Grapple Dog is such a charming game with a cute aesthetic, amazing music, a fun main gimmick, amazing boss fights and funny writing! The movement in this game feels great, and it's so much fun optimising levels and trying to get the fastest possible time. It does unfortunately fall short in a couple of areas. Most levels in a given area can feel quite samey, and overall the level design itself is *fine* but nothing mind-blowing. I wish there were more stages which did something more interesting and memorable. And, also, because I was playing with the analog stick rather than the D-pad, when going for particularly ambitious time trial strategies, I found myself constantly falling into spikes because of the grappling hook being limited to three set angles. I feel like you'd be able to push the game to its limits much further if it allowed you to shook your hook at any angle you wanted. Overall, a decent game!! Definitely worth a play if you're into charming indie platformers :)
Grapple Dog is 2d platformer in the mold of Mario about an anthropomorphic dog with freakishly large hands, who finds a grappling hook and has to save the world from a robot invasion. This game is comfort food: a competent platformer with a grappling hook that gets tricky, but remains fair. It has an appealing visual style, the controls are responsive and satisfying, I liked how levels are presented both as collection challenges and time trials, and its boss battles are well designed and are there to test your core platforming skills. It won't break any expectations, it's all well done. My only complaints are that world 1 is a bit too easy and can set the wrong expectations, and that the game's music quickly starts to grate and should be replaced with something else. But minor nitpicks aside, it took me about 14 hours to 100% and I would recommend this if you like 2d platformers.
A really solid 2D platformer
The first game released by Joseph Gribbin's studio Medallion Games, Grapple Dog follows the trials of a hapless dog named Pablo and his quest to stop a threat to the world after inadvertently enacting his universe's equivalent of Revelation 20:7...long story. Aiding him in his quest is his crew of fellow research assistants, their boat, and a grappling hook that codifies how the game uses momentum and physics as a platformer. Pablo's grappling ability lets him swing from blue blocks and launch himself great distances with the right timing, naturally, but it also works as a mobility tool and weapon in other respects. See, the main way to proceed through the game is to acquire purple gems to help you progress, and the skillset you'll have to learn to get said gems really depends on a mastery of what the game has in front of you. Certain jumps seem hopeless until you realize Pablo's grapple shot holds you in midair for a split second regardless of whether you hit a grapple-able object, for example. Helping bolster this colorful adventure is a delightful soundtrack by Jazz Mickle. Good stuff!
This is an okay game with several annoying things that make me frustrated while playing and gameplay make me nostalgic for it when I'm not playing it. The biggest issues I Have with this game is the fact that the boss levels are full levels with all the collectables then the boss which is completely unnecessary and frankly annoying. The next is actually a good thing and a bad thing and that is the fact that bosses have to be unlocked by the purple gems you collect but the price of entry is low throughout the entire game until the final boss where you have to get well over half the gems in the game despite needing so few for the rest of it. The final thing are the horrid spinning and moving blue grapples that are the worst part of the game and are the most frustrating to deal with since the grapple hook never feels like its long enough and the timing of the moving parts is never where you need it. But despite the frustrating parts the game itself is...fine. Its a very basic 2D platformer with levels that always feel just a little too long but the game itself isn't too long as long as you collect the gems from the bonus levels which are easier to get then the ones in the main levels. The grabble is fun to use and once you get use to using it, it becomes quite fun to swing around and bounce on everything round. While I would never want to play anymore of this game then i have to it was fun. Most of my frustration could be boiled down to skill issue so i'm not going to hold it against the game.
This is a good platformer that starts off easy but ramps up in challenge the further you go. To collect all the purple crystals it is required to spend a little extra time exploring off the main path as they are usually hidden or require some extra moves in order to access them. There is a time trial mode after completing each stage as well. For controls, I played on analog joystick & the controls felt good. The music was a little repetitive, & I did encounter some bugs with the audio, where after resetting a stage, the music & sometimes even all sound would stop completely, but after resetting the level again the sound would come back. Overall, I would recommend the game.
Recommending this one but with caveats, worth it only on deep discount (70% or higher). Grapple Dog belongs to the 'scour the level for all the things' school of platformers, similar to the Donkey Kong Country series or something like Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair. It's not as good as the best DKC titles. Just like those games, it plays more like a precision-platformer than a cozy collectathon. While it contains very challenging content and 100%-ing it would be quite a hardcore task, most genre fans could complete it (you need 190/300 gems to access the final boss). When Grapple Dog is good, it's exceptionally good. It's also filled with little facepalm record-scratch fumbling as it goes along. Sometimes it is misguided, sometimes it is unpolished, sometimes it is extraneous, and within all that, it's a pretty solid 'find the secrets' precision platformer that just wasn't honed into what it could be. Lastly: this is one of those dreaded games that, for whatever reason, wants to convince you that videogame plots are dumb (whoa). Be prepared to mash that cutscene skip button.
