This version of the game was censored by the guilty-minded puritans at Carpe Fulgur, and it also lacks the additions such as full voice acting that were added to the Japanese version, nor does it have the patches updating it to improve compatibility with modern systems since the initial release.
Something about the atmosphere of this game is truly special. It perfectly evokes that nostalgic feeling of innocent childhood, the dreams of being a young kid and going out on adventures, and returning home safely each night. A brutal game with lovely visuals, animation, music and writing. Such a shame that we're unlikely to see a sequel.
EDIT:
It appears that the Japanese release of this game, self-published by Lizsoft, has received an English update just a few days ago! The old version apparently doesn't run well on new hardware (I experienced no issues), but because the new version is getting support while this isn't, it's recommended to get that instead: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1381770/_/
One of my all-time favourites. Miss you, Carpe Fulgur. Miss you, Lizsoft.
Very adorable action RPG if a bit grindy. The gameplay is similar to stuff like Astlibra, or - if we want to go really retro - Zelda 2, essentially sidescrolling hack&slash where you gain exp and currency that are then used to upgrade your characters. Combat actually takes a while to get used to with having to link directional strikes into combos and enemies pretty much reading your inputs and generally having better range than you it can be pretty challenging early on. Later when you have your AI party members around it's a bit easier but you still have to grind quite a bit to keep up with the enemy strength and equipment prices. The story is your rather standard magical school trope with our girl trying to fit in, make friends and resolve mysteries, but it's told well, characters are well rounded, have arcs and the overall presentation is very cute. Yes the story ends in a cliffhanger, or rather a big sequel hook but the most important plot points are resolved at the end so it's still worth playing even if we'll never get a continuation of this tale. Game is quite dated on technical standpoint and I had a bit of trouble running it on Linux machine, had to remap D-pad to act as a left stick because otherwise it would not work, had to use GE 6.21 to run it or it would either have no music or crash but other than that it's playable from beginning to end. If you like action RPGs, can stand the grind or know your ways around it *cough*memoryeditor*cough* and are into cute & funny games its definitely worth playing.
The game was too broken to be properly playable for me. The game did still start, but it became pretty clear that I would never be finishing a game in such a state Issues I encountered: - Very low and rapidly changing FPS - Switching to any other application completely glitches the game, causing progress loss - No/mediocre controller support The gameplay itself didn't feel great either, as the main character moved in a somewhat unresponsive way, making the combat feel sluggish.
2D platformer RPG with a saccharine anime aesthetic. Runs extremely poorly, controller support is almost completely broken, movement and combat are slippery and clunky, and the game fatally breaks if you dare to alt-tab. Is there a good game underneath? Who knows -- but I’m not wasting any more of my time trying to find out.
