Reviewed on: 2024/07/23 Score: 4/10 Playtime: About 4 hours for 100% achievements (version 0.5)
Notes:
The developer packed a persistent file and a save-directory with the game's release, this causes 9 achievements to immediately unlock after starting a new game. There are also two crashes which are unresolved at the time of writing. Edit: These issues were fixed within 24h after this review. This is good!
TL;DR:
In the game's own words: "Context is GIVEN, nothing comes with one -" Sadly, context is precisely what this story gives us little of. A distinct lack of character introductions and world building make it difficult for readers to immerse themselves in the world, story, and the life of its main character. This lack of context and framing isn't helped by countless spelling and grammatical errors. "Further Education" describes itself as "choices matter." Except, having looked at the game's code, none of the player's choices are tracked with variables, or lead to unique outcomes. This novel is as kinetic as it gets. The game's graphics are fine, but not impressive. Scenes are composed well, with interesting backgrounds, believable action, and natural posing. Sadly, many renders look grainy, as if they just needed a bit more time to cook in the render engine, or were over-compressed. The state of the game, together with its relatively hefty price tag, makes it impossible for me to recommend it at this time.

Gameplay:
"Further Education" is a story-first visual novel. While the player can make dialog choices, these are purely cosmetic. No choices are tracked, making them meaningless to the overarching story.
Adult:
Edit: At the time of writing the original review, the Steam version had less adult content than the patreon version. This has since been changed, and the two versions are identical. Other adult topics include graphical violence, grief, depression, and other mental health issues.
Visual:
UI: The game's UI is basic, but provides some nice options. Players can pick different fonts, change the font size, and configure a textbox. Though, the preferences screen itself is difficult to read, due to the choice of colors, transparency and its background. Characters: Character design is unique. While the MC is described to be 5'11 (1.8 m), most people are taller or the same height as him. He looks pale and has bloodshot eyes, which is in-line with his mental state, but looks uncanny at times. Renders: Settings, backgrounds, posing, ... are all fine. While I didn't examine every render in detail, no big issues jumped out at me. Many renders do look grainy, as if they were over-compressed or made brighter during post-processing. Animations: There are no animations in "Further Education".
Sound:
Unless you delete the dev's save files before launching, all volumes will be set to 0%. "Further Education" uses music, sounds and ambient noises. They're generally balanced well, and the game sometimes use loudness for effect. Sounds are chosen well and add to the story's atmosphere. I would suggest that the dev re-encodes the file: 'audio/music/Ep5LoungeMusic.mp3', since it made my speakers crackle.
Novel:
The story opens with Flynn, the (renamable) Main Character, organizing a drug deal. He meets with several people, and they go to a location to finish the deal, where they're ambushed by an armed police unit and taken into custody. We learn that Flynn and Elodie were working as undercover cops, and we meet Carmine, his chief, who congratulates him on a job well done. Flynn goes home, where we're hit with his bad state of mind. While trying to contact 'Ma', he hallucinates of 'Runa', the love of his life who disappeared. What happens during this intro, is the story completely bungling up its character introductions and setting. Without context, we're led to believe that Flynn is a criminal, until he isn't. We meet Carmine, his chief, but we only learn later that she's also this 'Ma' he was trying to contact. This happens several times, where people will be called names without any exposition that lets us associate them. Like the 'Ma' example above, Carmine will also be spoken about as 'Red', without anyone calling her that before. With a job well done, Flynn (27), Elodie (22), and Carmine (44), are told to go back to college to study. Except, not really, not yet at least. Instead, they get involved with another case involving drugs, get recruited by the FBI and are whisked away to America where they encounter a secret-ish global justice agency. Throughout all this, Flynn's suffering is shown well, though its effects are flawed. Everyone knows he's hallucinating, yet he's given a gun. He dislikes physical contact, yet all the women in his environment will push themselves onto him with hugs and cuddling. The story and writing, together with his small stature compared to Elodie and Carmine, makes Flynn look like a child. And, instead of Flynn slowly coming to terms with his loss and emotions, it gets replaced with him weirdly romanticizing/sexualizing Carmine, who's alluded to be his biological mother. The story happens in a fictional universe with a very different technological and political landscape. Sadly, this is only paid lip service to. Its concepts are never explored or expanded on. We're just to accept that things are the way they are, including a secret society with agents that are only agents one week per month, and which has connections to every government agency of all membership nations. And, to top it off, this self-described force for good thought it was a good idea to replace three supreme court justices with their own picks (because progress is always good). Though, seeing as they have the mandate to play judge, jury and executioner, it shouldn't be surprising that they're not big on democracy.
Conclusion:
In my opinion, the story lacks structure, and is in desperate need of a skilled proofreader. Why is it set in such a different world, if we're not learning about it? People, organizations, and events appear without framing or introduction, leaving the reader with more questions than answers. This effect is worsened by an excessive amount of spelling and grammatical errors, forcing us to figure out what a line means before we can put it in context. This is the main reason why I can't recommend this game. Its quality just isn't there, certainly not for a price of $12.

