Great
A spectacular third-person action game that, in my opinion, doesn't age very well. But it's still worth playing. God of War 2018 was stuck in my backlog for a really long time. As years went by I've heard great things about it, Even Skyrim mods started to based gameplay overhauls on this game. I had a pretty high expectation to say the least. The best quality of this game is easily the performance of the characters during the story. Each cutscene is filled with subtle facial animations and body languages that you can't help but be invested with Kratos and Atreus's son-dad dynamic. And the character developments, especially Atreus's, are done really well. Playing this game for the story aspect alone is already worth it. One thing about the presentation of the story that I'm not too much of a fan of is the dialogues - more specifically the "Marvel-ified" choices of words. Quirky teenager quips and overly casual Atreus's lines are pretty immersion-breaking for me. I understand he's a kid, but this is still a game set in a fantasy world where gods and mythical creatures exist, people talking like average Californians just don't cut it for me. The gameplay is done really well. Western Playstation's first party games are always decent in the gameplay department, some are even revolutionary like Spiderman and Ghost of Tsushima, and this modernized God of War is about as impressive. Kratos animations are weighty and satisfying, while still being agile and snappy enough to never feel clunky. You do feel like controlling a very capable warrior who knows how to hit hard but also is smart about his movement. Being a very zoomed-in and close-quarter hack 'n slash game, the over-the-shoulder camera and movement that's tied to it work flawlessly. It achieved the focused and grounded feel while the player doesn't lack the urgency and awareness thanks to enemy indicators. I can see why a lot of people like this combat system. Despite consisting mostly of action corridors, there are surprising amount of explorations to be done. Almost every opportunity, there will be a secondary path or an alternative use of a mechanism to reach optional rewards like upgrade items or resources. Trying to get everything will easily double or even triple your playtime. And that's pretty much where my praises end. The reason why I think this game doesn't hold up well is how we've been getting excellent action games over the years since this came out. This might've been game of the year in 2018. But getting to play Sifu, Expedition 33, 007 First Light, the Yakuza games, RE Requiem, Hi-fi Rush, and other great action games before this, makes what's limiting about this GoW even more noticeable: levels that are basically corridors, combat skills that are not very interesting, reused 4-5 kinds of enemies, and story pacing that can be summed up as "X is in the way and we need to find Y to open it". Again, I can believe this game was incredible in 2018, and it is still good now. But if you're playing this for the first time and you have other newer games as comparisons, you might find this game on the lower rank than you might've thought.
TLDR;
Still a great game after all these years. I just personally find it not as good as other singleplayer action games in the market right now.
