Put 5 hours into this, now here's what I think. The story, theme & characters are all likable (even Koniko and her questionable violent streak haha). Everything feels like it belongs in this world. There's a few details here and there that I felt were nice touches. The comic book/graphic novel style cutscenes are a refreshing take on the typical cutscene/dialog moments found in most RPG games. The combat system isn't a common style either. I can remember maybe one Mega Man game that used a similar style. It gives you enough action and real-time movement to make it not a typical RPG. Mechanically most of the combat system makes sense; most of it (I'll explain in a bit). Music and sound is approriate. The overall graphic style, while not top-of-the line is done well and that's important as I've seen games with high-level graphics do a bad job with them. Everything works and fits within the scope of the game without detracting from anything. The blocking system in this game is questionable to atrocious at times. It felt like they were going for a system similar to what was done in Super Mario RPG with timed hits. The block is poorly timed in this game and you often get hit by things that you shouldn't get hit by. I feel like the window where things can be blocked is far too tight, especially with slower projectiles. This definitely needs a tweak. The levelling system with the sigils calls to things like Dark Souls in a way. I do like it, but I feel like the gaps are too large. The first one or two times it is low cost, but then there's a massive jump in cost. Like one stat going from 3 to 10 to 75 sigils. Gives the game an artificial feeling power creep and it will require grinding if you want to boost a stat. This can be annoying as the power of a completed area tends to scale upward the next time you visit it, even though the game tells you "eventually it'll be easy". Also the game does not support keyboard/mouse on a PC. I feel like maybe it is because this game was made for consoles first, so controller is your only option. I'd like to see WASD movement for PC added in. This game is a final release, so I'm not sure if they plan on adjusting things or if it is done to them. Hopefully the dev team sees this and takes it into account. The $24.99 USD price tag I feel is appropriate, given the overall scope of the game and the fact it was probably a console-first build. Even with the gripes I have, I do find the game quite enjoyable and do recommend it. I hope that the dev team might consider rebalancing some issues. Check out my Youtube VOD of the game and my initial reactions to it -- like & subscribe there too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjSHOn-J1s8
NOTE: The first mask/ summon in this game summons a topless woman though no nipples are shown I really want to like this game. The art and music are fun and unique. The combat has potential for depth via squad building and each battle requires a lot of thought. Unfortunately difficulty balancing and poor signposting cause major issues. By mid game, most enemies oneshot you and when combined with the 60 second revive timer, that means that most fights snowball after your first party member goes down. Second, enemies reflect attacks with no warning, so you can't bait them out, which means you have to be far enough away to reflect any attack at all times or risk losing a member and starting the snowball. Since there's no difficulty selection, there are some fights where you have to pray the RNG favors you. I hoped that these issues would be fixed a year later but no.
Second day playing Grid Force and I love it, to the point I'd like to recommend it. Not only the graphics and the soundtrack are great, but the story has been captivating so far; the diverse characters are a breath of fresh air and make gameplay different, in a positive way. The features I've enjoyed the most the the ability of mimicking opponents and kicking their "bullets" back at them. I had not purchased a game for some time, I recommend this game to anyone who likes a fights with a strategic twist.

Grid Force is even more fun than it looks. It's like playing any other tactical game - moving around the grid, managing resources, timing your special abilities for max effect - except it's all happening in fast-paced real-time. Great squad-based mechanics. Grid Force is an interesting tactical/RPG/shooter hybrid. It's surprisingly fast-paced and intense combining squad combat with a range of cool super abilities, a neat levelling system and a fun story. Want to know more? Ok, the game is awesomely good. HOWEVER, it is TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO buggy. If you have patience for the bugs, you will enjoy a very good story, good gameplay and nice graphics. Edit: i've just lost my save after 80h. Sorry, but no.
