About
Part dungeon crawler, part choose-your-own-adventure book, Grim Quest blends turn-based combat and roguelike mechanics with the kind of written storytelling and worldbuilding you'd expect from a solo tabletop campaign, all the while respecting your time. If you love getting lost in dark fantasy worlds, this one has plenty to get lost in, even in short, bit-sized sessions.

"When the Dark closes in, your own mind is your worst enemy..."
Welcome to Ashborne, an ancient city teetering on the brink of destruction and madness. Take control of one of its many hired mercenaries, and shape the city's destiny alongside your own.
Explore the ruins of a fallen civilization and, at the same time, plumb the hidden depths of your own mind to face your inner demons. Uncover sinister secrets of the Dark, a mysterious force that ended an era of prosperity. What will you find amidst all that horror and desolation? Do you even know what you're looking for?
"
"Mundane human failings eat at the core of Ashborne from within, just as the hordes of eldritch horrors, shaped by subconscious thoughts of its own inhabitants, besiege it from without."

I bought this game on sale because it looked interesting, installed it and just wanted to check if it runs well on my computer. As I closed it after what felt like ~10 minutes, I saw that I already played 80 minutes. Now I have completely forgotten about the other game I played as I bought Grim Quest and I don't have a life anymore :-D Grim Quest is very good and I recommend it !!
Been playing for 4 hours, and time flew by like it was 10 minutes. At first I was a little overwhelmed. But that quickly turned to being in awe about how much this game has to offer for such a small price. Combat seems simple at first, but with time, resource management plays a big role and how you use these resources to aquire items/skills/spells. Also I just like RPG´s that use small numbers for combat. So that gaining +1 in anyhing feels way more impactful then going from 10000 to 15000 in other games.
This was a tough choice between a thumbs "up" or "down". I was dissatisified with some issues, but have completed the main story line, so it cannot be that bad. This is an updated review after finishing the main story line. Further down this wall of text there is my older preview after a few hours of play. Pros: - Very good story and very good atmosphere. - Excellent artwork adorning the major story events. - Interesting leveling system that keeps the player wanting to always go the next mile. - Broad selection of skills and spells that probably make for many different playstyles / adventuring experiences (and with probably less impact, many different character backgrounds and companion animals). I cannot say for sure, though, I played only one playthrough and do not see me coming back for another. - Immediate, helpful response from the programmer (-s?) after publishing a critical review (see further below). Cons: - UI is from programmer's perspective, not from users': for several steps that take place quite often, one has to go from one screen / submenu to another and go back, e. g.: picking up a quest, turning quest in, going back to pick up another quest - information is not presented where it would be useful, e. g. when picking up quests you do not see if you already have similar / same quest (e. g., slaying a certain monster type); when checking item stats there is no automatic comparison with equipped item - no mouseover or similar hint about the buff and debuff icons' meaning / effect - the graphics of dungeon exploration are very very basic (you move a very simple icon across a rectangular field until you have covered all squares, trying to avoid squares where you have already been) - grindy. GRINDY. There are - for the main quest line - five dungeons (or adventuring environments) that you enter again and again, enountering the same monsters over and over. You enter each dungeon at least 30 (!) times to find the 2 bosses for each dungeon, which you need to vanquish in order to advance the story line. - Ultimately too easy. At least with my selection of spells and skills (maybe it was a lucky pick?), I was only once in real danger of my character dying. - The advertisement on steam says "reminiscent of the DnD tabletop rpg". IMHO, few descriptions of this game could be further from the thruth! Do not believe this advertisement. If you come for a DnD experience, look elsewhere! This is - IMHO - such a blatant lie that I firmly settle on "thumbs down". *** Here is my older review which I wrote after my initial experiences wioth the game. I am keeping it because otherwise the replies would not make sense anymore, and there is useful information in the replies: otherwise recommendable game gets my thumbs down for its poor user interface: Examples: In combat, you have cooldowns for spells and skills, but cannot see them at the same time. Rather, you must switch between their screens in order to use the other set and in order to check how many actions are left on their cooldowns. In town, there is much annoying switching between screens. E. g., the character has a larger "stash" of items (in the tavern) and a smaller backpack (in which to carry items around). This is fine as a concept. But in the alchemy screen you cannot see nor use your stash, but have to memorize the recipies of what you want to do, go back to the stash screen, look for memorized items, transfer items to (limited) backpack, go back to alchemy screen, and only then do stuff. And in said alchemy screen, you cannot see what items you need for certain quests, but would have to remember from some other screen, so more switching between them. And after making the item, you must switch to yet another screen to turn the quest item in. Another example: You get quests in the tavern screen. Some quests require you to obtain / to have a certain item. Sometimes, you already have the item. But in order to turn the quest in, you have to switch screens again. To make it worse, because you have an active quest limit, you sometimes would have to repeatedly accept quest, transfer item to backpack, go to other screen, turn quest in, return to quest giver screen, and rinse and repeat. And to top it off, there is always an annoying "bonk" sound EVERY TIME you switch said screens. Of course, you could turn sounds completely off, but that makes you miss out on the other sounds. And to turn sounds off only in town (you guessed it) - you have to switch screens.
It was good for 15 hours then I got kind of bored. Definitely worth the price on sale, and who knows, you might get addicted to it. My recommendation is to play about 10 levels of the first dungeon then start thinking about your "real" build to start over. Starting over doesn't delete your original game, but you won't go back to it.
Sorry, that was a miss for me. The whole game is like an interactive book, which is fine and was expected. But the gameplay is just boring. The dungeons are repetitive way too few events or interesting aspects. For a "story" game, the stories are spread far between and the balancing seems weird. You get quests with no indication how and where to solve them, which is an issue cause you only can take a limited amount of quests and might end up with quests that arent even solvable in your current state. I still have the "kill 6 rats" quest, which I assumed would be the first enemies int he first dungeons... but almost 90 minutes later I still havent encountered a single rat....
Great storytelling and world building in the game. I've just beaten the orc chief, but can't wait to see how the rest of the story unfolds
Amazing game. Originally there was only a mobile port but it has since been adapted for pc very well. Great world, well written lore (and lots of it), very satisfying progression and a multitude of ways to build your character. Definitely play this if you like text rpgs.
Maybe we need a DLC for some extra equipment slot and additional gameplay?Still,I think this game totally overshadows its sequel, due to some balance-and-control-related problems happened in that.
