Sadly this is an example of how a good point and click adventure game shouldn't look like. Story could be even interesting… three different characters - Vooju Priest, fatty pirate cook and pirate lady captain; forced to somewhat work together to save the world from Vooju Witch and an old evil sleeping deep inside a volcano. Game is equally divided between our heroes - you can switch between them freely when they still have something to do, they can even give advice to each other on how to proceed in a particular situation (although I have found this a little bit lacking). You spent half of the time as ghosts with limited skills and possibilities which can be nicely seen on the inventory system - you don't have everything on you, the hero will just note it for future references so you don't go around with a large boulder or something like that (remember Simon's hat? ;D). All of this sounds all right, now to the negative points. When you click on items you get description / comment on it from the characters, that's fine, pretty normal in adventures. Sadly you can't skip them. So, when you are thinking what to do next (happens a lot) and you examine the items you can work with you have to listen to all of the lines again. Some of them were rather long and after a while it turned out to be annoying. Moving between screens is delayed by black screen each time you go somewhere… not that I can't wait, but it disturbs the immersion of the situation. There are subtitles 'in game', but not during the cutscenes which was a little troublesome as I am not native English speaker and some of the characters speak with strong accents so I had a problem with keeping up with them and again it disturbs the immersion. Graphic is okay, I am just a bigger fan of 2D or pixel graphics I think. Story seemed to be a little bit rushed and the ending was a rather disappointing one as there wasn't any real conclusion to it. There were plans for a sequel which were not realized, only some spin-off. Some moments of the game are enjoyable, with good jokes and many referrals on popular culture, but the overall experience was sadly rather boring.
I responded to this development with the kind of sophisticated language for which I am famous. "Crap crap crap crap crap crap crap stupid stupid stupid stupid stupid crap.” ~John Green
There's something seriously wrong with VG careers. You do some stand-up comedy – you end up with your own show. You're interested in what makes computers click? You end up with your own software giant. But if you make video games? There's a big chance for you to become a phony. Peter Molyneux. Creator of brilliant, one of a kind games like Populois, Dungeon Keeper, Black & White, Fable and others. Ended up scamming over three million people with mobile app, in which those were supposed to tap screen for almost a year for a laughably low chance to get a reward. Which was never even given. Chris Roberts. A man behind Wing Commander and Freelancer. Currently heads the biggest scam in video games history. The list goes on and on, but you've got the idea. And even though our today's story is not that bad, it's still sad. Please, welcome - William V. Tiller. Full Throttle, The DIG, The Curse of Monkey Island... You like point-and-click genre - you sure know the man. In 2001 he left LucasArts. Initially, it was announced that he's going to join ArenaNet, bu-u-ut something didn't work out and he ended up co-founding his own company, Autumn Moon Entertainment. To make his own games. In point-and-click genre, of course. Because that's what people usually do when something new doesn't work out for them – they return to what worked for them before. Unfortunately... yeah. It wasn't 90s anymore. The genre didn't do nearly as well as it used to, majority of players demanded simplifications and it was much harder to deliver a new game from scratch. Because, like I said, it wasn't 90s anymore and good visuals became much more expensive. Thankfully, new times also meant another thing. That thing was, of course, free engines. Just go to panda3d.org (not a sponsor), download the SDK and the rest is just you and some coding. That's how Autumn Moon's first game, A Vampyre Story was born. And you know what? It wasn't bad. Sure, it was buggy as heck and was abandoned half-way, leaving us with “to be continued”, which ended up being a lie, but it wasn't bad. It looked OK, the main character (a young lady-vampire in denial), worked quite well as a part of comedy duo with her bat companion, the puzzles were logical, while overall package was also quite comfortable. We were able to skip dialogues, useless walks and animations, “press Tab to highlight things” system modern players love so much was there, etc. In other words, despite the fact that it was completely skippable game without a proper ending? It was OK. Now, here comes Ghost Pirates of Vooju Island and good grief, y'all... Good grief... Like A Vampyre Story, Ghost Pirates is made with free Panda 3D engine. And it shows. It has similar visuals, all menus are exactly the same and all in all, it feels like a quick re-skin. Because, spoiler alert, it is. But OK. Why the heck