4/10 combat, dice just slow everything down i hate RNG games - no undo on movement and your gonna miss click a lot trying to click around allies - dice.... you can loose any level at any point with rolls - need a 10 or higher to open door, i used 13 20 sided dice rolls and had almost none for the rest of the game.... - cant skip scenes - crashed and had to watch 4 minutes of scenes again - massive crew. keep leveling people up and never being able to use those people. half my people dont even have weapons of any kind - npc's models glich when walking over things, dead bodies mostly - get stuck when walking around things, minor pathing problem
The combat system is complicated and confusing. I tried to carefully study the tutorial but found the text too small and blurred to read.
This game is characterized by the wasted potential. I was excited for a grounded pirate story with an interesting combat but the story just had to slip into supernatural in the end with basically every feature being clunky. Shame. It looks great at least and runs well on steamdeck. The combat was over-complicated while nothing was explained well. It had a lot of potential but it ended up an unfulfilling experience.
If you played any of the "Expeditions" series this will will remind you of it. Exploration is different and on a smaller scale. The combat system is well done in my opinion, ONCE YOU READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!!! I will criticise the lack of voice acting. It only occurs in cut scenes, and there are a lot of little bits of written dialogue on screen that are hard to catch. It is also SHORT (only about 10 ish hours of gameplay.) Even then, somehow I manged to not recruit the full compliment of crew member, so I feel like I missed out on some features. Lastly, it is yet ANOTHER Pirate game that forces into its plot supernatural elements with witches and such playing key roles. (I am dying for a realistic, gritty, AAA pirate game....) But all in all it is a good game.
This game was not good at all, and it's sad because it looked cool. I like pirates and the comic book style seemed really neat. Unfortunately it had a lot of problems. Firstly, the battle system is incomprehensible. Lots of weird dice get rolled, God alone knows what they mean, but the game tells you if you hit or not. The most fun thing to do in a battle was roll a barrel at a dude. Secondly, there's no active map and no quest indicators, so good luck keeping track of where you are, or where you're supposed to go. You can spend lots of time stumbling around areas in this game without having the faintest clue of whether you've been there before or where you can go to progress the story or side quests. Thirdly, the only save system in this game is autosave, so no save scumming, so if you mess up a dialogue or miss some secret, you have to restart the entire game from the beginning to redo it. How long is this game meant to be? I'm sorry for not correctly guessing the perfect dialogue every time I spoke to a character. There was one moment where the main character is at some kind of gunshop and says he has a plan, you hide in a courtyard and hear a conversation, it's never clear what his plan was, and there's a locked door nearby you can try to unlock, but the skill roll requires a roll of 20 on a d20. I spent all my rerolls trying to get it and never hit a 20, so I guess I just don't get to see what fun stuff might have been behind the door. At one point I walked to every place I could think of in town, trying to do sidequests, but I never ran into all the people I was supposed to, and ending up advancing the game without getting all the stuff. I had no idea what to do. So the ideal way to play this game is to look up a detailed guide and follow it exactly word for word, and never really make any decisions or play it for yourself. It's like the developer had this idea: "Players don't like handholding or modern conveniences, they really just want to vibe with the atmosphere of the game, so I'll make sure not to make the game convenient in any way at all." Well, congrats, you made an unplayable pile of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I regret that I spent money on this, and wish I could get it back. You could easily fix this by throwing in an active map, quest markers, and the ability to save the game at any point, but I guess games being fun violates your deeply held principles. Don't bother making a second game, nobody would trust you enough to try it.
Good game, for a small dev team. Taking into account the small team, things are very unbalanced: Story is fine, feels very piratey. I did not understand all of it, but it's a good enough backdrop to the game. Environments are quite stunning. Detailed and varied. City, jungle, caribbean island, forgotten temple... Impressive ! Gameplay is good also. Combat rules are interesting, some new stuff that is not so very usual, but felt nice. Level progression, although limited, feels satisfying. Crew management is also interesting. I liked the fact that you will lose people, but that doesn't prevent you from continuing. However, interface is catastrophic... Almost everything has to be done by mouse. And the mouse sensitivity is quite low, and can not be adjusted... I'm happy the game isn't longer than ~10h, my wrist starts hurting (and I usually play only 2h in one go...). And there could be more tooltips. Rules journal is very helpful, but in combat, it's a pain not to have a detailed tooltip over conditions or skills, so you remember what does what. Still, I'll be looking forward to Captain Flint's next adventure!
Wait for sales !
It's a good tactical rpg about pirates but overpriced for what it is worth. LOVED the drawings that replace standard cinematics. HATED the AI generated images that are used to illustrate skills.
First, the game in very short you can go trough it for 2 hours, 10-15 battles the whole game. Second, the story is dumb and shallow and you have no choices, other than to follow the story from the beginning to the end, no side quests, nothing else. Third, game mechanics, difficult and confusing, literally the game ends before you understand it, do not let me start with the weapons, items and skill complete nightmare. Finally, the game had several annoying bugs and crashes. I bought it for 2 bugs and i still regret it.
This game had so much potential! Beautiful graphic novel style art and a great setting in an atmospheric pirate world. * But the controls are terrible. I recommend playing with controller in exploration and with mouse/keyboard during fights. Then it is kind of okay. * It has barely any tutorial. It took me a while till i figured out what everything is. This becomes even worse because English and German translation both have errors, which confuse even more. * Translation has a lot of mistakes: mechanics are not strictly named the same (sometimes it's called craft, sometimes profession), sometimes it feels like the translator had no idea what the context of the scene is, and sometimes technical formatting code is visible. Also sometimes German text is just Portuguese or something. * Voice acting in game would have elevated the experience by a lot. It doesnt even have barks in combat. Only some voice acting in cutscenes. It feels like this game was rushed, didnt have enough budget (for VA) and didnt have proper QA. It is really bad. I would have wished so much for this to be a good game. It can still be really enjoyable, but it makes you work for it. I cannot recommend this.
