About

Folly Of The Wizards is a comedic 2D roguelike action game that puts you in the shoes of a clumsy wizard apprentice in a whacky wizarding cult. Explore procedurally generated dungeons, learn unpredictable spells, and battle bizarre enemies—all while trying (and often failing) to save the world from a demon invasion.

Choose from four wizards each with their strengths, weaknesses, and spellcasting quirks. Success demands more than just brute force; you’ll need quick reflexes, clever thinking, and a touch of luck to survive. Keep your wits about you and make the most of the resources bestowed upon you, and you will be fine… probably.
In Folly of the Wizards, your social skills are just as important as your wizardry abilities. Will you befriend the elite wizards and gain powerful allies, or will you stand up against them and face their wrath? With every decision and conversation, you can shape your relationships and alter the course of your adventure.

Each run, build your wizard from a potential pool of 130 relics, tomes and scrolls. Relics provide passive buffs and augments, tomes alter the elemental damage of your basic attacks, and scrolls grant access to powerful spell cooldowns. Keep your eyes peeled for unique interactions and combinations of these boons to reach new levels of power.
In order to repel the demonic invasion, you must ascend through 5 floors from a possible 9 biomes. Every time you will be tested by one of the 22 unique bosses depending on the biome and the affinity choices you have made along the way.

Refunded. I was drawn in by the visual style. This is the highlight of the game. The character and enemy artwork is nice and the spell effects are well done. Folly of the Wizards is like a side scrolling Binding of Isaac, but I don't feel like it brings the same quality. The opening cinematic has rhyming dialogue that is so bad. Like it was written by a kid in grade school bad. This was my first clue. The sound effects are utterly awful. They remind me of low quality flash games of yore. When you get a new item it is SO LOUD for no reason. The shooting sound is a really cheap SFX that you will be hearing constantly. Obstacles are hard to see. There's a faint red aura around them, but otherwise they blend into the background. Each room is really basic and boring. Combat feels annoying because you're constantly maneuvering around platforms that block your shots. Numerous times I got stuck in a room and couldn't figure out why I couldn't leave. The game wanted me to talk to the NPC in the room without telling me I had to. At least I presume that's what they wanted, because after talking to the NPC I could finally exit. The real nail in the coffin for me was I kept getting upgrades, but they did that cryptic Binding of Isaac crap where they don't tell you what it actually does. After getting a couple of upgrades and having no idea what they did, I turned the game off and decided to refund. I never felt like my character was improving or changing much. The game could also really use a teleport system like Enter the Gungeon. The map is very similar to Binding of Isaac where you have to manually backtrack to rooms. For some reason I don't mind it that much in BoI, but in this game it felt annoying to navigate. Something about having to platform to the specific door you need feels more tedious. I feel like there might be something here, but the asking price of $30 is way too steep. Please take my review with a grain of salt. I did not play enough to give a full review, but I did not want to after seeing the quality of the game compared to the price.
⭐ “A Fever Dream of Wizards, Cats, and Fat Drunk EDM Unicorns” Folly of the Wizards feels like if Hollow Knight went to a rave and learned black magic. Every run throws you into a gorgeous, dungeon that shifts and mutates each time. You’ll meet a vampire witch named Verana who’s somehow both terrifying and charming, a Soul King named Blarn who talks like he owns the afterlife (he might), and my personal favorite — Larn, the adorable cat shopkeeper He may Ask me "What Are You Buying?" every time I enter his Shop at least in my Mind. The spellcasting starts simple, but by your third or fourth run you’re chaining chaos like a magical psychopath, and it’s glorious. The combat’s fast, floaty, and just the right amount of reckless. One moment you’re tactically dodging through monsters — the next, you’re laughing because a fat Drunk EDM unicorn just body-slammed you into next week. The art style? Stunning. Think Hollow Knight meets Saturday morning fever dream — detailed but playful, dark but somehow cozy. If you like roguelikes that don’t take themselves too seriously but still reward good instincts, this game’s worth every minute. It’s fun, weird, beautiful, and totally self-aware. Come for the magic, stay for the cat. 🧙♂️🐈⬛✨ Wesception Approved. TLDR Great Roguelike, Fat Drunk EDM unicorns, Verana Wants to suck you Dry, If you Die, Its Probably YOUR FAULT.
Liking it so far! Feels like a cross-up between Binding Of Isaac's roguelike-ness and Hollow Knight's combat

I love the whimsical characters, whimsical items and the clean art style, it's the definitely the strongest point for me. The narrated intro when the game starts is a really nice touch, too. I don't have much experience with roguelikes, so I'm still getting my bearings even 7h in, making more conscious choices on each run, but I'm definitely having fun exploring the affinity system, the different relics, biomes and bosses. I haven't experimented much with the spell books yet, I haven't held them for long, but I'll get there.

Challenging, beautiful and fun, if you don't mind to start over a few times. Every run felt a new experience if you take on different ways, spells and items. The celestial ambience and the cute art give the game a great and enjoyable visual. It got me hooked and fighting over and over to find new scenarios.
It's unforgiving tbh. I played 6 hours, almost got to the last stage and still died. The variety of attacks or spells feels weak, the movement and animation is wonky... and I didn't feel the replay value worth it. I would say the ART STYLE is the only great thing about the game. I am a fan of wizards and magic but this was a letdown :(