not. As long as there's a proper ending, you can't go wrong with a new game like A Vampyre Story. Right? I mean, a cute and comfortable new point-and-click game. Why not? Let's see why. Ghost Pirates of Vooju Island starts with a cutscene that introduces us to... some random guys. Who ended up together because... reasons. I mean, who are these people? What brought them together and why in the name of all perverted crap out there should we care? It'll get explained. Later. Much later. Why? Again, because reasons. Unfortunately, even after the proper explanations, things won't get much better. We will get the idea about what's going on, but our characters will stay just that – a bunch of boring nobodies. Naturally, it sucks, but OK, OK. It is possible to have decent game without good characters. It is a rare thing to see, but it is possible. Take Tale of a Hero for example. Nobody cared about Olaf. Yet his game was decent. So... does Ghost Pirates game have decent gameplay? Unfortunately, no. The first thing you should know – the puzzles are crap. It's one of those games that give you no choice but to use random things on some other random things in hope something good will happen. A lot of games did that in a past in order to make things harder for a player, but first – messing up logic too much was never a good idea and second – again, it wasn't 90s anymore. Internet was already a thing and this kind of approach just killed the whole motivation for people to play without walkthrough. And to make things worse? Much, much worse? Unlike previous game, you can't skip monologues. Every single line the character says (except those dialogues that give you multiple choices, for whatever reason) you should hear from the beginning till the end. Which turns “let's try using this on that” experience into complete hell. The same line that is supposed to be funny, yet fails miserably (the writing in this game is absolutely terrible and feels like something that comes from that certain friend of yours who think he's very funny)? You'll need to hear it for, like, million times if you'll decide to play fairly. Same goes to walks and animations. Can't skip 'em. Should I remind you how confusing this game can be? Even more so, since we'll control not one, but three characters at the same time. I believe, makers tried to achieve something Gobliiins-like, but, surprise-surprise, they've failed. Instead of being like Gobliiins, Ghost Pirates just wants us to switch from one character to another, while all three will be busy with their own puzzles, which don't concern the others at all. Well, at least in the first part of the game, since later the feature will get abandoned and we'll simply play one hero after another. There's a trick, though. See, while controlling one hero, you can ask the others for help. You'll actually need to do that in order to progress, while the game won't teach you about that feature in any way. Manual? Dunno 'bout physical copy, but digital release doesn't have any. And we are supposed to guess that we can use items on portraits... how exactly? Naturally, that feature adds to long and boring talks too. Like there's a part, in which one hero will troll another by asking him to sing. For three times. Three... f*cking... times. With no way to skip. F*CK! And guess what the game does after that? It crashes. Because yes, it's even more buggy than A Vampyre Story. Is there a way to fix such crashes? Sure. Open config.exe and turn on the windowed mode. It'll probably add some visual bugs, but the game will become playable. Guess what, though? Technical problems won't end there. First – even though the game itself offers us English language support, config is German-only (good luck with Google Translate). And second – after using config, I lost the ability to see cutscenes. Reverting the changes after passing the problematic part didn't help. That's it. Cutscenes were gone for me forever. Sure, since it's not 90s anymore, there's always YouTube, but come on! It is ridiculous! Just how much can one mess up something as simple as point-and-click game?! No matter how you look at it, Ghost Pirates is a game you don't need in your life. It isn't interesting, it isn't funny, it's annoying as heck and it barely works. I forgot to mention, but A Vampyre Story's unique feature that allowed us to turn into a bat was also removed with nothing to replace it. In other words, Ghost Pirates is just that – a stupid, crappy and half-broken point-and-click game with literally nothing to care about. Did I play worse? Kinda. But not much and not that often. Dixi.
As with A Vampyre Story (from the same developer), I cannot get this game to run on Windows 10 (not even with all community guides on moving the game to another folder, renaming .DLL files, installing and using dgVoodoo2, editing the game config files, etc.). As long as this is not solved, my review of the game will remain negative, as I think this should not be sold on Steam. Don't let my number of played hours fool you, btw. Those are from trying to get the game to run and forgetting to close the main.exe program from Windows Task Manager after the game crashes.
