In the genre of difficult or tedious real life job turned video game- Fishing NA is a solid entry for time waster title. Similar to games like Farm Sim, most of the tedium in this game comes from travel between activities more than the activities themselves. Missions like cargo delivery disable fast travel so you may well spend an hour or more in real life crossing the map at 12 knots. Also like Farm Sim games, you will spend time getting your equipment to a location, then let an AI worker do most of the actual work. You can at times feel more like a boat delivery man than a boat captain. Most of the fishing is reduced to a few mouse clicks with the bulk of your time in the set up and travel phase. There are different mini-game type mechanics for each type of fishing but they all take very little skill to accomplish. Despite the massive time sink and array of fish and boats in the game, Fishing NA is easy enough to jump into very quickly Most ships can have crew members assigned to various tasks. These not only save time but often out-perform the human player. For example after only a couple levels my crew member that does hand-gutting of fish vastly out performs my own skill at the task. Crews add a level of RPG-lite element to Fishing NA as they gain experience and can be trained at ports, moved from vessel to vessel, or fired and replaced. There are a couple solo-only boats in the game as well for small scale (or tutorial) efforts. Given the repetitive and tedious nature of some tasks such as lobster sorting, hiring crew keeps the game from being a complete click-fest to play. Ships come in many sizes and shape, with most being able to do more than one type of fishing after a refit at port. Each boat can be upgraded to improve performance or even an increase in your allowable fishing limits. As these are commercial fishing vessels, they are all quite slow even if they resemble a speed boat. Fast travel is a godsend but does increase fuel usage over slow-boating in real time. Fishing NA is a very pretty game. Sunsets are gorgeous and other boats you see on the water shine with reflected sunshine. Lighting effects look good but you'll work at night quite often which does offer far less spectacular views to enjoy. Sound is fine but quite limited most of the time. In the world of 'job sim' games, Fishing NA is less realistic but more accessible than other titles. There is a feeling of progression early in the game, although once you are able to buy and crew the largest ships all you will be doing is more of the things you already did a million times with smaller ships. The fishing mechanics don't change, only the number of lines/pots/nets you are able to use at once. This too can offer a challenge to the player. Some ships are able to out-fish their cargo capacity, meaning that even if you can run 10 or more lines, you may not be able to haul the bounty in one trip. Since the round trip back to port to empty you hold may take several hours- you must consider the timing of when you drop lines and pots. Fishing NA is a good entry in the job sim genre although it doesn't provide insight into the actual real life job, it's a decently fun imitation for sitting at a computer desk for hours.