When I saw the trailer for Grid Force I wasn’t interested. The trailer didn’t wow and there are so many games out there I knew that this game was probably going to be one that I was going to skip. This is evidence on how dumb I can be sometimes. I’m so glad that I didn’t skip out fun ass game. So what is this game? Who is it for and what rating am I going to give it? Let’s dive into it. Grid Force - Mask of the Goddess is a grid-based bullet hell game with a gorgeous art-style, solid gameplay, and a deep roster of playable characters. You play as Donna, who wakes up in a strange land with no memory of who she is and why she is there. Thankfully she meets up with a squad of ladies who not only want to help here recover her memory, but also help her to defeat the goddesses and save the future. The game plays like a shooter version of dodgeball. You have a side of the grid that you are free to move, dodge, and shoot in and your opponents have the same. Your goal is to defeat all your opponents before they defeat you. I really dig the lore of this game. They way this game tells its story is a mixture between the in game text bubbles and a detailed manga style cut scenes that you can read at your own pace. The fact that the world is now the Grid which is shattered remnants of the Old world that’s been cobbled together. You can see a lot of different cultures represented in the setting of the game. A huge plus for Grid Force is game’s cast of characters. I can’t stress enough how dope it is that all the characters in this game are diverse women. This isn’t just a gimmick, you can tell that each character was given a wealth of details and that there was lots of love put into each character. The main characters that make up your team are Komiko who is a quick tempered kimono wearing warrior who has a dope sword, Bird a bazooka tooting a easy going Islander, and Pan who is the wind wielding goofball in a floating chair. It’s also cool how much freedom that you have in leveling you characters and roster. Through the element points that you earn you can make your character really good at wielding an element and also raise the physical that is associated with that element. It’s a leveling up system that feels unique and well thought out. There are a ton of characters that you can recruit for your squad. That brings me to another plus in this game’s favor. The story choices you make in this game feel like they have weight behind them. It feels like every choice matters. The game even has a disclaimer that tells you when you are about to make a really big decision that’s going to impact the narrative. A choice you make can decide who joins your team, unlocks more world building lore or even decides who lives and who dies. I also want to shout out the art style. This game is colorful, vibrant and extremely detailed. It’s features a pixel 2D art style that looks simply amazing. No game is perfect and here are some of my gripes with this one. I feel like way that you block or defect attacks could be better. I like the mechanic it just doesn’t feel like it was executed as well as it could have been. The health bar does get lot with all the actions and colors that are being displayed on the screen. My last gripe is that the background music stopped work a few times during the game. It happened in parts that like in the middle of battles which was weird. Overall I think Grid Force Mask of the Goddess is an indie game that is a strong contender for sleeper game of the year. If you want to play a game that has addicting gameplay and a diverse and fun roster of characters then you should definitely play Grid Force. This game has its flaws, but for every flaw there are three things that this game nails. I want to again shout-out how unique and refreshing it is that all the playable characters are diverse women. If you’re looking for a fast pace action RPG that is fresh and unique then look no further than Grid Force: Mask of the Goddess.
Grid Force - Mask of the Goddess is a grid-based bullet hell game with fantastic art, solid mechanics, and an interesting premise for a plot. I'll admit that I did not expect much from a glance at the game but it took me quite by surprise when I played it, in fact I'll tell you why the game is good. Story Floating in a broken void, our protagonist named Donna is asleep as a voice calls out to her. She soon awakes and has to fight for her life. One after another, she meets her supposed "allies" however she cannot remember any of them then gets tasked with a nearly impossible mission: To kill the gods. That is how we are introduced to our main character, Donna, but I find the lore to be just as interesting. Apparently the old world was destroyed as a result of a war between Machinae which are the creators/gods of the new world. The new world is created and maintained in The Grid which pieces together shattered remnants of the old world. This includes places of differing culture such as polynesian, japanese, and many more so lots of flavor! Anyway, the cast of characters are colorful and have their own personalities & cultures. Pan is the adorable goofball in the chair, Komiko is the hotheaded warrior girl who wear a kimono and wields a huge sword, and then there's Bird who is a gentle motherly islander...with a bazooka. There are so many other characters that can be recruited depending on what story choices you make. Speaking of story choices, I'm glad that the game clearly states when a decision you'll make will be extremely impactful on the story and route you'll be taking. There are decisions that make you decide on whether or not characters will die, maybe some will join your team, or it'll eventually lead to new lore. Gameplay The gameplay is centered on a grid that will serve as the battlefield. This means that you can only move up, down, left, or right to an available space. The amount of space you'll have to move will be dependent on each level. Enemies will also move in their own grid in real-time and shoot at you. Of course you'll be able to shoot back at them by literally button mashing the space bar. As you progress, you can choose to level up your characters to gain new abilities to use in battle. You can manage your squad of characters though you'll be using Donna a lot. It should be noted that each character has their own distinct power and "role". Komiko has low health but she does a lot of damage fast, Pan plays more of a support and can mimic enemy attacks, etc. Art The art is spectacular, just no denying it. It has a comic book vibe to the cutscenes. The character designs are unique and fabulous. The environment for the levels is well drawn and represents the culture that it seeks to portray in a colorful light. Nitpicks I do have some nitpicks with Grid Force which don't mean the game is bad but I could see as diminishing the satisfaction of the player. First of all, the bars that show the characters' stamina, health, and focus are way too hard to see. They are extremely thin which makes it a bit annoying to keep track as a bunch of projectiles are headed towards your way. Second, more voice acting could have been used to further immerse the player in the game. This is warranted by how the dialogue actually shows how different personalities mesh or clash with each other. Also because most of the time as you're reading, there's only the ambient sound and some music but mostly quiet. Third, the hitboxes and input delays are annoying. It's hard to tell when your character is able to deflect enemy projectile because the projectile could be a few inches away from your character but you can instantly deflect it. But there are times when I press the button quickly but my character doesn't even do the animation to deflect and I take a boatload of damage. Might be a skill issue so take it with a grain of salt. Verdict I highly recommend it to people that enjoy grid-based bullet hell games, story that revolves around making choices, grinding for leveling up. It's fun and highly replayable!
For other game reviews, please follow us at What The Game?
