If you are new to Graviteam tactics don't get this game, get Mius Front or tank warfare Tunisia first
This is a great game, kinda like the Close Combat series, but in 3D and with a turn based strategic layer. The reason why I recommend getting Mius Front or Tank Warfare Tunisia first is that GT Operation Star has a older GUI, that has been streamlined in the newer titles. the old GUI really makes the learning curve harder, so if you're new to this series, I'd advice you to get Mius Front first. Also Mius Front has more DLC, including remakes of some of Operation Star DLC, and of Operation Star. To anyone interested, the game runs great in Linux via Proton.
I'm no stranger to clunky, complex or even tediously entertaining games, but this one is just on another level of unaproachable. There is a steep learning curve and then there is a learning vertical wall. Cupled with god-awful UI it becomes just completely unplayable without sinking hours into the tutorial, Youtube guides and manual, and I don't mean a couple, I mean tens of hours. I feel that this is a game only and exclusively for hardcore WW2 enthusiasts, the kind that knows which commander led which division into what village on 1941 November 26th. And even if you've got your WW2 tactical guide memorised you need about the same serving of intense study to understand mechanics and UI. I appreciate the detail and will to create a very detailed simulation but it really should have first and foremost been labelled as hardcore simulation and only then strategy. "Want to step into the role of a commander in the very heart of Kharkov’s defense?" No, I don't, I don't have the time nor will to spend 30h studying your UI and mechanics.
Anything by Graviteam is a must have if you like military titles. Highly recommended, along with their other titles, including "Tank Warfare: Tunisia 1943" and "Graviteam Tactics: Mius Front". The newer titles mentioned have a better, updated interface, but this is still extremely excellent. I wish they'd issue a patch to update this one to the new interface. But that's certainly not a deal breaker by any means. My hours are much higher, I keep Steam offline for Family Sharing. Buy this. You won't be sorry.
i got this on the sale and didnt expect anything special but i was way wrong, its not as complicated as it looks and the campaigns and battles are very thematic, you will need patience for this game though as a lot of the time you are waiting for the enemie to engage your frontline, but when they do all hell breaks loose,it captures ww2 perfectly,i highly recommend this game to all wargamers and strategy gamers,
Bonkers complex, to a degree that it feels like you to have to have passed a Soviet Officer Training Degree before you can deploy ^^ - but of definite interesting example for anyone who wants to see a passionately made wargame that put realism as number 1 and ease of playability down the line. Single player only and learning curve that ha to be seen to be believed.
Criminally underrated. Fantastic game with all the depth in the world.
Superb, massively in depth simulation. The in game tooltips combined with some early googling/youtube tutorials are essential in order to understand even remotely what is going on. Once you start getting that understanding the learning curve becomes even richer. My advice, start with the quick battle option rather than campaign in order to explore mechanics in a much more controlled way.
I have +500 hours in my older steam account, and the nostalgia brought me back. One of the best RTS ever made, i like it more than Mius Front. Even with older graphics and UI.
