Geo Mythica is a really easy game for me to recommend. It allows for a lot of player choice in almost every aspect of the game. It tells a fun story and has enjoyable combat. I liked the NES style pixel art and music. Included are some educational information which on paper I don't think I would like but it works here and I definitely learned a thing or two during the course of this adventure. Geo Mythica is the perfect length to me with my completion playthrough clocking in at 15 hours on the nose. If you enjoy retro style RPGs then you owe it to yourself to play this one. First off, I would like to admit that I don’t play a lot of JRPGs, nor do I have any nostalgia for NES-style graphics. The reason I decided to give this game a try was because I followed the developer from their previous game. While I can tell the sorts of games it is taking inspiration from, thankfully, Geo Mythica is perfectly capable of standing on its own ideas, where underneath retro-appearances lies a modern, fluid action-RPG that I had a lot of fun with. If I had to make one loose comparison to one JRPG I have played and enjoyed, it would probably be Final Fantasy VII Remake. While visually the games couldn’t be more different, both games will have you fighting monsters with a party of colourful characters through linearly designed dungeons, switching between basic attacks and unique special attacks in real-time combat. There are many areas to explore with people to help and with plenty of side activities. Geo Mythica decides to take what works well in modern RPGs while mixing things up with retro RPGs tropes, such as the world being split up into a world map and individual zones, making travelling between main locations quick and easy. Since the game is using a 2D top-down perspective, you always have a full view of each battle, allowing for more strategic battling. You’ll have to make considerations of enemy positioning, timings, and targeting. The game pauses when opening the menu to cast abilities, which is great considering how frantic many of the battles can get, and the combat shines during the mid-game, striking the perfect balance between freedom to play how you want and challenging battles. Every area introduces new enemies with different abilities, often preventing you from just whaling on them with basic attacks to succeed, preventing me from getting tired of battling while never being required to grind. For the most part the "Recommended" difficulty did not give me too many issues. There are a couple challenge dungeons I chose not to complete. There's a point in the late-late where fights become less about attacking enemies and more about defensively managing your party, and your options for viable strategies start to dry up; needing to heal all the time locks up a party member, enemies attacking quicker and quicker, and fights with 3 or more powerful enemies can make single-target spells feel ineffective. That being said, I only found a few difficulty spikes through the main and non-end-game side stories, and I liked how - similar to the developers’ previous game “The Adventures of Chris” - failure is inconsequential and you're free to experiment without losing progress. Some individual hard fights take on a sort of puzzle quality of how to kill all the enemies before they kill you. But I just felt like the challenge dungeons limited options too much to hold my interest for entire dungeons. You can lower the difficulty if you want to do everything, but I chose not to. As for the story, I liked how most story arcs/quests were less than an hour long, so every play session felt like I’d accomplished something. Moment-to-moment writing is great, doesn't rely on reference humour and I laughed at quite a few of the jokes. In general, I found that the story was at its best when it wasn’t trying to take itself too seriously, and it was always a joyful surprise to see the realistic world combined with more wacky locales, not quite surreal but more low-fantasy. There’s a diverse range of real-world locations that have clearly been depicted with care, and while the graphics stay true to looking like an NES game, there’s enough visual flair in each location to be distinct from each other. It’s a shame that you can’t banter with party members outside of scripted story events, because when the game did get more serious, I felt that I had missed out on conversations that resulted in the characters' change of heart. The game is full of complex characters, and I guess I just wanted to hear more from them. The music is also really nice. There’s a great range of retro-inspired high and low energy tracks that I never got tired of. Overall I had a very enjoyable time with Geo Mythica, and I would recommend it to any fan of action-RPGs even if they’re not familiar with classic JRPGs like me. I had a bug-free and stable experience that took me 17~ hours to complete the main story and all non-post-game side quests. 8/10
One of the more enjoyable games I've played in awhile. (Works on steam deck if it's still not verified)
A pretty good game though the decent pixel art takes a bit to get used too the game feels quite enjoyable and has a pleasant story and decent characters though the late games pacing feels a bit fast.
