Much more flawed than 1 and 2. The combat is significantly easier across the board even though it feels mostly the same as before so it ends up more dull and feeling less desperate. The story feels unfocused where the first half of the game is totally different than the second half and the final boss is just unrelated and lame. Decisions made in the story seem like they were either there for cheap shock value or just poorly thought out. I 100 percented Fuga 1 and 2 but this game let me down enough for me to not want to touch it further after I beat it
Finally here, at the end of the series. I blazed through this one faster than both 1 and 2, I was almost unable to put it down over the holidays- it had a vicegrip on my heart and my attention, and even after that I don't know that I can actually put into words how I feel about this. I could repeat what I've said about 2 and 1. Gorgeous art, beautiful music, and fantastic writing. A gameplay loop that's almost perfectly tight and evolves on its predecessor in captivating, entertaining, and challenging ways. Characters that I love beyond reason, that made me laugh, and cry, that I didn't want to say goodbye to by the end. Everything I ever asked for after playing Fuga 1, delivered upon in droves, and even more beyond that. I could go on and on about all of it in minute detail for hours, I could write a damn novel about it, and I probably still couldn't really explain my feelings completely. The truth about Fuga 3 is that art like this is a rarity, and a treasure. It's something that I think will leave a mark on me emotionally, and creatively, forever. It's transmogrified the way I think about writing, about illustration, about designing characters, and mechanics, and everything else about RPGs. In the wake of playing these games I feel like I can see so much more than I could before about my own ambitions, my own journey in game development and art- about what I can achieve, and how much I can dream, how much I have to learn. I feel like I've been shown just how much passion and love you can pour into something. That you don't have to compromise on what matters. I feel like I've been set free, and that I'll be all the better for it. Fuga 3 has come the closest to perfection out of any game I've ever played, and only deeply rooted nostalgia is preventing it from being my number 1 pick out of anything. The fact that CC2 clearly intends to continue this story makes me unbearably happy. It puts me on the verge of tears that I can go back to the world of Little Tail Bronx in the future, because I'm ready to cry again.
I would only recommend this if you really wanted to see how the trilogy ends, even then I would recommend Fast Mode. The overall gameplay felt incredibly sluggish mostly from the battle progression fundamentally being the same, with QoL and extra flavoured skills being sprinkled in. Thankfully this is addressed with the Fast Mode option... which auto-clears normal battles and grants you a "win" cannon with no way to switch back whenever (that was my first complaint, but after switching and playing through from ch. 6 my opinion has changed). Interaction wise, it's the same deal. You get most of your character moments through link events while the main story is effectively gatekept by the Marzipan agenda. With how the link events I've seen before NG+ are portrayed, seemingly having ignored any character development outside of the main story of FUGA 1 & 2 (i.e Boron's dieting plan with Hanna that was EXPLORED in FUGA 1 and gets revisited in FUGA 3 in the same context), the children don't feel alive and the only thing that's keeping me in liking them are the cutesy design. The good part of this game was the story. It's a good send-off to the trilogy and A LOT happens in this game compared to the two previous installments. I think I'm suppose to like the story and how the finale of their struggles play out, but I'm having a bit of a shock moment after finishing the game.
Admittedly, 2, while fun, kind of felt like a stretched out DLC. This, however... holy, it goes and goes and GOES. Feels practically like three games in one, being an ultimate resolution to everything, then more, then ultimate resolution to THAT, and so far beyond.
Stepping out of Fuga: Melodies of Steel 2 with a cheeriness in my heart and a justified fear that the everything in the story was about to hit the fan, I immediately ventured into the third and final Fuga game to see this trilogy to its proper conclusion. And my god, the Fuga trilogy might be my favourite set of games I have played this year, for the love and heart that the develops have put in this game make me feel all giddy. Like the previous two games, Fuga 3 is phenomenal and I cannot recommend it enough. Of course, I will preface this review by saying: I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU PLAY THE PREVIOUS TWO GAMES IN ORDER. The game does provide a feature to summarize and recap the events of those games on the main menu, but you rob yourself of the emotional involvement and smaller details that come attached with the other games. A demo is available to test the waters and see if the games mesh with you, but don't do yourself a disserve by playing the games out of order. Still, if you ARE jumping in for the first time, you have a lot to look forward to and I think you will enjoy what is presented here. (Note: this will be a very long one! I have a lot to say :0) Much like Fuga 2, you get special clear rewards for having save data from the first two games! Fuga 1 only gave a set of character outfits, while having the true ending of Fuga 2 gives a different set of outfits, a small set of items to help kickstart your adventure, the jukebox to change music during Intermissions, and a cute little commemorative photo to remind you of all the great times before the kids rush in to risk their lives against overpowered militant forces. I expected there to be clear bonuses after the second game had them, but it just makes me feel all happy. Small stuff like that is nice, rewarding those who have stuck out this series to its conclusion. AND! I must always take a brief moment to compliment the visual art and music of this series, as it is all extremely well-crafted. In fact, the artists went off the walls and pumped out way more of... everything! From imposing full art to even just more variety in background CGs and minor characters, they worked their asses off for this game. The music is fantastic, and gets you amped or depressed with ease. It blows Fuga 2 out of the water with all this content. Thank you, CyberConnect2 