Play this if: You want a smaller-scale, light, and cozy story RPG in between a bunch of other longer AAA games. ========= *Story: The story parts play out like a visual novel, and I like the little expression changes at times. You can make dialogue choices at times, which can determine a character's personality. Based on what I've unlocked so far they add a little permanent buff to your character, which is pretty useful in combat. The story isn't too heavy or epic (like not world ending level), but there's some mystery here and there and some big bad pulling the strings. *Characters: It's nice having a small party. Most of them have known each other before so there's a little drama and silliness with their history and relationships. You play as the leader, Erika, who seems a little bossy but also protective of her buddies. Viva is super cute and acts as the voice of reason and helps to anchor Erika. Cap seems a little high-strung, but it's not overly done and he does deliver some funny lines. NPCs make mostly short appearances, but I like the variety of personalities so far. *Combat: Turn-based combat, but some aspects are simplified/different from other RPGs like the health bar having no numbers, no mana/magic, and turn orders being shown as individual bars. Each character can add points to 'affinities' upon level up, which are basically things like more attack power, more health, faster initiative etc. There are also special ones divided into Physique/Intellect/Spirit which are tied to their personal weapon (you cannot change this weapon out) and other gear they equip, acting almost like their 'classes'. However I've tried reassigning their attributes (resetting these are free, THANK YOU!!!) and don't seem to experience an issue. This game makes status effects fun to play around with, like actually putting an enemy to sleep or stunning them can seriously save a party member's life. So far I've only been playing on Story mode which scratches my combat itch enough, I'm assuming Strategy mode will be way harder. *For Steam Deck players: This game also runs great on the Deck so far, did not have to apply any extra settings. You can also use the touch screen to make it easier to target or select stuff in combat. It's much easier for me to play this portably, especially with the VN story format. ========= This game launched in Early Access, but it's pretty much playable (about 5-6 hours in) and quite a tight/polished game, and I see the roadmap still leaves room for improvements and new modes. I look forward to the creature/pet feature, and the recipe hunting quests!
A quaint cozy indie game that pulls at your heart strings the deeper you get into it. It begins with a fairly normal Isekai setting with a ragtag group of teens, but I'm impressed by how the story develops around the characters - especially Cap (no spoilers). Simple turn based strategy, short and sweet. Nothing more I can ask for.
Overall: Enjoyed the game so far. Nice graphics and the character designs have great personality. Like the idea of modern world students fall into the book of the medieval age. It plays like a visual novel + RPG gameplay, with decent amount of combats with monsters. Combat: Though you might require some time to explore and understand the combat system, it becomes so much easier when I found out that you can tooltip the items and character during combat and in the shop. There are so much of info hidden in the tooltip. Story: The story is quite immersive. There's a decent amount of combats between story sections, so it doesn't feel too dull by just doing the reading, and it makes it to be more engaging and blends well into the story. Graphics: I like this the most. The art style is very eye catching, feels like Professor Layton + Harry Potter style. Music: I like how the music is being presented with a mixture of mystery + medieval theme songs. Fits quite well with the game. Some of musics are too low in volume, and can barely hear it using my soundbar. Using headphones seems to have better experience.
+ The first chapter of the game does a lot of heavy lifting on the narrative front, and may seem a little slow and confusing but the mystery really picks up after this. + Been keeping an eye on this game as I love the art style - It has a Gravity Fall meets Ni No Kuni vibe to me + The combats and encounters get interesting over time as new items and gear are offered in the Shop. + While it's in Early Access, the foundation looks solid, and I'm excited to see how it evolves. Some of the features that they showed in the roadmap plans towards 1.0 look really interesting. + I think the game is truly different and is clearly made with a lot of heart. Worth a try.
Just started this indie game, doing quests in the initial starting village. Dialogue is quirky and engaging, combat is turn based, I like that it does not try to rush me to make a decision and allows me to play at my own pace! I also enjoy the variety of items and equipment that I've seen so far, giving me choices in the combat styles and flavor of these characters. Enjoying the game so far, and looking forward to see what the future chapters will look like, definitely recommend.
Grifford Academy is more toward interactive visual novels than an Turnbased RPG at this early access stage, if you expect deep RPG elements, you going to be disappointed. The battle systems/ Item mechanic still in a baby stage i would say, the items stats is a mess in the later chapters. (Dev going to improve in roadmap) However, the story is what get your hook into this game, you are transported into an fantasy land with others persons that you are not close with, slowly build up relationship, entangle once bad relationship and finally form a great team that support each others. Played the demo a ton, and insta-bought it when it launched in Early Access. I love the coming of age story setting, and the combat gets quite interesting once you pick up a couple of items. Excited to play the rest of it when I get home!
Crafted with heart and creativity, this indie game delivers a unique and emotionally rich experience. Its thoughtful design, charming visuals, and immersive soundtrack reflect the deep passion of its developers. A true gem that proves small teams can create unforgettable adventures.
