«Galactic Delivery»
Galactic Delivery doesn't really try to sell itself as more than it is. It doesn't promise exciting gameplay, and it certainly doesn't have that, and it proclaims relaxing music which it certainly delivers on. However, at the end of the day, a game has to be fun to play and Galactic Delivery just doesn't seem to be able to pull that off.
Design Potential and Not Meeting It
It's strange to me to see a game that seems like it would have such a clear premise try instead to do something that doesn't really fit the general idea that it falls within. I assumed going in that this would be some sort of high score chasing arcade style game that would have bits reminiscent of Crazy Taxi. That would have been a reasonable thing to jump in and play for bits of time with maybe some challenges and leaderboards to keep it exciting. Instead, the developer tried to create a more narrative experience with characters and some rudimentary dialogue that only serves to slow the game down. As I moved forward in the game and encountered repeated dialogue bits that I clamored to skip as fast as possible, I stopped even caring if anyone said anything new because it was never interesting to begin with. It only serves to hinder the flow of a game centered around performing tasks within a time limit.
Mechanical Misses
While the controls are reasonably responsive and the navigation between deliveries relatively straightforward, it seems to miss out on a lot of interactivity. You're either going to be flying straight to a planet or station to deliver something and that just involves you going in a line with no obstacles and pressing the boost button if you feel it's worth using extra fuel. If it's far enough away a portal appears that you have to fly over and hit the space bar to start 'warping' to your destination. There's no feedback or anything on hitting the portal, you just slap space and hope it works. Occasionally, if you're pressing the forward key at the wrong time in the process, you'll cancel the jump and have to click the delivery item again to magically recreate the portal. Then once you're warping, your only way to interact is to snap left or right to one of the three defined lanes dodging asteroids that knock you out of warp and force you to click to open it again. Overall, there's just very little going on. Playing the game with one hand on the keyboard is not only viable but practically all you need to do for 90% of it.
To Be More Than Cheap
Price plays a pretty big role in how I view the value of a game. I've played a nice collection of super cheap games that were a blast and the value obviously was through the roof, but even though the price of Galactic Delivery is low even at its base, I just don't think it's worth it. Sure the soundtrack is great (sounding somewhere between EVE Online and FTL), but a game needs to be fun to be worth playing and Galactic Delivery isn't. If it embraced an arcade styling I'd probably be have a better view of it, and if the game had more and better visual and audio feedback for your actions, that would help too. I even only encountered a single bug of any significance while playing. It's just hard to find the good in a game that gives the player so little to do and only offers repetition in what is actually offered as gameplay. DISCLAIMER: I was sent an early copy of Galactic Delivery by Yak Studios LLC/Warp Path, this review is in no way influenced by receiving Galactic Delivery for free. Galactic Delivery is a top down space delivery sim, it's very basic and has a pretty good soundtrack that is really nice to listen to, a lot of the focus seems to be put on to the music, as you progress through the game, you unlock more tracks and more things to do, like buying from one planet and then selling that to the bazaar that is close to your starting to location. The gameplay isn't anything to shout about, the controls are just WASD, Space and Left Click, but it is a pretty relaxing game to play, yes you're only going backwards and forwards, but the music is just very relaxing, it was really enjoyable to listen to, it took the very basic controls and just made them something you do while you enjoy the music. The art style is pixelart based, so it has a bit of a retro look and it really compliments how basic the game is, it feels like a nod to classic games from when I was a child. As of this review I have played 43 minutes of the game and got to the end of the 7th day (There is only 14 days in this game, with the option to continue delivering after your "Internship" is over) before the game froze on me, I restarted the game and once again, after completing the 7th day, it froze, this was the only bug I spotted during my time playing Galactic Delivery, but this isn't the only issue with the game. One of the mechanics of the game is warping and it's broken, once you select a delivery location a warp appears and you can warp to your next delivery point, but as the game tells you, it's an unsanctioned area that hasn't been clearly from debris, so it's unsafe... however, that is almost entirely not true, just move to one of the 2 edges of the warp tunnel and you're almost 100% safe, with every now and then a piece of debris will be in the lane. The minimap needs a bit of work, as when you're in the warp tunnel, the minimap shows that your ship is in line with hitting debris, but in reality, it won't, so you can just safely stay in the lane until (albeit rarely) a piece is in the same lane as you, just shift lane and back again and you're once again safe. Overall Galactic Delivery is a pretty fun and relaxing game to play, despite the game freezing after completing the 7th day, it left me wanting to play more and unlock some more of the really relaxing music that Galactic Delivery has for you to listen to, it's a very simple game that you'll play while you're bored and/or want to chill. Galactic Delivery is an interesting little game where you have to deliver packages across the galaxy. You can get side missions and try to get a high score while trying to finish your day before the daily deadline or you'll lose some money for undelivered packages. This is an alright little game and I actually like a lot about this but I do feel like it's fairly light on content. You have a 15 day internship at the company and when that is done you can choose to either end the game or continue on (I assume endlessly) delivering packages. The game really feels like it ends after the internship though because everything after that feels like just more of the same. Graphically this is quite nice to look at. The pixel art is very appealing and I really love the art style. The warpping looks great and the few characters you see are also decent. The music is a mix of really nice laid back psy-ambient style music with quite a few different tracks to listen to. It's very relaxing and reminds me a bit of the music in Fez. I would give this a very soft and light recommend - mostly if it's on sale. Everything here is good but there just isn't enough here. I want more of this, I like this game. Playing this was like if you played Sonic The Hedgehog and finished the first level and then the game was over. It was a great first level and lots of fun, I liked it but it just ended and I wanted more. I actually put on Elite Dangerous after playing because I wanted more of this type of thing but in a much larger way. I would love to see this game taken to the next level. If not with updates then a sequel would probably be alright. Everything was good but there needs to be more of everything and more variety in those things.
I had the pleasure of playing this game over the last two weeks. The game's title serves as the perfect forecast to what to expect in the game play. With that said, I personally prefer games with more content and a longer amount of game play. I was hoping for more to do with the random items you can buy from random planets but all and all, it's a short, simple, and sweet game. I have to say the pixel art in this is so beautiful and the soundtrack is very nice and relaxing.
[FIXED]Say no to Sine once about being done early, and you game can't progress because it locks up before he gives you your review for that day.[FIXED] Devs were very quick to fix the issue, since it was my only actual issue with the game I changed my review to positive.
Galactic Delivery is Mediocre For $1.99
Galactic Delivery is what you'd expect from a game as cheap as it is. It's a step above the random flash game ripoffs that somehow end up on Steam, but not by far. This is the sort of game you get an hour of at most if you really push the lack of content that it has. Delivering packages in space with a simple system for managing fuel and money in place isn't that entertaining when the dialogue is dull. If there was a strong story in place with interesting missions, I'm sure it would have kept me playing. However, Galactic Delivery doesn't do enough to keep you interested. Nonetheless, I can't blame the developer, for as cheap a price as it is, you only have so large a budget.
