After playing through both Frogun games this one is by far the better one. Mechanics are way more refined and considerably less clunky than the first whilst introducing new mechanics that add a lot to the game and enhance it so much. The levels felt really fun and interesting to play in and while it is smaller than the first game "Quality over quantity" really shines through. I recommend both games, but this one deserves more recognition and praise.
I`m not one to leave reviews, much less negative (my first one?) but this one has pissed me off too much haha I enjoyed the first game quite a lot, just bought both one week ago and I have jumped straight to this after finishing the first one. Two problems, that together become worse: 1. The camera isn't free anymore. in the first one measuring distance / heights could be difficult already, but you could move the camera to understand what you were trying to jump to. The now fixed / on rails camera doesn't allow you to do that. There's visually no difference between a platform that is a little bit up / a little bit further, and that's the difference between hoping on it or simply falling and dying. 2. Second, the new moves make things worse. Now you can also double jump, jump from the hook, etc. But since you can't read distance nor height properly, you will be trying to guess what kind of move is the good one to reach the other side. And probably fail constantly. Just frustrating bad design that improves nothing and instead worsens the bad from the first game. The level design itself doesn't give a crap about this problems and constantly throws sections when the camera is far from ideal, even though the levels themselves seem to be simpler than the ones from the first game. Also, some of the new moves like the jump from swinging on a pole or the jump from the hook feel totally unnatural, as they follow a weird triangular abrupt trajectory (instead of the parabola the regular jump follows) that personally doesn't feel good nor fun. Another thing, since they added the double jump to the same button as the regular jump, the game doesn`t allow you to choose how much you want to bounce when jumping on enemies or mushrooms, and opts for forcing a high jump, which again, doesn't feel great. And this time when I've tried to play with my gamepad (As I've done from the beginning) the game decided to randomly activate the second player and the game pad moves BOTH characters. I've tried to restart and didn't solve it, and there's no option to force single player anywhere, so well, there's that. Two characters bumping with each other, the camera tries to follow both and gets worse than it was. Honestly, if it randomly doesn`t get solved it is just unplayable as it is. I was pretty excited to play this but is just a mess. If you are interested in this, go after the first one instead!
This Encore felt like it was called by the backstage rather than the audience
As someone that really enjoyed the first game, I was really disappointed with this follow-up. Although this is just more of Frogun 1 if you loved that as well, it also felt like a massive downgrade by comparison. The biggest problem I had was the terrible camera. In Frogun 1, the camera could be controlled freely with the right stick allowing you to give yourself the perspective that works best for you so depth perception was rarely a problem. Here, the camera is entirely automatic and is a massive downgrade. In several cases, these camera angles mess with depth perception making it difficult to see where you are in relation to the environment around you. This also makes the drop shadows, a very useful feature from the first game, unhelpful here. There were times where I felt like I was directly adjacent to a moving platform only to be either slightly to the left or right, which was hard to tell due to the terrible positioning of the camera, making me miss jumps that would've been very easy to make with the manual camera from the first game. Depth perception was never a problem in any of the Crash Bandicoot games despite also using a fixed camera, yet it's a consistent issue in this game. This game has a 2 player local co-op which I haven't tried, but I couldn't imagine this being a fun game to play with a friend especially given that both players share the same screen which has never been a fun experience for 3D platformers. I don't feel like this was really designed for co-op at all, as I never felt like I was missing out on anything playing solo. This may also explain the automatic camera that this game uses as it had to work with same screen co-op in mind, but this also ruins the solo experience. The one new addition to your moveset is a double jump, which I also find hard to appreciate. Frogun 1 was cleverly built to utilise the frog grappling gun for platforming and taking shortcuts, but a lot of that can be done with the double jump in this game, which for me, takes away a lot of what made the original stand out in the first place and feels more like a traditional platformer by comparison. Time Trials make a return here, but I found these to be way easier than they were in the first game. Time saving shortcuts were easier to take, and record times are a bit more generous with only a few levels that gave me a hard time. The completion