This game is absolutely phenomenal, and I wouldn't expect anything else from the amazing Chris Guin whose Adventures of Chris game I absolutely loved. There is so much to love in this game: -Fun set up of exploring a map of Earth -Awesome game play that blends RPG elements with real time combat in a way that makes EVERY SINGLE BATTLE a fun experience -An uplifting story with lovable characters (including lovable villains) who are very well written and face real challenges they solve together -GREAT music -Fun mini-games sprinkled throughout as well as unique combat challenges that always leave you switching up your party make-up -Probably the best RPG economy ever created which is a fun aspect in and of itself -Fun Easter egg references to the Adventures of Chris Most of all, it's just fun. It's such a blast to play. Chris is such an amazing guy who deserves all the success in the world. After playing Adventures of Chris and having such a great time, I decided to look into him and see what he was working on. I had this game on my Steam wishlist for over a year now. I'm so glad it's out and that it's even better than I thought it would be. Do yourself and the Indie gaming community a favor and buy this game!
I can only assume the low reviews on awesome games like this is some sort of conspiracy on the part of Big Indie to drive me insane. Well it's not going to work because I'm already insane!! Geo Mythica slaps. It's like a cousin sharing the families of StarTropics and Final Fantasy 12. And when have you ever heard that in your life? Hell, when have you last seen a StarTropics-inspired indie game? If ever? Don't just wait until Infinite Alliance comes out, play Geo Mythica! Learn 4 words of another language! Fight lots of robots! Travel to New Orleans! Discover the spooky secrets of a music shop!
After 100%ing Geo Mythica, I'm thrilled to call it one of my absolute favorite games. It's clear that the dev team is well-versed in JRPGs and what people enjoy about them. It's the perfect length and has the perfect amount of side stuff. The music is great. The graphics are exactly what they aim to be and are done perfectly. The combat is a lot of fun and offers a lot of variety and challenge. Dungeons are nice and short, and puzzles are painless (thank youuu). Dialogue is funny without trying too hard to be funny. All of the characters are a joy and have just the right amount of depth to match the game's tone. Traveling the real world and spending time among different cultures and landmarks is a unique and very neat feature of this game. I have nothing bad to say about this game. I'm hoping Guin Entertainment keeps making more.
Absolutely delightful game. I very much enjoy the aesthetic, and the combat is surprisingly robust. It's simple, but effective in all of its aspects. Just a pleasant RPG, highly recommended.
Update after beating game
What a great game. Really solid story, really great world, just for the pacing, price, and experience you can't do much better. This game deserves a ton of love. Each party member is mechanically very distinct and you can do a lot with your team design. Towards the end magic definitely becomes your most worthwhile game actions, but that's fine. The real-time/turn based fusion you get lends itself to making sure your opponents are crowd controlled while you unload your combos. In that respect, it's actually very cool and you need to start issuing those game actions quickly. If you want, and for a specific side dungeon you can alter your team to make a fairly good physical team but it's a lot more work than meteor dropping with power howl active.
Original Review
I'm I think roughly halfway through the game at this point. Even if at this point the game doesn't get any better, my 5 hours has been such an absolute delight. It's cool playing an RPG in a mostly modern setting. The writing has been pretty solid and not obnoxious. The characters are charming and go through fun development. The 8bit style has been really fun to look at. The RPG and combat elements are nice because fights are fast and dangerous making you rely heavily on crowd control and buffs/debuffs to get trough them. It's really impactful and a decent blend between realtime and turn based. The pacing has been great and I get new things and new mechanics fairly often and going to different places and countries has also been cool. I only have good things to say for this game. I'll probably update the review once I beat the game but this has been cool and I like it a lot. Definitely one of my favorite impulse buys in a while. Also it runs super well on steam deck, that has been all of my playtime so far.
Very much a strong recommend if you enjoy classically styled action rpgs with some modern sensibility, it doesn't really shy away from its inspirations and thankfully you can choose the difficulty you want, cause this game does not mess around with some of the harder encounters. The game otherwise doesn't try to take itself toooooo seriously and really just feels like it's a long lost NES game (and I mean that with the highest praise) Really if you enjoy things like star tropics or mother 1 then you're gonna have a pretty fun time overall!
