Fugue

A rather short puzzle game (~2 hours to complete all 60 screens for me) themed around manipulating musical notes (depicted as birds on a power line); upon hitting the 'play' icon, a pointer (another bird with a number attached) flits across the screen playing the notes, with the notes/birds altering the number. If the bird or birds hit the right-hand side of the screen with the correct total, you win. I was very underwhelmed. The 'correct' way to think about this game is to treat the notes as mathematical operators and the solutions are just equivalent to elementary high school algebra, albeit rather finicky. Despite the short playing time, the puzzle progression feels pretty slow (there are maybe four or five new ideas introduced over the course of the game and even then it feels very short) and I found myself thinking 'When does the good stuff start?' It feels like there are a number of more interesting directions this could have gone in; introducing more music theory - with the multiple birds, you could have gone with counterpoint or tried to build chords rather than dischords, or going with the title and creating canons/fugues and the rest. Or the puzzles could have been set up so that the solutions forced pleasing melodies. The basic mechanics for a game of that sort are mostly there, but it's fallen short. I'm hoping that for this to exist, the devs actually attemped something like that, but they couldn't make it work as a game, and just released the parts that did more or less work instead. The alternative suggests a lack of imagination. Oh well. I wanted to like this, but sadly, I don't.

I thought it would be more music based than it was. Very disappointing to find that it's basically just a math puzzle game.

Really enjoyed this. Really liked being able to relax and play around with my understanding of note intervals. Loved the minimalist aesthetic, and all the cool monochromatic bird effects. I wish the game incorporated a bass section as well.

While the core idea to use music as a puzzle is great, it is executed in a rather generic way. The most obvious missed opportunity was not making the solutions pleasing to listen to. I think the game would have been interesting had the developer started from a piece of music that already sounds good, then worked backwards on each puzzle. They could have incorporated the audio of the solution as a hint to what your final answer should sound like. Instead, each piece of music in Fugue is boring and uninteresting. Most answers are just a few scattered notes repeated twice. As for the puzzles themselves, I think that was another missed opportunity. The puzzle mechanics in the game have very little to do with music or music notation. The game consists of math puzzles that are just basic mathematical functions (addition, multiplication, etc.) with sound effects. This is mostly a critique of the math puzzle genre itself, but it makes the game very niche. Math puzzle games are usually too complex for most people, or too basic for most people. For Fugue, it is too simplistic to appeal to most people. Even the last puzzle in the game, while complex, is still primarily made up of addition and subtraction. Fugue is an okay game with a specific audience it will appeal to. I really can't recommend this game, it's entirely math-focused which detracts from any potential it had to reinforce musical concepts and improve sight reading (if that's what you're expecting). Game takes FOREVER to load too. Side note, it was missing files when I purchased it, so the dev had to be contacted before it would even launch. Just not a good all-around experience.

I got this game in a game bundle, and my interest was piqued from the title. However, despite the musical terminology, this is a math-based puzzle game through and through. The other music notational elements are minimal: a 5-line staff as a base; birds act as noteheads with different properties; and there are repeat signs in some puzzles. Although the game's description opens with "make music, chimes, and melodies", there is no incentive to make pretty musical lines to solve the math puzzles, and often the resulting melodies will either be dull and repetitive, or jagged and random. Despite all this, the game's overall aesthetic is nice and relaxing, and it was enjoyable to finish the game. However, I cannot really recommend the game at full price due to its rather short length.

A fun little puzzle game with musical notes, but not much else musically. Has fooled a lot of people into thinking it’s actually a music game, but is really just a simple maths game. Cute, calming and generally pleasant. Worth a shot with a discount. 3.5 Out Of 5