requirements for every level are the same as Frogun 1, including no death runs and collecting all coins in one run, and the shorter level length made these a lot easier as well. There's also a lot less level variety. Frogun 1 had way more biomes that felt more distinct from each other, unlike here where they all started to blend in about halfway through. The rival races are gone entirely without anything else to replace them. The post-game content is also very lacking, with only 1 long final level as opposed to several tougher levels, even if some of those were just a boss rush, which is also nowhere to be found here. The in-game economy feels broken, as well. While I do appreciate the developers for trying to address one issue the original game had, that being how much grinding you had to do to buy everything which was required for some of the achievements, this game has the exact opposite problem, that being by the time I finished the game I ended up with so many extra coins with absolutely nothing to spend them on making them a lot less valuable. If you ask me, that's worse. You're also getting a lot less content with this one. Despite costing around the same price, this game features about less than half of the levels than the original game and I was able to fully 100% the entire game in about a quarter of the time. At the time of writing this review, Frogun 1 is actually on sale for cheaper meaning you're basically paying more money for less content. It's not even a matter of quality over quantity, either, as the first game was far superior on both accounts. This game tries to be both a sequel and expansion, but doesn't really succeed at either if you ask me. It's far too expensive to be a proper expansion, especially for the amount of content you're getting with it, and I'd feel ripped off if this were to be actual DLC for the original considering what you're getting here. As a sequel it barely does anything the first game didn't already do, while also doing many of its ideas worse and doesn't really feel like a fresh new experience in any way. It's hard to recommend this one, even on discount, considering how much better value for your money you're getting with the original and being a far better game than this. Long story short, I'd recommend that you save your money and just buy this instead: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1575470/Frogun/
Game ends with the heroes enslaving the villain and forcing him to repair all the damage he did, then teaching him the power of friendship 10/10 no notes
A silly lil goofy game where you use a gun (which is actually a frog) to platform your way around level at breakneck speeds. 80% of the time you will not hit what you are aiming for and be yoinked in a random direction. The other 20% of the time you will be so shocked you hit your target you will mess up the follow up. Which makes it very fun for when you actually do master the movement.
4/10 + hats + double jump - janky hitboxs. - cant use 2nd double jump in time if you walk off the edge of the level to get back up - very few checkpoints, not that big of a deal cause the levels are really short - very few sound effects - plays like a 2d platformer turned 3 with lots of jumps to single block spaces + amount of times i died to enemy's or bosses 0.000 or even spikes - amount of times i miss judged a jump and fell off the map, touched water once, or missed frog lick by 3 degrees and fell to my death 200+ + local co-op - really short, only like 21 levels. can finish the game in one sitting
Actually enjoyed it more than the first. The camera can be annoying in the fixed perspective, but I actually had less trouble with it since its overhead so gives you a better sense of distance. The auto aiming can be finnicky when you want to change direction and shoot your grab again. Also you can't change controls which is dumb. Theres other dumb rules like you cant double jump then use your grab for no apparent reason. Also the girl still does the low jump and falls SUPER fast in a janky way, especially if trying to run off a platforming and jump, as instead you'll just fall before you jump. The added double jump fixes a lot of the issues of last game platforming. Overall the game was decent, boss fights are somewhat tough but fair if you learn the patterns. It's also a good deal shorter than the first one. I had some fun with it and consider it an upgrade from the first, but still not great or anything. 7/10.
Frogun Encore is a cute little 3D platformer with a vibrant retro aesthetic and some really nice movement. You play as Renata, a little girl, with a frog gun as a grappling hook. With the frog gun, you're able to double jump and chain grapples as you progress through each level. The levels and areas have different themes, and you're mainly trying to defeat flies and gather various collectibles. The levels are pretty short (besides the final level), but if you want to be a completionist, speedrunning the levels can take a bit if you're still adapting to the controls. Personally, I'm not a speedrunner but I did manage to get under the recommended times for all of the levels and even hit some of the master time thresholds. It's a brief but very cute game and it can be a fun playthrough if you're looking to kill some time!