Socials Interested in discussing AVN? good game
Love this game cast and story! Thanks
Boring storyline, no proper character introductions. Characters faces look weird (eyes look too small or something).
Very, very different from the previous game - I mean I should've expected it since there's a crashed plane thing and the MC tired/fallen in front of it.
What kind of different? Good different comes to mind, like it's trying to tell me that "I'M REALLY NOT A PORN GAME" while still having some porny things in it. And about the Steam and Patreon versions being different, I'll reach out to the dev and see what's different about it, but since one guy already said that the Steam version doesn't have the spicy stuff that's in the Patreon version, yeah that's a bummer. I don't know which scenes are supposed to be uncensored, but I'm thinking
Elise getting ♥♥♥♥♥♥
. Now for the
story!
Confused, I was confused as in what's going on, like damn police things are just happening left and right. Am I supposed to know about the workings? But that's just the start, it KIND OF explains itself bit by bit (which I like A LOT, but I'm playing a VN so I guess I am gonna have to build up patience). From what I am getting, this is a spy thriller, but futuristic - really mature though.
Special note-
I don't know why only the sex is cut; the MC goes through some REAL ADULT ♥♥♥♥ like loss, grief, shock, violence, and whatnot. This is MUCH MORE adult than sex.
Graphics-
It's pre-rendered and it's SHOT like a movie/TV series which then almost perfectly cuts into POV like other normal VNs. The graphics are nice, nothing extraordinary like some other VNs, but it's nice throughout, not just 1 frame of GODSEND graphics, but consistently nice. Sometimes things can get grainy, however.
Sound/Music
Better than most I've played, some really nice music, great sound effects (gunshots, room tone, etc.), but they crackle sometimes and even go out abruptly.
Characters
I don't know how to describe them but they feel human, like they actually exist with real problems like you and me. However, most of the cast comes off quite stuck up. And yeah, yeah, yeah, I know they're "principled" and all that, but come on, chill the ♥♥♥♥ out once in a while, lol. But I think that's their character. It's hard to describe them because they're constantly evolving/unraveling.
World
At first, it seems like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. It's constantly referencing real-world things and all that but also is futuristic? And then there are made-up organizations? Treaties? Which is fine, by the way. I get it's trying to legitimize itself (and works most of the time), but a simple lore menu would be nice? But it's still on just Episode 5 soooo.
Conclusion-
WAIT, don't get it now. Really WAIT ON IT. The issue mainly is the world and it's a world that's expanding, like peeling an onion or whatever. Rating-
7.5/10

Main selling points-
Emotions World building Characters Music Scale
Main Issues
"Cut" content Pricing World building (as of ep5) Bugs and errors Review Spell checked using ChatGPT, which the dev should've considered at least (sorry :P)
A very well-made and interesting visual novel. Beautiful renders, with very cinematic shots. I was especially immersed with the writing style of the dialogues, and some parts (like with Runa) really moved me. I wouldn't consider it a porn game, although there are some sex scenes. If you approach it as a mature visual novel instead of a porn game, you'll have a blast!
we need chinese
Not sure what this AVN is going for. every character in the game usually looks like they are worried all the time or joking, whats with all the eyebrows furrows? I found myself scanning through the game just looking for someone with a normal facial expression. Also, not sure if the women in this game are supposed to be pretty or sexy but they are not. Also not sure about whos the mom, mother, ma?! Its just very confusing and I found myself clicking away the inane dialog to try and find something interesting to see. It has alot of promise, there are some feels in it like Drifty games but a very poor cousin.
