If you like ARPGs, this is an immediate buy. Absolutely top 5 of all time in the ARPG category. Don't question it, just buy it.
TL;DR - YES! MILLION TIMES YES! Long version: The only thing I regret about this game is that I bought it on a sale some time ago instead of getting it full price. If I haven't passed the refund thresholds that Steam has, I would instantly refund it to buy it full price! I had this collecting dust in my library for quite a while and saw it was gaining popularity recently due to upcoming expansion coming up (yes 10 years later!) and decided to give it a go. My oh my am I happy I did. This game is an absolute love letter to those who grew up in the 90s and early 2000s. It has gritty atmosphere to immerse you. The story is actually pretty damn well written. The world and characters feel grounded and believable. You are NOT the chosen one - you are a regular nobody, that has to work his way up in the world - finally a breath of fresh air and a game where noone treats you like the king, because you're the chosen one. It has plenty depth and customisation options (MULTICLASS! ! ! !) to the point where it's deep and complicated enough to actually make you think and keep you interested, but at the same time it's not stupidly complicated for the sake of being complicated to put you off. With the DLCs the replay value is endless as there's always something new to try and check out. Theory crafting that actually works! Most importantly - it's an ARPG but still: - no FOMO - no seasons - no live service - no battlepasses - can be played offline and without internet connection - for those too young to know what a gem this is and those that don't remember the glory days - you can hop in play as much as you wish, hop off, uninstall, install few months later and hop back in exactly where you left off and you haven't missed anything, the game is there with all the content waiting for you to have fun - no generative AI in the official release for writing, artwork and music and devs that say they will never release anything with generative AI So who is this for? - Are you tired of Blizzard treating you like guinea pig releasing broken seasons and patches for D4 and to apply fixes weeks after an issue emerges and to play a game as wide as an ocean and as shallow as a puddle? - Are you tired of GGG treating you like guinea pig, by making you pay to be a beta tester for a ridiculous mess of a "game" that has 0 fun and slot machine type crafting system, that almost year after the initial release can't fix their broken servers and the excuse is "tHaT'S wHaT EA is FoR", even though they manage to have fully operational ingame MTX shop (yeah they did that part right)? - Are you tired of mindless souless AI slop copies of the above like Last Epoch and the such? Well if you answered yes to all of this - then this game is for you. Not to mention that on sale it drops to 2$ which for the amount of content is basically giving it away for free.
re
I put 1800 hours into PoE1 and noped out after too many nerfs and SSF nonviability in the long term. I've played 4100 hours in Last Epoch; still a great, recommended game. Grim Dawn is easily as good. Great build variety and viability, interesting enough story, almost too much gear. Gear appearance and visual design is quite nice. Endgame mechanics are good despite grumblings from the entitled. The new Ascendancy option, the new mastery, and all the QoL/game fixes should make a great game even better. Those complaining about the cost for Asterkarn should take another look at the current trends in game prices, as well as the current cost for the existing Grim Dawn content. it's more than worth the price to actually pay Crate for all this work.
Great ARPG 👍
Where do I even begin? I simply got addicted to it and dropped 50hrs in a week. I used to play MMOs when I was a kid and would get addicted to grind games running quests left and right but ever since I grew up I haven't played such things as much. Grim Dawn scratched that itch in me and actually offered a better experience. With the game being an ARPG not and MMO it incorporates the grind into your playthrough seamlessly. You won't need to necessarily drop hours farming a single item unless you wanna min max and beat every single hard end game mode. but the game is totally beatable with almost any build. On that note, Grim Dawn offers a lot of possible build routes with the double class system. You pick two classes and mix and mash their abilities together. Every class in the game deals like 3-7 different damage types so practically every class can work with another, of course the game is solved by its huge theory crafting fanbase so there are optimal builds, but even then I still had fun running around with a bizzare freaky build (dual wielding gunslinger pierce/cold apostate) so there is room for crafting your own builds. As for the visuals, I simply love the old school gritty UI and HUD going on in here. graphically the game looks fine with some areas really looking very cool (The Eldritch realm for example) and others really nail the theme and feeling of the narrative (Ashes of Malmouth areas). I didn't get really into the lore but the game offers too much notes to flesh its world and fantasy so you can definitely be a nerd about the lore The game has a serviceable soundtrack, nothing too special nothing too bad to stand out. They are just solid. Okay I lied, in the Ashes of Malmouth DLC the sewer base offers one of the best OSTs I heard in a while (keep in mind I played this literally after playing Silksong so yeah it is that good) THE GAME HAS CO-OP, YIPPEEE! If you are looking for an old school ARPG to sink hours into with multiple playthroughs and different builds with your folk, you can pick it up and it goes on sale very frequently too
