Groov is a frenetic dual-stick shooter that makes you the conductor of an intergalactic jazz fusion orchestra. Every action in Groov has a musical reaction, and with three unique modes, randomized music, and powerups that slow down the song (and your enemies), no two playthroughs are ever alike!

I was a big fan of this game when it was on the Xbox indy scene. Was sad to see it go, but so thankful Julian got to bring it back to life! It just a fun game. You can love the intensity of a twin stick shooter and you can love the amazing music each type of enemy has with it. The huge green ships are my favorite! All the notes together are in your control and make such an amazing soundtrack. Its fun and real easy to sit back and play for a few hours and enjoy the Groov!
I played this game as a young teen, it was very cheap and I had little money, for years I was hoping for a PC release as it was an Xbox Indie Game it was lost to the void. In response to a years old comment (on a very old video by a small youtuber) saying that I missed the game dearly the developer informed me that it was now on steam, still extremely cheap. I bought it instantly and it still hold up really well, it is very relaxing and has three game modes, in all of them every action has a musical reaction. The graphics are nice and retro and the audio is very nice. I encourage everyone to give this a try.
This was my favorite game from the Xbox arcade. I had the high score on xbox for 6+ years, and set up my 360 a few times just to get back in.
Remember Geometry Wars? It's similar to that but with Music at its core instead of bright explosions. I kept my 360 solely for this game, thats how great it is. Years ago, I'd get home around twenty after four from work and fire this game up. It was easily one of my favorite ways to chill and wind down after a long day. The game isn't deep, but it has a lot of depth. 3 basic modes, the last 2 being locked until you beat the first mode. Gameplay The game takes place in a 2d box. Your a little spaceship(that always reminded me of The Last Starfighter) and every enemy is a musical instrument. Some enemies only need 1 shot to kill(or trigger their instrument) while others, aka The Romulan looking ship (the rapper) requires numerous hits to kill. There's numerous waves which are all different. Each wave presents more difficulties than the last. There's changes in your weapons, rate of fire, enemy population and variety, and a lot more. Later in the game, some pretty crazy things happen, which are pretty exciting to encounter and play through. You only get 3 lives. Theres no restart from checkpoint. So getting to the end is an amazing feeling. Its very reminiscent experience to playing old games at the arcade. Theres definitely a lot of strategy and you'll learn through your play though how to attack each wave. However, I always called them Shells(guitar), can and will ruin your day. They can go out of the play zone, and come back in. They only take one shot, but when youve been backed into a corner or running a wall and your trying to get out, having a shell sneak in behind you is frustrating. Especially when you seconds to the next wave.. It is very easy to get swarmed and overwhelmed so here's a couple of beginner's tips. Tips Use the walls. It's important to use the walls, this will minimize how many sides you can be attacked from and you can concentrate your fire. Do not stay still for too long. Especially in a corner. It can cost you. After the first couple of waves avoid spending to much time in the middle. Very easy to get swarmed from all sides. However, use the middle to your advantage. It's a fantastic route to use for escape if and you can use it to get enemies to bunch up in a way you want. Run the wall. Run the wall shooting ahead or behind you will help a lot. Don't continually run the wall, take a couple of walls, turn around and go back or take middle and get them grouped up and fall back and take them out. There's a lot of trial and error. And do not stick to one thing. This game will punish you for it. Just relax and have fun. You will get there. Use your power ups when needed. They can pull you out of disaster. Conclusion These games are not usually my cup of tea, but I fell in love with this one even though I'm not the best at it. For $1.99, I cannot recommend it enough. This game has endless replayability. Perfect for whether you've got 15 min or hours to play. I would easily consider this one of my all-time favorite games. It's 2 bucks. I think you'll be surprised with how much you like it.
Please buy this game its so cheap and regularly goes on sale, its a great value and the Dev is super helpful on steam and twitter. Fun game. I'm so glad it came to Steam I loved it when it was on Xbox Indie Arcade back in the day. Has a lot of replayability. The price is great. The game play is great. The sound design is great. Cannot go wrong with this game. If I were rich I would gift this game to everyone on my friends list. EDIT: After this review they added a bunch of online Leaderboards so it got even better!
Played this game so much when it was first on the Xbox 360 and was happy to see it was added to Steam. Simple and super fun, one of my favorite arcade indie games. Will attempt to hold my spot at number 1 on the leader boards as long as possible. Buy the game though.
Never played it on Xbox but it still holds up nicely, gameplay is smooth and the whole rhythm thingy flows very well. My only minor (and very subjective) issue is lack of mouse aiming which forced me to play with an awkward WASD+stick controls scheme. Still, definitely worth those two dollars.
A Bird's Eye View Curator 🦜
Introduction
Fair warning at the start, the developer has been very kind to reach out to me as a Curator to leave a review for this game and despite me being extremely thankful that they did, this review is and will stay my personal honest opinion of the game. Groov is an Asteroids style game with a focus on the integrated duality of the gameplay influencing the music which in turn influences the gameplay.
Visuals and Mechanics
The visuals of Groov are an old school line-art like visuals not too unlike the original Asteroids look but then more colourful. As for the mechanics it's really easy to pick the game up, although a tad unintuitive you use one stick to move, one stick to aim/fire and the triggers for the slowdown power-up.
Gameplay
As the box says Groov is a twin stick shooter in which you avoid getting hit while blasting through waves of increasingly more difficult enemies. While it is cool that the enemies move to the beat, almost like they do in Crypt of the Necrodancer this task gets a slight bit harder than you may expect with the aiming with the stick being way more precise and unforgiving than it needs to be for a truly fun experience. The core and shining mechanic that sets Groov apart however is really cool! The song being part of your gameplay with it increasing in intensity with every wave and by extension also changing your rate of fire and bullet types is a really cool gimmick. It's also really awesome to hear that the slow down makes the song drop into an alternative, almost 'waltz' 1-2-3 2-2-3 rhythm instead of just half timing it. Lastly I'd like to mention that the game also allows for keyboard controls but you're limited to the 8 'wind directions' you can point at with the arrow keys which makes your aim more rock steady at the cost of holes in your defenses.
Soundtrack
The included soundtrack is really calming and fully integrated to the experience of playing and while it does build in intensity it doesn't get overbearing at all. The sound design on the other hand is largely pleasant but some enemies (like the big ships) have 'voices' that feel out of place and off putting.
Conclusion
So to sum it up, Groov is an enjoyable short, small and fun game that despite the slight challenge is fun to pick up every now and then to just enjoy the game. That said, and while I do recommend giving Groov a chance I can't recommend it at full price. The size of the game and the persnickety details of the game (namely it boots up with an error and achievements not triggering until you close the game) make Groov lack the polish that it would require for a full price recommendation. One of my favorite shooter games because the music just makes it so much better.
I remember playing the heck out of this game on my 360! I'm super glad that it's been ported. Really unique concept and would be super stoked if it ever had a sequel.
