A pretty short but solid metroidvania that rewards you if you pay attention because you need to backtrack a lot and with the floaty controls is best to remember where to go rather than wander around

The overlooked metroidvania is one of my favorites. I played it to the end over a few days. Not only is it worth playing, but it's also often on sale.
forma.8 is a thoughtfully designed indie exploration game that places atmosphere, discovery, and restraint above spectacle or narrative excess. Developed and published by MixedBag Srl, it casts the player as a small autonomous probe marooned on an alien planet after a disastrous mission goes wrong. Cut off from allies and operating with limited functionality, the probe’s task is to traverse a vast and unfamiliar world in search of a powerful energy source, slowly uncovering what happened to its companions and what secrets the planet itself holds. Rather than telling this story outright, the game relies on visual cues, environmental details, and subtle transitions to communicate meaning, creating an experience that feels quiet, mysterious, and introspective. The alien world of forma.8 is its strongest asset. The environments are layered and expansive, blending 2D gameplay with a sense of depth that makes caves, ruins, and open spaces feel larger than they initially appear. Colors shift between muted earth tones and striking bursts of light, suggesting ancient technology and long-forgotten ecosystems. There is a constant sense that this planet existed long before the player arrived and will continue to exist long after the journey ends. This feeling is reinforced by the audio design, where ambient sounds and a restrained musical score underscore both the loneliness of the probe and the quiet beauty of exploration. Silence is used deliberately, making moments of sound or danger stand out more sharply. Gameplay follows the familiar structure of a Metroidvania, but with a slower, more deliberate rhythm. Movement is based on momentum rather than tight, instant responsiveness, giving the probe a drifting, almost weightless feel. At first this can be disorienting, as precise control requires patience and anticipation, but over time it becomes one of the game’s defining traits. Navigation feels less like running through corridors and more like piloting a fragile machine through hostile terrain. Progress is tied to finding upgrades left behind by other probes, each new ability opening previously inaccessible areas and subtly changing how you approach both movement and combat. Exploration in forma.8 is largely unguided, and the game offers minimal direction beyond broad objectives. There are long stretches where the player must rely on memory, observation, and intuition to determine where to go next. This lack of hand-holding can be challenging, especially when backtracking through interconnected areas becomes necessary, but it also reinforces the feeling of being truly lost on an alien world. When you finally stumble upon a new biome, ability, or significant location, the sense of discovery feels genuine rather than scripted. The game rewards curiosity and persistence rather than speed or efficiency. Combat is relatively simple but closely tied to the game’s movement mechanics. Enemies are often more threatening because of the environment and your limited maneuverability than because of complex attack patterns. Bombs, energy bursts, and defensive abilities must be used carefully, especially in confined spaces where momentum can work against you. Encounters are not constant, allowing exploration to remain the primary focus, but when danger appears it demands attention and control. Checkpoints are present but spaced far enough apart to make mistakes meaningful without becoming overly punishing. What ultimately defines forma.8 is its commitment to cohesion. Every element, from visual style and sound design to pacing and mechanics, serves the same overarching mood of quiet exploration and existential solitude. It is not a game that aims to impress through sheer content volume or dramatic storytelling twists. Instead, it invites players to slow down, observe, and immerse themselves in an unfamiliar world at their own pace. This approach will not resonate with everyone, particularly those who prefer constant direction or fast-paced action, but for players who appreciate atmospheric exploration and subtle worldbuilding, forma.8 delivers a memorable and carefully crafted journey that lingers long after it ends. Rating: 6/10

Beautiful graphics, intuitive gameplay and a moving subliminal story all paired with challenging puzzles and enemies all make for one of the best indie games I've ever played.
I was recommended this game by a friend so I waited for it to get better but it just didn't. There are some really good ideas in there but it's really boring. Passable in terms of art but the exact opposite in terms of gameplay. The exploration is somewhat but it just takes too long to get from one interesting thing to another.
