About
Grim Tides blends tabletop RPG adventure, dungeon crawling and roguelike mechanics, and a classic turn-based combat system into something that feels equally like a solo tabletop campaign or a choose-your-own-adventure book. Detailed worldbuilding, abundance of lore and hand-drawn artwork make every run feel like a story in its own right.

As major factions and powers that be converge around you, you have a tough choice to make: will you be a simple puppet involved in a sinister plot beyond your understanding? Or will you take your fate into your own hands? Whatever your decision, it could have consequences far beyond your wildest imagination, because the hidden depths of the Isles' ancient jungles hide a secret so terrible, it could spell doom of the world itself.

It is what it says it is: a real old school RPG experience. The graphics style matches the retro theme of the game, and is very pleasant to look at. The turn-based combat is simple enough not to be cumbersome, yet complex enough to remain interesting and relevant throughout the game. Character development offers plenty customization options to suit many different play styles, and the game itself can be tweaked in many ways, so there's definitely some replay value here. Where the game really shines, though, is the writting. Detailed worldbuilding, intricate, mature storyline, and tons of interesting lore around every corner will make you feel like you're soloing through a well crafted tabletop campagin, subtly guided by an experienced and creative game master. This alone is worth the game's (modest) price tag, if not more. Oh, and there's a free demo, not something you see every day, so you really can't go wrong if you decide to give it a shot.
Fun indie game here. Alot deeper than one would think. There is a tons of customization with gear and spells. The game loop is old school making it very basic and fun. The dev could have charged more for this game imo. Pick it up and play it, alittle slow to start but it picks up after acouple hours. Reroll in the beginning if you are struggling as the right combination of spells will win the day for you. Great game and a nod to old school rpg's.
Another review compared this to playing one of those British gamebooks like Fighting Fantasy or Lone Wolf. In my opinion, Grim Tides is a lot different from that. If you want that sort of game, you should try Fabled Lands. Grim Tides is still pretty great though! It's a very mechanical game. It could almost be a board game or something. There is a lot of grinding, and the gameplay loop is repetitive, but if you like leveling your character up and fighting harder and harder enemies, this game is satisfying. I like that there are a lot of different ways to advance your character, and I also appreciate that there are perks for combat and exploration. The various systems in this game (combat, exploration, questing, economy, crafting, naval combat) all work well together.
Thanks man, I really apriciate that!

Game is fine until you die a few times, end up with no gold so cannot buy any healing equipment as a result cannot survive the dungeons to get any gold, end of game......
Worth it! More details: Fun gameplay loop: start in town, buy supplies, maybe a skill or spell, maybe equipment, then head to the dungeon. Simple graphics but not ugly and none of that retro pixel garbage. You CAN choose retro text and gear, but you don't have to. One step at a time on a grid uses 1 supply and can be empty, an encounter (simple but varied so far), or a fight. You can retreat from a level, but pay a penalty in gold, and you can die (and lose gold unless you did permadeath). Adjust difficulty with 4 settings, and level a little faster or slower. One simple but marvelously wonderful thing: the music is NOT on an endless loop. Every battle and time in town chooses randomly among several serviceable tracks, and the variety is SO VERY AWESOME. Why more game devs don't spare us the monotony like this is beyond me. Interesting skill and magic sets all with cool downs and limited uses per battle. It looks like something like 50 of them to choose from, all upgradeable... but so far, I'm only allowed a max of 2 spells and 2 skills. I really hope that cap increases when my character levels up enough. Eventually there's a ship and a chance to hire a sidekick who looks to provide a combat buff, weapon upgrades, potion making... I feel like I've just scratched the surface. I played the demo for awhile, then stopped for a break... and bought the game. Lots of fun!
Eh, kinda boring and the walls of text that serve as plot don't really interest me. It's fun to design a character and incrementally grow in power though. It's OK, but just OK.
A laid back Old School RPG. Played the mobile version so i decided to show support and buy it for the p.c.
It's a game I really wanted to love, but couldn't. The reality is, it's a (bad) adaptation of a mobile game, in my relatively short game-play, I encountered no less than 3 bug, some relatively mild, others game breaking. Which makes me think the adaptation to PC was rushed. But the issue is deeper than a poor adaptation. The reality is, in the mobile context, a game that doesn't prey on its player-base is a rarity. The options that are not horrendous cash grabs are really limited, and, in that context, Grim Tides, with its straightforward and honest business model, shines like a pear in an ocean of excrement. In the PC world though, things are different. Labor of love games made by small studios abound. What seemed exceptional in the mobile market, here's just meh. If it was a good adaptation of the game to PC, with appropriate controls and interfaces, polished and smooth, then it would be a consideration. But given that the core gameplay is good, but not excellent in the PC context, I can't excuse the extremely poor adaptation.