This was a very enjoyable experience! I can't believe this game has 'Mixed' reviews. What an underrated gem! The good: * Background artwork is AMAZING. It really brings me back to the golden era of Lucas Arts games, which is no wonder, since some of the Lucas Arts people worked on this game, such as Bill Tiller, one of my gamedev heroes. * Voiceovers are very good, a bit cheesy at times though hehe * A lot of neat jokes and subtle references, Some jokes fall flat but for most I snickered * Love the whole going in and out of ghost modes thing, really opens up some unique gameplay elements I haven't seen used in adventure games before * Liked that you had to interact between the three characters to jointly figure out stuff. I was used to playing sole characters in adventure games so I often forgot to try out this method in the game though The bad: * There are some technical issues, I've experienced a few crashes, but nothing a restart didn't fix. * The most annoying thing is that you can't cancel any voiceovers... Every time you click something, you have to hear the whole thing, and I see how that can explain the low score of the game, it gets to be annoying. But you do get used to it, and it's really not that big of a deal in my opinion, but it would be a better experience if you could skip. Oddly enough, you can skip dialogs when conversing with characters, but not when you interact with the scene... Conclusion: Overall I really enjoyed this game. A few trivial issues keep it from being a truly great game, but if you give it a chance and overlook some of the clunky stuff, you'll find an unpolished diamond underneath! --- PS: I played this game start to finish on Linux using Proton (Debian sid), had no issues! (apart from the crashes but they do occur in Windows too)
Agrr time to raise the anchor you land lubber and aghast ya gaze on 'autumn moons' little strumpet point and click adventure. The commanding coxswain behind this ships wheel is captain/developer Bill Teller infamous for his visual work on 'The Curse of Monkey Island' before abandoning the jolly roger known as 'Lucas Arts'. Alas me matey's. You would think the loot would be in the coffer on this one. But they only seem to be serving dumb down rum on board in comparison to the monkey island fleet. Also on set sale there was some scallywag bug stowaways causing all sorts of scurvy savagery behind the scenes. But those stinkin bilge rats were located and everything was patched up when those wretched wenches were tossed overboard. Unfortunate, the stormy weather reviews had already done quite a job on the sales and this ship became just a still log in the water. Still, hanging from the yardarm I’m trying to get a clearer picture. This vessel is still operational and it's time someone scraped the barnacles off the rudder, hoist the sales and got things moving again with a blow of a good hornpipe. Plot is a bit foggy at first, it’s about a once quiet volcano housing a demon god that's been previously contained due to Vooju spells cast, but dark clouds are looming once again as the volcano seems to be throwing a temper. Three main protagonists straight away fall fowl play to a cruel mutiny orchestrated by Papa doc's treacherous wife Queen Zimbi. Secretly, behind his back while being aided by pirate Green beard and his crew she has been using the power of Vooju to collect an army of mindless zombies, trying to awaken the sleeping demon, preparing plans on how to over throw the pirate council and been erecting warding barriers so that not even the dead or ghosts could stop her. Three immediately fell trap to her spells having their soul’s separated form their bodies. These three are left with no choice than to join forces and try and put a stop to this evil. First there is Papa doc himself a Vooju priest who is an expert on all things Vooju being able to read ancient hieroglyphs. Next there is Jane Starling a female pirate with such a low cut top and endowed with such glowing chests that everyone should treasure. In fact I’m sure many would find it hard to even keep all hands on keyboard when she is around. Lastly there is Blue Belly the comical relief of the game and expert on all things food related. In the first part of the adventure our heroes need to discover a way to reattach their souls to their bodies, they need to locate a ship so they can get off Vooju island and try and find others allies that could help them bring an end to this plan. In the second part of the adventure we learn that it was Green Beards job to attack all these potential allies, using their ghost powers they must put a stop to his attack, join forces and everyone help prevent the resurrection of the demon god. Ramming speed unfortunately is halted by dialogue not being skippable, this causes the hull of the game to drag along scraping all of us with shallow patience. Also several of the puzzles are so cryptic, that they will scar your dignity like a cutlass when you have to scallywag for a walkthrough since no lily livered hornswoggle in game hint system is applicable. With these things placed aside there's no real reason to be sassing the cap'n about a very pretty, now working, completely made up baloney Vooju game not to be taken seriously. Some of the in game curse/spells contain words like 'Orthodontist' and 'Miley Cyrus' and it would be smart to keep your tongue housed where it belongs and your thumb pointed towards the crow’s nest unless you want to feed the fishes YO HO HO. "Ghost Pirates of Vooju Island" - квест от создателя "The Curse of monkey island" и "A Vampyre Story" - Билла Тиллера, что когда-то работал в "Lucas Arts", а потом основал собственную компанию по созданию квестов - "Autumn Moon". Вот ссылка на руссификатор "Ghost Pirates of Vooju Island" - ht tps://questtime. net/rusiks/1489. html (уберите пробелы).
The game would be interesting enough, but it's ruined by waiting. Either because there is some weird black screen right after going to another room, or because you have to watch your character move across a room, or, most annoyingly, because you can't skip any text apparently. Every time you examine something - and you do that a lot - the character will actually speak the text you can read. So far so good, a nice voice-over is always welcome. However, any well designed game should offer the option to SKIP the voice-over. I probably could read the text a dozen times while the character is still droning on about it. As nice as the voices are, after a while I don't need to listen to them every time - especially if it's something I've heard several times already. To confound that problem, the puzzles are not necessarily something you'd call obvious, so you need to try a lot of stuff - and have to listen to the characters over and over again. If you've got lot of patience and time - go ahead, try it. The graphics are quite nice, the voices are alright. It's really mainly the UI that kills it.
