to be called at least friends. That felt wrong and unfair. –I guess my main complaint is abrupt endings. Once I literally flinched when the story unexpectedly ended. I was waiting maybe for some final scene/summary... What was even the purpose of showing those additional scenes?! MC reached her happy ending, what was that after? I mean the idea is nice but... For example, "Why were you looking for me?" asks the char and... that's all. Wasn't the world actually saved? Was it some swift apocalypses? Was the world really absorbed by higher powers? Honestly, it felt like mockery, no closure. And I should say, I actually enjoy open endings when I have to continue that creative process of the story-building myself taking over from the writer. But...it's definitely not the case here. That's truly sad. A well-written ending is what leaves the final aftertaste, creates the final mood about the whole game. I wish it was presented differently. That's a real fly in the ointment. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2672899358 –I wish the gallery was organized differently. I prefer to see CGs grouped around the specific char, not the moment in the plot. I prefer reliving the story with one love option while visiting the gallery and then switch to another version of the plot, experienced with a different char. In this case it's just some mess. --I found it annoying that when the text was appearing in the dialog box it was underlined with some short black lines, they disappeared soon but it was distracting as hell. I even set the text speed at max, tho it's not what I prefer but it still didn't help. So, it's the 2nd visual novel created by this dev which I played and enjoyed. Nice, relaxing, light but not shallow experience. Thank you and good luck with your next projects!
This SUPREMELY EXTREMELY NEUTRAL review will be simple and to the point. I don't want this to turn into an essay of a college level that can get into the most prestigious academy of great and talented writers. What I SUPER liked: The "Guardian" by "GentlePunk" soundtrack. It is epic. It's amazing. I think I heard it the most as it is in the menu and it helped me take the necessary breaks. Kudos, kudos and more kudos to ya! What I liked: The artwork/CGs -> Especially the delicious ICE CREAM! The lewd scene! The one and only! It was surprising that it was actually in there! (Don't worry it isn't arousing... I mean it's not 18+) Yoshiro's look. Kinda. His body was the only one of the guys that seemed to have the correct proportions. He is also the only one with the CG of a crossbow... If only he pointed it more to the right and fired... Sigh. What I dislike: MC and Grandma. I first hated Yuki too, until I realized she would be better suited to be the heroine. The MC (to me) comes off a self-centered/ narcissistic / uncaring person who orders... EVEN THE HEIR OF ANOTHER CLAN to do things for her! EVERYONE is a servant for her! She doesn't care about the others and "sometimes" might feel something, but yet she wants to "sacrifice herself"? She doesn't know how to have fun and she doesn't even enjoy MALE BODIES!? They do have a reason for it, but a funny reaction / response is mandatory in that scene! Grandma is a Clairvoyant who can't see what she really needs to see and I dislike her for PUNISHING men for something she could've perceived SOONER. OH HERE: THE MEN are REALLY DISLIKED in this universe! If you are a guy: you are to be used, abused, mistreated, slapped the sheet out of for ACTING upon your NATURE, which the MC INITIATED FIRST and then they will be berated and EVERYTHING IS THEIR FAULT! Woman do wrong? Oh lemme see... "Honey, you stay inside the house. No go out." ARE YOU KIDDING? SHE NEVER goes out or has fun! What a punishment... A "tiny tap on a wrist"! Also, the men aren't allowed to be STRONGER than the MC or BETTER than her. She does everything GREATER than any of them, because there is no one LIKE HER. There is also a part where Arashi kisses the MC because she asked for it. He was hesitant, but she is like "I am gonna walk away if you don't do it." He does WHAT SHE ASKED. Then SHE is the one all over him. He pulls away, she KEEPS GOING. Realizing he stopped... SHE SLAPS HIM. TWICE. Then she promises to continuously slap him IF HE DOES IT AGAIN. She never does and NEVER SLAPS ANYONE ELSE. Tamaki is a robot. Literally. I don't hate him... I just dislike men with no emotions. Yoshiro's attitude towards the "mistress". This is completely "mistress and my servant" p*rn. He does whatever she wants and faces constant abuse from her and everyone else. That's right. EVERYONE abuses this guy. EVERYONE. So you know who he chooses in the end? His beloved sister? The one he swore to protect? NO! BEING ABUSED IS MORE IMPORTANT! Gotta get verbally abused some more and bow to "my mistress"! ARGH! Listen, if you are way younger, like a teenager? YOU MAY enjoy this. (Probably) Adults... If you can shut off your mind for just a few minutes... Maybe. If you are a lonely adult or are into hating men/ abusing them... You will probably like this... I don't know... This was WAY not for me. Granted she "gets a bit better" in the end... Everything that happened prior overshadows it and I derived no pleasure from wishing to throttle... *clears throat*. Let's leave it at that. If you like it: GREAT. Good for you. You can't expect everyone to like it. GENTLEPUNK'S GUARDIAN MUSIC IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!
