About
Who needs backstory? Who needs resource-gathering? Diplomacy is so last year. Gratuitous Space Battles cuts right to the chase of sci-fi strategy games, and deals with large, completely unjustified space battles between huge opposing space fleets.
Gratuitous Space Battles combines the visual appeal of an RTS, with the addictive unit-placement and design gameplay from tower defense games. In GSB, the player does not control individual ships at all during battle. The ships fight to a pre-determined set of orders and formations given to them by you before the battles.
GSB casts you as supreme space admiral, tasked with the design of individual spaceships, and the composition of your fleet, as well as general orders of engagement. This is not a twitch-based real time arcade game like many an RTS, but a game of careful thought, planning and big-picture strategy. Huge space battles can be won or lost depending on just how cleverly you balanced the needs of defensive shielding and armor against the expensive punch of laser cannons and plasma torpedoes.
4 different unlockable player races
Over 40 different ship hulls
Over 120 spaceship modules
Choice of skirmish vs AI, or never-ending survival mode
Play with different rules as each battle has different spatial anomalies to deal with.

Absolutely do not buy this game and give money to an awful developer. They still expect 15 dollars for this game when it is broken, you need to connect to a server and register to play single player, which you can't do as the Devs abandoned the game. But despite being well aware of the issue they still have it up for sale, Steam needs to remove this from the store.
Don't get me wrong- I absolutely loved this game, until the devs stopped keeping up with it. Now, the campaign part of the game is no longer playable, which is like, half the game. It's incomplete now.
Campaign was shut down because you had to connect to a server to play, dev pulled the server down and no longer can play campaign "pass this hard" #stopkillinggames
Game will not start, buyer beware.
This was gifted to me years ago. It was so good back then, it sadly doesn't open now. Don't buy it for your own sake.
I went to play this again after some time away from to find it is not able to function without being online. What a shame. One would think a little game from this long ago would be an offline title but alas, its abandon ware now. Do not buy.
Non-functional, CD-Key refuses to register. Do not purchase. Used to be good years back, reinstalled and popped it open to play today, itsdeadjim.png
STEAM SHOULD NOT BE SELLING SOFTWARE WHICH HAS BEEN ABANDONED AND NO LONGER WORKS! The 'campaign' section of this game requires you to login online. Steam knows that the online servers have been TAKEN DOWN, but they don't tell anyone! They are taking money under FALSE PRETENCES, which is a criminal offence in the UK.
I'll start off by saying I really enjoyed this when I first played it, but now I've come back to it, I can't register my key (it says key invalid). There's no contact for support, and if you look at the forums, it is full of people with the same issue. Not recommended until this issue is fixed
cant play campaign no more server shutdown took the campaign with it