for all your effort! These games are always so lovingly created, and that is a big contributor of why I love them so much. Compared to the previous two entries in the Fuga series which had very similar frameworks, Fuga 3 made some bigger strides to shake up the combat game. The in-between stuff of riding through areas and carefully assessing risks and rewards on different paths is the same, and the general gameplay of hitting weaknesses to delay enemies still exist, but the battles have some more complexity to them that make them... way easier. The biggest offender is the weakness combo system, which allows you to build increasing damage gains every time you hit a token to delay an enemy. This can compound quickly, dealing higher and higher damage. I was able to shred the second boss with no effort by utilizing this system with Kyle's Sharp Bolt (which does increasing damage for each armor point an enemy has). I like the idea in theory but it feels too strong and overtuned. They also added some extra moves that work in tandem with weakness combos, such as heals that scale depending on how high it is. Another big change (and one that I'm not sure I like) is to link skills, which are now "burst skills." The main difference is that, upon the meter being filled, they autofire without any ability to store them. I know the assist attack (which calls in a character for aid) is basically the new version of the link attack, but now that brings the issue of the player having way too many tools to deal with every scenario. Unfortunately, while I think the new gameplay systems are cool and satisfying to use, they harmed my overall experience slightly by making the game too easy. Like its predecessors before it, Fuga 3 throws you right into the action. A series staple at this point. And man, this cold open might have been the strongest of them all. Its confusing, its jarring, and its filled with sorrow. Especially with two games of history under my belt, seeing what happens to the cast within the first hour is gut-wrenching. You still get context so you're not fully left in the dark, but you're not given enough to understand fully why everything is going on. All you get is a heart helping of despair before you are handed the reins and told to keep going. And one thing that the story gets right is the scale and setting. Where the previous two games were set in the ever-evolving land of Gasco, Fuga 3 switches things up and allows the player to explore Berman. Not just on the ground, but in the skies as well. The amount of art made really helps sell Berman as a place that is really lived in, and not just a racist militant force. And the set-up of the story that leads to the crew entering Berman I think is well done too. A elite unit of soldiers take Malt, the main character, and whisk him away into the heart of Berman. Meanwhile, the leader of Berman is planning a full-scale invasion, with their powers only amplified from previous excursions. This game sets up a perfect sense of both scale and finality, setting up to stop this warfare problem once and for all. You can see how the Bermans have been biding their time, crafting up bigger and stronger weapons to ensure that Gasco has no chance of fighting back (of course, there is an incongruency here as the gameplay is way easier than before). These parts are done exceptionally well, and they set my expectations high. But... As much as it upsets me to say, as I loved Fuga 2's story to death, I feel that Fuga 3's story has moments where things feel wrong or out of focus. I understand and support the necessity of a third game in the trilogy, as there are many questions left unanswered and different plot threads that were begging to be tied off. By all accounts, a final game to resolve everything left should have been a home run! Especially in relations to the Berman Empire, who had been mostly untouched in the first two games. Obviously, it makes sense that the ambition to raid and lay stake in foreign land would not die after the first game, after one ringleader is removed from play. However, I have some complains. Mostly in relation to new characters being bland and uninteresting (Crimson Knights), and the return of some older characters that should have frankly stayed gone (Blutwurst). Or even just lazily reintroducing some crew members from the previous games in a way that feels contrived (Wappa). This part wasn't much of a problem in Fuga 2, but I feel Fuga 3 only exacerbated the issue of Malt (and now Mei) having a higher degree of importance over the rest of the cast. Even though I feel the Taranis crew do feel more powerful and developed (especially when you factor in their ability to use leader skills in combat), they still feel a league below Malt and Mei. It's a little sad, to be frank. To be clear, I do not hate the story presented here, and I was glad to have one more game with these characters I've grown to love. I just wish it could have been handled a little cleaner at points. Even with my complains, I loved my time here. These characters mean so much to me, and it pains me that I will eventually have to move on. Even if the gameplay is leagues easier than before, the added complexities and systems are super fun to mess around with. And there is nothing wrong with experimentation like that. If you liked the first two, please buy Fuga 3 and support the devs. They did a great job. Thank you, CyberConnect2!
A satisfying conclusion to a wonderful trilogy that improves upon its predecessors in ways that keep it fresh even when I already would have come back for just more of what came before. Visually wonderful, narratively gripping, tactically incredibly satisfying to play.
Gameplay mechanics are greatly improved compared to the second entry, with several new systems added. While the previous game punished the player for not thinking ahead, this one rewards planning to the point where the game feels easy but very satisfying. The game also features an interesting NG+ system that lets you replay specific parts of the story to unlock content that was not possible to see during the first run, instead of forcing you to replay the entire game. I highly recommend exploring everything the game has to offer. The writing is slightly better as well. The story brings back some of the darker themes from the first game, which I really appreciated. However, I did not enjoy the second half of the story as much as I hoped. It is not bad by any means, but it did not leave a strong impression. Overall, I really enjoyed the Fuga trilogy, especially its art direction and music.
