Galacticon is a video game with the look and feel of arcade cabinet games from the early 80's in the style of Williams classics: "Defender" or "Joust", with the gameplay of legendary "Jetpac", and with touches of "puzzle".

A mix of Defender, Joust and Killer Queen (economic victory). Straightforward controls. Scoring mechanics that lend to strategic play. Online leaderboards. Cool lore. This game is arcade to the bone!
Introduction Galacticon is a retro arcade inspired game, a mix between Defender and Joust with puzzle mechanics. Capture humans and then fly them back to your ship, reach the boss, defeat him and start over. Gameplay You have a regular fire button and a button to toggle auto-fire on/off. There are power ups to pick up in the form of shields, weapon upgrades, bombs and lives. Gems will just give points. The humans you pick up are placed in the four corners of your ship and are vulnerable. You can deposit them in cages. The more you drop off at once the more points they reward. You get bonus points according to the colours of the humans you put together. You have limited time to collect all humans to fill the cages. Once all the cages are filled you have to transport them back to your ship. This section is different per level, but basically you need to collect as much gems as you can and not get hit. every 8 levels you face a boss and the game loops to the beginning at a higher difficulty. Leaderboard There's only a local leaderboard for Steam but you get a QR code that lets you upload your score to a global cross platform leaderboard. I find it a bit cumbersome to do each time but you need to do it to participate in a contest and it unlocks tips and extras. There are Win10 apps that will read the QR code from your clipboard so you don't have to reach for your mobile all the time. To capture the QR code in your clipboard you can use (the shortcut for) Snip and Sketch. I do really hope a Steam leaderboard will be added because the game is great for score chasing and competing with others but doing so anonymously is not as much fun. More neoclassical arcade goodness! The arena says Joust. The flashing iridescence of the beam weapons and tiny-guy rescue says Defender. Smooth, responsive controls and the fact that you could theoretically play forever make it a prescription for the score-attack crowd or virtually any gamer who wants some instantaneous -- or unexpectedly long -- excitement! If you're a one-and-done type (me most of the time), there's even a boss at the end of the loop! A satirical bite is waiting! The alien federation summons the dread Galacticon to do away with the human menace, but the aliens you rescue are still so obsessed with their stinky ethnic hatreds (which probably define their cultures more than art or architecture) that, if you fail to heed how many blues, reds, and browns you stuff into each rescue pod, the dumb bastards will shoot each other on the way home! I think this game is pretty good!
There is no better Place to Play than Flynn's Arcade
Galacticon, a fantastic Gem and highly addictive Quarter-Pumper, keeps the "Spirit of Arcade" fresh! Come in and Insert Coin to Play!
If you like 80s arcade games, get this! Here are all of the arcade games it reminds me of: Lizard Wizard (flying and shooting horizontally on a single screen), Defender (laser look/sound and rescue), Joust (level and player look), Killer Queen (collecting and depositing items in holes), Blaster (level type changing each round). It has local and global leaderboards (scan on-screen QR code to get on leaderboard) and secrets too. I played it on my arcade cabinet here, and below that is a leaderboard attack video. https://youtu.be/u4d0K-wvLek https://youtu.be/j_s6zQz03sI
It is a great little arcade game. Just the kind that you want to concentrate on and maximize your scores each round to make a good high score. And i suppose that is also the only real con: This thing requires time -> Want to get into top 10 or even top 5? No save function so better get to it. Top spots require a few hours of good game play. Very much doable though so roll up them sleeves and get into it. Cheap good arcade fun. Most recommended for people who are into this. I am very much into this.

We need to do something about these little bugs called humans!" Well, who wouldn't if an entire species was invading all corners of the Galaxy and imprisoning and using other species as slaves? But humans are far more equipped and stronger than all the other species, and the only way to rescue and save the Galaxy is to call upon the all-mighty half-God, half-machine . . . I'll give it to you straight without curves, Galacticon! Galacticon is a pixelated arcade game developed by Radin Game and published by Flynn's Arcade on the 21st of May 2022 on the Steam Platform. The game is also available on Nintendo Switch. What a little beauty this game is! If you like arcade games as I do, don’t miss this one. The nostalgic pixelated graphics and gameplay just threw me back to the 80'S and I was addicted. Each wave consists of eight levels, including a final boss fight. Each level has two phases. The first phase is to rescue three different species. Interestingly, two species (red and blue) are enemies, and the other (brown) is neutral. Within the levels, there are three platforms where one of each species will be moving horizontally and waiting for you to rescue them. There are also three rescue capsules with four free spots each. Your objective is to recover the colourful characters and place them in the capsule. But you have a time limit which will be displayed on the top of the screen in the middle. Next to it, you'll be shown which of the next species will fly in their flying cage. To free them, you have to shoot their flying cage, and then you'll be able to rescue them. However, when you destroy their flying prison, they can only stay the air for a certain time; if you don’t rescue them beforehand, they will fall – SPLAT - and die. To make it more difficult, you'll have human flying units appearing all around the screen, and if they touch any of the characters you are currently rescuing, they'll also die. And if Galacticon is touched, even being half God/half machine, it will also die. You must be mindful of where you position the rescued species inside each capsule. Four of the same colour species is best as you will earn 20K points at the end of the level. Two of the same species in the capsule is fine too, and it will give you 5k points at the end of the level. You can also have three of the same colour if the fourth spot has a neutral brown character placed in it, then you'll receive 10K points. But, if you have three blue and one red character or vice versa in the capsule, the poor lone soul will be shot, and no bonus point will be given at the end of the level. Each level will have different enemies, and when you beat the first wave (eight levels including the boss), the next wave will become more challenging and so on and so forth. But there are a few boosters that you can acquire in the first level phase. They will drop from the top of your screen, so you can upgrade your weapons, armour and get an extra life or extra time. There are also crystals that will drop, but you must pick them up for another booster or crystal to drop again. It is just full-on fun! When all three capsules are occupied, you can move up the Galacticon to the top of your screen to start the second phase, and you must reach Galacticon's main spaceship. On my best run so far, I was able to reach the third wave and get halfway through. Oh boy, that was something! I can assure you that arcade fans will love having this little beauty in their game library ready to go anytime. The pixelated graphics are superb, the gameplay is just amazing, and you also have a little bit of puzzle mechanics. You also have a global leaderboard which allows you to receive additional content when you upload your latest score. Positives: ~~~~~~~ + Fabulous and nostalgic pixelated graphics + Eight different levels, including a boss fight per wave + Difficulty progression increases per wave + Super fun, challenging and addictive + Global leaderboard and extra content can be unlocked + Achievements Negatives: ~~~~~~~~ - No trading cards as yet Fans of 80's Arcade games will be in heaven playing the half-God, half-machine Galacticon. Just brilliant! 9/10 Key provided by the developer/publisher for review purposes. Any opinions expressed are entirely my own! It's insanely entertaining and the graphics are mesmerizing
This was the next best arcade game that we should have had in 1989. I love everything about it.
Absolutely worth it on sale, one of the few games to really nail every bit of the jarvis games from controls to sound to design philosophy.