I cannot recommend the game. I know that a lot of work went into Guardian of the Future. One can really see that, for example, through the different Character Sprites in pose and outfits. However, once I started the game - I was often left confused. Some part of it got better over time, some not. Once I finished the game, all I could say about it was: WTF did I just read? Pro: - Many CG's - Chibi Art Gallery - Character Sprites have different Pose and Outfits - Female LI as an option Neutral: - Music (some pieces are very good, others not. But that's just my taste) - CG Gallery is not sorted per Character Con: - Game UI (Sometimes the usual UI change so that the buttons on the side switch to the bottom - the Text will move further down as well) - Translation (Just to be fair: You can totally understand what is meant, and it's way better than a MTL - however the words that are chosen are sometimes really strange and off-putting) - Character Art / CG Art does not always match the text ( There are quite a few cases where the character would look at MC gentle and.. In the CG or Sprite it is quite the opposite e.g. angry, disgusted) - Rough Start ( A good deal of stuff happens all at once, and only further in the game you get an understanding what exactly was happening in the beginning) - Synonyms (There are synonyms for a character everywhere. It really disturbed the reading at some point.) - Epilogues are... left open for another Story? I don't know Honestly, I really tried to like the game. At some point, I only finished every possible route in the hopes of liking the game and giving it a fair review. But.. I just cannot recommend the game. If you must try it, please download the demo first and see if the Cons I mentioned are fine with you.
Guardian of the Future seems like a promising visual novel, however, it is not a game I can recommend. I played this game for a little over two hours, however, I was not able to get into it. While the premise of the story is interesting, the game falls short when it comes to the delivery and storytelling. It did not keep me interested enough to continue. Adding on to that, the game was originally translated from Russian to English which makes for some strange language use that could put players off with expressions that may make sense in the original language, however, do not translate well to English. Pros: - Good Art - Lots of CG - Interesting Story Concept Neutral: - Music Cons: - Writing (not always clear or cohesive) - Translation (strange expressions) - Conflicting text and character sprites (e.g. character is described as sighing however an angry sprite is shown.) On a positive note, there is a demo available and I would definitely recommend that everyone try it out before purchasing the game.
Definitely would recommend as worth playing and the price asked (paid full price). It was a fun game overall. The first play-through takes longer depending on your reading speed, a couple of hours or so, but after that, using Skip can help ff through to unread parts depending on choices. For this reason, I think it had good value for replay. + Good world building + Interesting characters + Variety of viewpoints into story from different choices made + Plenty of CGs, chibis, music and art + Mechanics worked + Physical intimacy levels varied by character route for authenticity + Liked seeing the potential for a sequel starter in the happy ending epilogues - Endings for LI tagged on as epilogues to neutral ending with another epilogue/afterword after that; kind of confusing transition plot-wise - Plot gaps - there weren't a lot but the ones that are there just bugged me and made me wish I could edit in a reason or ask for an explanation or a rewrite but this is pretty common in fantasy otome games - Although there's technically 4 LI routes (3B, 1G), one route gets shorted in any display of intimacy - For an otome game that women would play, there was a lot of emphasis in the graphics of nude women; pretty, yes, but not really a focus on the female eye - if you're playing for a yuri route, then this might be + instead - Romance felt light in this game for an otome; plot gave reasons why two of the LIs would feel either an emotional or physical/body-chemistry pull to the MC but even those weren't developed or fully explored in the story and left me feeling like it was unresolved --To be clear...there's some typical otome romance interactions, little steam/skin but definitely more than compared to high school angst-filled games, but you'll have to use your own imagination to backfill the deeper connections going on. Let's just say, I wasn't convinced any of the LIs really loved the MC but I wanted to be convinced because I liked them; just wasn't sure they "got" her all the way (Tamaki was definitely the closest though, for me anyway - the episode at the amusement park was the best scene at showing he understood her needs and cared for her from the coin flip to the bench, loved it).
IDK What I Read But..
This visual novel is a blend of (Imo) love craftian elements, a dash of humor, cute chibi art and sort of doesn't make sense in most of the story. Play it if its your cup of tea, my mind is to not recommend tbh but I feel it's not that super bad also. So it's a bit conflicting oh well. I loved the music and the character sprites above anything. You follow the life of a heiress in Bakuto clan some sort of a Japanese mafia gang from the old times. There are a few other factions to which the Bakuto clan has feuds with. Then out of nowhere you realise the heroine has powers which I don't really see the origin from. It seems to be related to a phantom, a love craftian based monster which seems very powerful. The story is literally about uniting with the other factions and saving the world from this monster. Compared to many love craftian entities, the monster however is not that aggressive or evil and is negotiable I noticed. But I really don't feel the logic behind it. I know in love craftian stories things are a bit messy in general, but I understood naught. The story is also shoujo ai friendly but nothing major happens. The characters are okay, the male leads are one of a kind and I felt unique from each other and has a complete different role with saving the world with the heroine. I liked Tamaki a lot and his route is very cute. I think a character being a low class servants (game classifies this) to one of the potential leads and then still being another potential lead is interesting. For the gameplay I would say reaching an ending is insanely difficult especially in the climax scenario nearing the ending, The gameplay is bug-free however and the fast forward button is very fast lol. I don't understand how the options made any logical sense whatsover, most of the time I had to refer guides to get to a good route? Maybe it's just me. The art was nice, i think the backgrounds were pretty good too. I thought the chibi sprites were very cute. The menu screen is what I have a bit of complaint about, when i first launched the game I thought the game was glitching and not part of the art lmao. The music is very good, I did not like the theme at the menu screen on headphones it's a bit loud and energetic, but it's to preference.
